Experiments In The Decorative Process Of Salt-Glazing, James A. Thornsbury Aug 1970

Experiments In The Decorative Process Of Salt-Glazing, James A. Thornsbury

All Master's Theses

It is the purpose of this study to explore the process of salt-glazing and to develop a representative range of colored salt glazes by the application of soluble and insoluble metallic salts to the surface of the clay bodies. Varying percentages of clay forming constituents and metallic salts were tested to determine their effects on the range and characteristics of the colors obtained, and the ability of the clay body to take a salt-glaze. Firing techniques, kiln atmosphere control, and salting procedures were studied to determine their effects on the color of both clay and glaze, the ability of the …

A Study Of The Bottle Configuration, William A. Tyner Jan 1970

A Study Of The Bottle Configuration, William A. Tyner

All Master's Theses

It is the candidate's intention to explore the elements inherent with the bottle configuration. Singled out as most important are Form, Balance and Tension, while the bottle or closed form has been chosen due to the vastness of form possibility and over-all technical difficulty of working in that format. The study is predominantly creative, and in that vein, the candidate seeks the experience that will be gained from defining his sincere attitudes and convictions embodied in the results of the study, original ceramic art forms.

Visual And Expressive Form Qualities Attainable In Thrown Pottery Vessels By Use Of Various Lips And Feet, Kirby William Benson May 1967

Visual And Expressive Form Qualities Attainable In Thrown Pottery Vessels By Use Of Various Lips And Feet, Kirby William Benson

All Master's Theses

It was the purpose of this study to discover the number of various form qualities that it is possible to achieve within pottery vessels that are closely related by similar feet, bodies, and lips. The variety of form qualities sought for were of a visual nature; the entire pot seeming to appear more or less vertical or more or less horizontal than others with the same type of body but with different shapes of lips and feet selected to be used.

Evolving Creative Thrown Pottery Vessels From Basic Forms, Kenneth Raymond Moser Dec 1965

Evolving Creative Thrown Pottery Vessels From Basic Forms, Kenneth Raymond Moser

All Master's Theses

By progressively varying the design elements of the silhouette, many different pottery forms can be evolved. By employing this approach, the potter can completely explore his theories of design and find the better proportion and placement of all elements of his forms.

The Role Of Certain Selected Instructional Aids In Teaching Industrial Arts, Philip Gordon Bergstrom Aug 1963

The Role Of Certain Selected Instructional Aids In Teaching Industrial Arts, Philip Gordon Bergstrom

Graduate Student Research Papers

Much has been done since World War II to propagate and develop instructional aids for general education. Many of these have been specifically designed to fit the industrial arts areas. However, some industrial arts instructors seem unaware of the possibilities inherent in instructional aids. This paper, then, is an attempt to (1) describe and evaluate several specific teaching aids and (2) use these examples to show some possible roles of teaching aids in industrial arts.

Creative Glazing Through The Trial And Error Method, Ted Wiprud Aug 1962

Creative Glazing Through The Trial And Error Method, Ted Wiprud

Graduate Student Research Papers

This research paper will deal with trial and error glazing. The main purpose will be to show that trial and error glazing goes beyond practical consideration and lends itself to the philosophical aspects of creativity.

The Development Of A Cone Four Ware From Materials Easily Accessible To Central Washington College Of Education, Lura Elizabeth Bellamy Jun 1956

The Development Of A Cone Four Ware From Materials Easily Accessible To Central Washington College Of Education, Lura Elizabeth Bellamy

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to describe, explain and conclude a series of experiments in search of the development of a clay body that would have the characteristics of: (1) vitrifying at Cone 4, yet be refractory enough to withstand the heat; and (2) being plastic so that is works well on the wheel. Additional study involved the experimentation of glazes on the clay bodies with the hopes of finding some to fit. The factors determining the use of clays that are economical and easily accessible to Central Washington College of Education were also considered.

How To Use Local Clays In School Ceramics, Warren R. Scott Aug 1952

How To Use Local Clays In School Ceramics, Warren R. Scott

All Master's Theses

The object of this paper is to assist the ceramics teacher in experimentation with local clays. The use of local clays has a definite esthetic value, especially when the teacher makes use of all of the instructional aids associated with the geology and industrial–ceramic aspects which may be incorporated with field trips and the experimentation and processing necessary to make the clay useful.

An Experiment With Mineral Pigments In A Prepared Frit, Cecelia Long Aug 1951

An Experiment With Mineral Pigments In A Prepared Frit, Cecelia Long

All Master's Theses

It was the purpose of the writer to conduct a series of line blend experiments with mineral pigments in a prepared fritted glaze with the intention of finding: (1) the effects of the different mineral pigments, and (2) the desired quantities of these coloring agents in a given glaze. It was expected that the experiment would result in a set of sample tiles which could then be used in teaching.
