Bioethics, Law, And The Opioid Crisis: Revisiting The Concept Of Incarceration Versus Rehabilitation, Zachary J. Krauss Dec 2019

Bioethics, Law, And The Opioid Crisis: Revisiting The Concept Of Incarceration Versus Rehabilitation, Zachary J. Krauss

Bioethics in Faith and Practice

The opioid crisis has taken America by storm and is causing more deaths each year than ever originally anticipated. Our current approach to addressing the opioid crisis involves two separate approaches, one from the medical/rehabilitation side of the problem, and one from the criminal justice side. This article serves as a revisiting of the discussion of the intricate balance that must be reached between rehabilitation and incarceration in order to adequately address the problem.

The Ethics Of Ivf, Breanna Beers Dec 2019

The Ethics Of Ivf, Breanna Beers

Bioethics in Faith and Practice

In vitro fertilization (IVF) has promised hope to many couples struggling with the pain of infertility. However, as with any new medical technology, the ethical implications of this procedure must be examined, particularly in light of recent events such as the birth of the first genetically modified human beings, made possible by IVF. It is crucial to examine oppositions to IVF based on principle, as well as address concerns related to adjacent issues such as the discard of unused embryos; the selection, payment, privacy, and parental rights of donors and surrogates; the importance of genetic parenthood; new combinations of gametes; …

Is Bioethics Relevant?, Heather G. Kuruvilla

Bioethics in Faith and Practice

We live in a broken, unjust, and often dangerous world. Technology promises hope; hope for new cures, broader access to information, and a better quality of life for humankind. Technologies such as gene editing and artificial intelligence continue to progress at a pace we have never seen before, running far ahead of the ethical discussions surrounding their stewardship. In a technology-driven culture like ours, one might be tempted to ask whether the ethical discussion is still relevant.

A Religious Interpretation Of The American Civil War As Evidenced By Biblical Language In Songs And Hymns, Alyson J. Punzi Nov 2019

A Religious Interpretation Of The American Civil War As Evidenced By Biblical Language In Songs And Hymns, Alyson J. Punzi

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

Both Union and Confederate soldiers claimed the same moral confidence about being on the right side of the American Civil War. Significant studies have evaluated the religiosity of the Civil War, but the religious content of songs and hymns, namely their use of biblical language has not been studied for the insight into a religious interpretation of the war they provide. Because the moral claims appear in songs and hymns and utilize biblical language to interpret the conflict, their role in the war, and the expected outcome, this research is important to provide a full understanding of religion’s role in …

"Liberty Further Extended”: The Federalist Identity Of Lemuel Haynes, America's First Biracial Minister, David F. Guidone

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

An introduction to the life and work of Lemuel Haynes (1753-1833), a neglected figure in American History as the first biracial pastor to lead an all-white Congregation in North America. The topic of this paper addresses an understudied and essential aspect of early America, political discourse from minority voices in the colonies. I hope to demonstrate in this paper how a particular early American minority worked as a change-agent despite the presence and practice of racism and slavery. Born in West Hartford, Connecticut and raised in Granville, Massachusetts, Haynes used the Bible, his voice, his agile mind, and a relentless …

'It Wasn't Supposed To Be Easy': What The Founders Originally Intended For The Senate's 'Advice And Consent' Role For Supreme Court Confirmation Processes, Michael W. Wilt Nov 2019

'It Wasn't Supposed To Be Easy': What The Founders Originally Intended For The Senate's 'Advice And Consent' Role For Supreme Court Confirmation Processes, Michael W. Wilt

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

The Founders exerted significant energy and passion in formulating the Appointments Clause, which greatly impacts the role of the Senate and the President in appointing Supreme Court Justices. The Founders, through their understanding of human nature, devised the power to be both a check by the U.S. Senate on the President's nomination, and a concurrent power through joint appointment authority. The Founders initially adopted the Senate election mode via state legislatures as a means of insulation from majoritarian passions of the people too. This paper seeks to understand the Founders envisioning for the Senate's 'Advice and Consent' role as it …

Music Next To Theology: The Impact And Influence Of Martin Luther's Reformation On Johann Sebastian Bach, James H. Ryan

Musical Offerings

The artistic figure and music of Johann Sebastian Bach looms large in the history of Western arts and culture. His influences were many, but one strong influence in his life's work was that of the Protestant Reformation and the theology of the Lutheran church. Through this research, it is evident that Bach strongly held to the doctrines and theology of the Lutheran church and that his employment in the Lutheran church was not merely a vocation for him, but an outward expression of his inward religious and theological conviction. This position is evidenced by the writings and teachings of Martin …

Understanding The Cultural And Nationalistic Impacts Of The Moguchaya Kuchka, Austin M. Doub

Musical Offerings

This paper explores Russian culture beginning in the mid nineteenth-century as the leading group of composers and musicians known as the moguchaya kuchka, or The Mighty Five, sought to influence Russian culture and develop a "pure" school of Russian music amid rampant westernization. Comprised of César Cui, Alexander Borodin, Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, this group of inspired musicians opposed westernization and supported Official Nationalism by the incorporation of folklore, local village traditions, and promotion of their Tsar as a supreme political leader. In particular, the works of Balakirev, Cui, and Mussorgsky established cultural pride and contributed …
