Increasing Interactivity In Archaeology Courses At The Undergraduate And Graduate Levels, Guy Hepp Dec 2019

Increasing Interactivity In Archaeology Courses At The Undergraduate And Graduate Levels, Guy Hepp

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

This project included revisions to ANTH 140: World Civilizations I, the Rise of Civilization and ANTH 616: History and Theory of Archaeology. For ANTH 140, the required readings, lecture content, group activities, and assessment strategies were all significantly changed or completely replaced. For ANTH 616, subtle changes were made to reading response, group discussion, and online group discussion strategies. Both course revisions resulted in improved classroom atmospheres. This was especially the case for ANTH 140, where average and median grades improved and standard deviations in grades decreased. Improvements to ANTH 616, a small seminar course, were too affected by outliers …

Employee Compliance To Information Security In Retail Stores, Bertrand Muhire, Ramakrishna Ayyagari

Communications of the IIMA

Retail industry has suffered some of the biggest data breaches in recent times. Organizations are deploying technological tools to limit data breaches. However, purely technological solution is not going to be sufficient because human-factor is often considered to be the weakest link in Information Security. In this paper, the authors investigate the behavioral aspect of information security in a retail setting. Specifically, the factors that influence compliance behaviors to information security policies (ISP) in retail stores are identified. Attitude, awareness, and sanctions are proposed as key variables that influence compliance intentions to ISP. The authors test the proposed model using …

All MSW students at the California university were invited to participate in the study. The surveys were administered via Qualtrics online survey software to the 68 part-time and o-time MSW students who agreed to …

The Importance Of Earnings In Career Technical Education Field Of Study Choice, Karen S. Childers Dec 2019

The Importance Of Earnings In Career Technical Education Field Of Study Choice, Karen S. Childers

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed methods research study was to examine factors influencing community college Career Technical Education (CTE) students in their field of study choice. The problem was twofold: (1) Community college CTE performance metrics include earnings goals, but there is little research to inform the performance metric (Harrington, Mbomeda, & Casillas, 2018; Roberts, Leufgen, & Booth, 2018); and (2) CTE students, who are disproportionately economically disadvantaged, pursue fields of study that do not lead to a living wage (Bahr, 2010; Booth & Bahr, 2012; Zhang & Oymak, 2018).

For this within-stage mixed model design (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004), …

Writing Interventions For Students With Specific Learning Disabilities, Phillip Rose

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Only 27% of U.S. eighth graders are at or above grade level proficiency in writing (National Center for Education Statistics, 2012). Students with specific learning disabilities frequently exhibit skill deficits in planning, organizing, and writing conventions, and show inadequate awareness to write strategically (Troia, 2006). The purpose of this study is to examine evidence-based writing interventions aimed at enhancing the writing skills of students with specific learning disabilities and then to indicate which interventions were proven to be effective. The results of a variety of studies of writing intervention strategies have been reviewed. Specific instructional strategies that were successful in …

The Dark Side Of Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors: Is Getting Help With Family Needs Detrimental To Women's Careers?, Gino Howard

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This study focuses on the negative impact that family supportive supervisor behaviors may have on career advancement for women in addition to the positive impact of family supportive supervisor behaviors in reducing work-family conflict. Data was collected using an online questionnaire through a university research management system including student participants and snowball sampling through email and social media platforms for a combined sample of 154 participants. Our results showed that increases in family supportive supervisor behaviors is associated with decreases in work-family conflict in agreement with findings in the literature. More specifically, the study showed that family supportive supervisor behaviors …

Toward Critical Counseling: A Content Analysis Of Critical Race Theory And Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Community College Counselor Education, Lyman A. Insley Dec 2019

Toward Critical Counseling: A Content Analysis Of Critical Race Theory And Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Community College Counselor Education, Lyman A. Insley

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Background: Prior to the early 1990s, most counselor preparation programs did not have multicultural competencies. Therefore, a call was made for the use of multicultural competencies in counselor preparation programs. Yet, the popularization of multicultural competencies of this time in education had a Eurocentric bent, a kind of colorblindness

More recently, scholars confirmed that these Eurocentric multicultural competencies had become the primary template from which counselor preparation programs taught culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy. Therefore, a call was made for the use of critical race theory (CRT) in counselor preparation programs to challenge and change Eurocentric cultural competence.

Purpose: This …

The Origins Of Classic Hollywood’S Male, Federico Guevara Nov 2019

The Origins Of Classic Hollywood’S Male, Federico Guevara

History in the Making

Male dominance of Hollywood productions solidified inadvertently in the 1930s through the implementation of Catholic morality on screen, which precipitously narrowed the scope of experiences and desires of women depicted in entertainment media for the ensuing decades. Tracing back the behind-the-scenes origins and development of Hollywood’s persistent male gaze, it becomes clear that women in the entertainment industry had some real agency and power in the 1920s, prior to the Catholic Legion of Decency’s interference in movie making. These censorship rules, which became known as the Hays Code and were argued to be good for the whole of society, consequently …

Racial Ambiguity In The Borderlands: New Mexico’S African American Soldiers, 1860-1922, Jacqulyne Anton Nov 2019

Racial Ambiguity In The Borderlands: New Mexico’S African American Soldiers, 1860-1922, Jacqulyne Anton

History in the Making

In the nineteenth century United States, African Americans faced severe forms of racism that manifested through institutions of slavery, segregation and discrimination. Antebellum and Civil War historians focus on African American resistance to white supremacy and oppression through various forms of resistance, some of which include violent revolts and the search for freedom in the North. With that being said, however, many historians seem to ignore the role of the US-Mexico borderlands in African Americans’ contestation of the racist laws of the American North and South. This article examines African Americans' experiences in the US-Mexico borderlands of New Mexico during …

Here And There, Now And Then: Portrayals Of The Third Crusade In Film And How Their Inaccuracies Encompass Contemporary Movements, Steven Anthony Oct 2019

Here And There, Now And Then: Portrayals Of The Third Crusade In Film And How Their Inaccuracies Encompass Contemporary Movements, Steven Anthony

History in the Making

This paper examines the relationship between films dealing with historical events and how they encompass events of the time the film was made. This work uses two film representations of the Third Crusade, from 1187 – 1192; the first is Youssef Chahines’ 1963 film Al Nasser Salah Ad-Din and the second is Ridley Scotts’ 2005 film, Kingdom of Heaven. Between the films’ narrations of events and the actual history, parallels are created between past and present, dealing with ideas such as tolerance and peaceful dialogue, as well as movements such as national, ethnic, or religious unity and inclusiveness.

Roses And Votes: Immigrant Jewish Women And The New York Woman Suffrage Movement, 1894-1917, Katelyn Johnson

History in the Making

The purpose of this article is to explore the role that Jewish immigrant women had in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. It is focused in New York due to the unique concurrency of a large, concentrated Jewish immigrant community and a heavily active location for the Women’s Suffrage Movement. The project draws a strong link to Jewish workingwomen’s influence and participation in the Labor Rights Movement, also during the early nineteenth century. The research draws upon several primary sources from the Lower East Side Jewish community, as well as the research of historians Susan A. Glenn and Melissa R. Klapper. The …

Kurdish Women Guerrilla Fighters, Meagan Muschara Oct 2019

Kurdish Women Guerrilla Fighters, Meagan Muschara

History in the Making

This article focuses on the female fighters of the PKK. The media over the past four years have continued to report about the female inclusion into this male dominated resistance group, the PKK in Turkey. The addition of women to the fight spread to various Kurdish resistance groups throughout the Middle East. The interviews brought about a plethora of questions about egalitarian rights for women entering the PKK. The questions that arose are: How equal are women’s rights? Are there any stipulations? Why are females willing to fight for the cause and what do these women gain by fighting alongside …

Palestinian-Jews And Israel’S Dual Identity Crisis, Rafael Perez Oct 2019

Palestinian-Jews And Israel’S Dual Identity Crisis, Rafael Perez

History in the Making

This paper looks to explore the complex combination of those who are both Arab in culture and Jewish by faith. This complex dual identity is generally known as Mizrahim or Arab Jews. Within the general Arab-Israeli dispute, this identity complicates the conflict by challenging the normative understanding of nationalism. Moreover, this paper examines the history of the Mizrahim through the Palestinian-Jewish experience in pre-establishment Israel and further examines the social changes that affected Mizrahim within the Israeli State after the 1948 War. Various primary source documents, essays, personal accounts, peer-reviewed journals, and surveys are used to understand the identity and …

Daughters Of The May Fourth, Orphans Of Revolution, Hector Lopez Oct 2019

Daughters Of The May Fourth, Orphans Of Revolution, Hector Lopez

History in the Making

Confucianism, an ideology that dominated Chinese society for millennia, became a stain in Chinese culture. The youth in China at the turn of the twentieth century were determined to rid their society from Confucian influence. There was only one problem; they did so by taking small steps in ridding Confucianism one piece at a time. The biggest issue, filial piety, became the toughest challenge China faced during the revolutionary period. Authors like Lu Xun and Chen Duxiu used literature to protest against filial piety, influencing many others to do the same. Women like Xiao Hong and Ding Ling also exposed …

Camp Followers, Nurses, Soldiers, And Spies: Women And The Modern Memory Of The Revolutionary War, Heather K. Garrett Oct 2019

Camp Followers, Nurses, Soldiers, And Spies: Women And The Modern Memory Of The Revolutionary War, Heather K. Garrett

History in the Making

When asked of their memory of the American Revolution, most would reference George Washington or Paul Revere, but probably not Molly Pitcher, Lydia Darragh, or Deborah Sampson. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to demonstrate not only the lack of inclusivity of women in the memory of the Revolutionary War, but also why the women that did achieve recognition surpassed the rest. Women contributed to the war effort in multiple ways, including serving as cooks, laundresses, nurses, spies, and even as soldiers on the battlefields. Unfortunately, due to the large number of female participants, it would be impossible to …
