Barriers To Full Participation In The Individualized Education Program For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Parents, Arpi Tamzarian, Holly M. Menzies, Leila Ricci
Barriers To Full Participation In The Individualized Education Program For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Parents, Arpi Tamzarian, Holly M. Menzies, Leila Ricci
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) mandates that schools facilitate parent participation in planning the Individual Education Program (IEP). However, culturally and linguistically diverse parents are less likely to feel fully included in the IEP process. In this article we examine three sources of cross-cultural communication difficulties: verbal and non-verbal communication styles, bureaucratic procedures, and cultural assumptions about disability and intervention. We conclude by suggesting schools use an empathetic approach to improve communication in the IEP process.

A Literature Review Of Implementing Response To Intervention For English Language Learners, Eunjeong Choi, Kevin Oh, Sung Moon Yoon, Sunggye Hong
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
Response to intervention (RTI) has actively been used for identifying reading difficulties and providing supplemental instructions for students with disabilities. Recent developments of RTI show that the method expands its applicability to other areas and populations. In particular, it is difficult to distinguish learning disability (LD) from English as a second language acquisition. RTI could successfully be implemented for English language learners (ELLs). A systematic literature review has been conducted to delineate various components, strategies, and implications of RTI for ELL students. Twenty six articles that meet the criteria are analyzed for themes and important findings. The result of the …
The Effects Of Fluency Instruction On The Oral Reading Fluency And Comprehension Of First-Grade African American Males With Reading Risk, Lenwood Gibson Jr., Gwendolyn Cartledge
The Effects Of Fluency Instruction On The Oral Reading Fluency And Comprehension Of First-Grade African American Males With Reading Risk, Lenwood Gibson Jr., Gwendolyn Cartledge
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
This study evaluated the effects of a fluency building activity on the oral reading fluency (ORF) and comprehension of four first grade students identified as at risk for reading failure. The participants in this study were selected because they were members of a group at the highest risk for reading problems, specifically African American boys attending an urban school district. The results of this study demonstrated that the intervention was successful in increasing the ORF of all four participants but results were much more robust for two of the four students. Although ORF increased for all of the participants, gains …

Effects Of Gifted Peers Tutoring Struggling Reading Peers, Christopher D. Yawn
Effects Of Gifted Peers Tutoring Struggling Reading Peers, Christopher D. Yawn
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
This study examined the effects of a peer tutoring program that used a Direct Instruction (DI) reading curriculum. Students identified as gifted and talented delivered instruction, using the DI reading program, to their struggling reading peers. The students used a cross-skill peer tutoring instructional format. The results indicated that all of the students who received tutoring increased their reading rates and that most made gains pretest to posttest on a standardized measure. Additionally, the tutors demonstrated that they were able to implement the DI program with fidelity and proved to be effective instructors.
The Captivity Narrative In Octavia E. Butler's Adulthood Rites, Stacy Magedanz
The Captivity Narrative In Octavia E. Butler's Adulthood Rites, Stacy Magedanz
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
Octavia E. Butler’s novel Adulthood Rites incorporates an enduring genre of American literature, the captivity narrative. By drawing on the familiar tale of a civilized protagonist held captive by brutal savages, Butler echoes traditional themes of spiritual growth and identity formation. Manipulating the trope of “going native” allows her to hold several opposed values in tension: oppression and protection, appreciation for a native culture and betrayal of it, difference and identification. A hybrid creature, Akin must bridge a variety of opposites as he matures, a theme Butler reinforces by making a hybrid structure of the captivity narrative itself.

Ethnic And Immigration Status Differences On Child Indicators Of Health For European Americans And Latinos, Christina Granillo, David V. Chavez, Donna M. Garcia, Kelly Campbell
Ethnic And Immigration Status Differences On Child Indicators Of Health For European Americans And Latinos, Christina Granillo, David V. Chavez, Donna M. Garcia, Kelly Campbell
Psychology Faculty Publications
This study examined the effects of ethnicity and immigration status on subjective and objective health (Body Mass Index; BMI) for Latino and European American children. Social identity and comparison theories were used to frame the investigation. Southern California parents were randomly selected to complete a telephone interview about their children’s health yielding a sample of 165 European American and 152 Latino participants. Compared to European Americans, Latinos evidenced poorer subjective and objective health. Latino children who had a caregiver who was a citizen had better subjective health than Latino children whose caregiver was not a citizen. BMI was correlated with …
Applying Feminist Perspectives To Teaching Diversity: The Experiences Of Two Female Professors, Roudi Nazarinia Roy, Kelly Campbell
Applying Feminist Perspectives To Teaching Diversity: The Experiences Of Two Female Professors, Roudi Nazarinia Roy, Kelly Campbell
Psychology Faculty Publications
In this paper, we narratively describe our perspectives and experiences as two female professors teaching courses on family diversity. We begin by outlining our subjectivities, including an explicit identification of the ways in which our identities are privileged versus not privileged. We then use a feminist lens to discuss the teaching goals and strategies used in our courses. The teaching goals discussed in this paper include: self-awareness of the instructor, reducing hierarchy in the classroom, empowering students, and caring for the individual student. Our strategies include: promoting dialogue, encouraging respect, and creating a class environment in which individuals feel safe …

Exploring The Latino Paradox: How Economic And Citizenship Status Impact Health, Kelly Campbell, Donna M. Garcia, Christina V. Granillo, David V. Chavez
Psychology Faculty Publications
We examined the contributions of economic status (ES) and citizenship status to health differences between European Americans, Latino Americans, and non-citizen Latinos. The investigation was framed using social identity and comparison theories. Southern California residents (N = 2164) were randomly selected to complete a telephone interview. Increases in ES predicted health improvements for European Americans across ES levels. For Latino citizens and non-citizens, ES improvements had no effect on objective health. For subjective health, the Latino paradox existed at the lowest ES level for Latino Americans, and did not exist for non-citizens. For objective health, the paradox existed in both …
Newlywed Women’S Marital Expectations: Lifelong Monogamy?, Kelly Campbell, David W. Wright, Carlos G. Flores
Newlywed Women’S Marital Expectations: Lifelong Monogamy?, Kelly Campbell, David W. Wright, Carlos G. Flores
Psychology Faculty Publications
Over time, perceptions of marriage in the United States have shifted from a social obligation to a decision based on personal fulfillment. This shift has been most pronounced for women who no longer rely upon marriage for financial security. Marriages based on personal fulfillment are more fragile so when love declines and constraints do not exist, infidelity and divorce are considered viable options. This study investigated newlywed women’s marital expectations along with their experiences of infidelity and expectations of divorce. Newlywed women (N=197) married 2 years or less completed an online survey. As expected, these women primarily conceptualized marriage in …
