The practice of mindfulness has been around for thousands of years, however; the practice has just become more common in the Western world, and especially in the classroom. The purpose of this paper is to discover how implementing mindfulness promotes mental health in elementary school students. This senior capstone research project examines how mindfulness could be integrated into the school classrooms through the use of literature review, interviews with elementary school teachers in the Monterey Bay area and surveys with several students along with one subject participant at the California State University Monterey Bay. As a result, the findings reveal that most students and teachers thought that mindfulness proved to be successful and useful when integrating it with the younger population to deal with their emotions.

The topic of this research project is Mindfulness for Middle School Students. The participants for the Capstone project included 53 seventh-grade students in a public middle school located in the Bay Area of California. The Capstone Project was done in a four-week process, where the researcher implemented her lesson plan to two class periods every Friday. She made lectures and Kahoot quizzes to keep track of all the students comprehension on the content. This was her way of assessing the students throughout her research for the Capstone Project. The research in this paper analyzed the effectiveness of implementing mindfulness in a public classroom. The participants for the Capstone Project included 28 fourth-grade students in a public elementary school located on California’s Central Coast. The researcher implemented lesson plans that included body awareness and breathing techniques that are effective scaffoldings to implementing mindfulness in the classroom. The results produced, showed half of the students felt the mindfulness lessons helped the students understand how to use mindfulness, while the other half of the classroom did not. Toxic stress is common in modern adolescence and can be detrimental to one's long-term physical and psychological well-being. Adolescents spend vast quantities of time at school and thus school is an ideal venue to introduce stress reducing mechanisms. Elementary school students are experiencing heightened levels of test anxiety which is blocking their access to learning. Practices such as art therapy, meditation, and mindfulness are rising in popularity as means for controlling and reducing anxiety. Recent studies have found success in using these practices with students to reduce test anxiety (Putwain et al., 2014; Cho, Ryu, Noh, & Lee, 2016).
