The Veterans Transition Center of Monterey County assists homeless veterans and their families in reducing barriers with housing, income, and healthcare. Many clients create issues consciously or unconsciously for themselves and staff due to mental illness related to trauma from childhood or military. Due to students having lack of education in high school, this created many barriers between students and academics, as well as students receiving the proper resources. This paper attempts to increase mental health awareness among student-athletes in college. Two players from the men’s basketball team at California State University, Monterey Bay participated in an interactive presentation regarding the impact that stress, anxiety, and injuries have on mental health and how to cope. The impacts are performance-related as well as impacting social life, academics, and relationships. The participants filled out forms and took a short quiz to see if they understood the impacts and were able to identify coping strategies.
