Improving Ductility Of Slender Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls With Frp Sheets And Splay Anchors, Luke M. Ostrom Dec 2018

Improving Ductility Of Slender Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls With Frp Sheets And Splay Anchors, Luke M. Ostrom

Architectural Engineering

The Sylmar earthquake of 1971 caused significant damage to slender, non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall buildings in California. A later survey by the Concrete Coalition in 2011, under the guidance of EERI members, indicated that there are over 3000 vulnerable concrete buildings in California [8]. This led to City of Los Angeles (LA) Ordinance 193893 enacted in 2015, which requires mandatory upgrades to these concrete buildings by 2035. Current practice to meet the requirements of this ordinance, with respect to RC wall buildings, involves adding new shear walls to the building plan or increasing the cross-sectional area of existing …

Clt Shearwall Dovetail Connection, Alexander Eduardo Esser, August Messano Dec 2018

Clt Shearwall Dovetail Connection, Alexander Eduardo Esser, August Messano

Architectural Engineering

As cross-laminated timber has become an increasingly popular construction material, its use as a shear wall element has also demanded attention. Primary obstructions to the use of CLT shear walls have been the lack of an economic connection type that does not compromise the structural integrity and has the robustness that CLT shear wall panels deserve. Dovetail connections provide a great option for the connection of CLT shear walls. With more experimentation, the optimal dovetail geometry can be further developed. The small-scale testing done in conjunction with this report proved that very deep pins and tails will result in bearing …

Invariant Subspaces Of Compact Operators And Related Topics, Weston Mckay Grewe

Mathematics

The invariant subspace problem asks if every bounded linear operator on a Banach space has a nontrivial closed invariant subspace. Per Enflo has shown this is false in general, however it is known that every compact operator has an invariant subspace. The purpose of this project is to explore introductory results in functional analysis. Specifically we are interested in understanding compact operators and the proof that all compact operators on a Hilbert space have an invariant subspace. In the process of doing this we build up many examples and theorems relating to operators on a Hilbert or Banach space. Continuing …
