"We Say No More:" The Role Of Bodily Trauma And Hybrid Spaces In The March For Our Lives Movement, Haeley Van Der Werf

Theses and Dissertations

The youth-led March For Our Lives is founded on the idea of young people forced into advocacy by unthinkable tragedy. The movement exists in a digital age where the lines between the physical and digital have become increasingly blurred. By using the work of scholars such as Manuel Castells and Henry Jenkins as a foundation to analyze this movement, we can gain a deeper understanding of why MFOL has succeeded and failed in the ways that it has. These noted digital activism academics will be used to explore how collective anger is expressed and created through the use of personal …

Would you like occasionally to express an opinion about singing to friends who understand your enthusiasm for Björling and other great historical singers, or even current opera singers? Well, some of us have fun talking about slightly abstruse topics like Jussi’s four recordings of Beethoven’s song “Adelaide,” for instance comparing the 1949 version from Jussi’s Hollywood Bowl concert (newly available!) with the other three, and even with versions by other singers.

Jussi In The News, Dan Shea

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

A good idea that was mentioned frequently during last June's Washington conference on the vocal legacy of Jussi Bjorling was: "Let's keep track of all the interesting articles that mention Jussi and publish them in our Journal for all our members." This we hope to do, but our work will be better- and more fun- if YOU help us. Please let us know about "Jussi items" you come across. We'll keep track of your information and summarize it for our readers.

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

•Thanks to Email from Toby and Karl Hekler, Yoel Arbeitman, and others, we heard of Fr. Owen Lee's eloquent tribute to Jussi on an intermission feature during the February 5th Metropolitan broadcast of La Traviata. Luckily, we had a tape going during that broadcast, anticipating some sort of "happening" on Jussi's birthday. Thus we can provide for you the precise transcript of Fr. Lee's statement. He pointed out that he had been asked to discuss his favorite singers for that broadcast, but that some of his personal choices, like Zinka Milanov, had already been chosen by others. He continues with …

+ Well, for the committed Jussi-phile (and that certainly includes all members of this Society, by definition}, the biggest media Jussi-fest of the year has to be the publication, in April, of Number 2, vol. 16 of The Opera Quarterly: over 30 pages of fascinating Remembrances of Jussi, by London Green, William Ashbrook, M. Owen Lee, and Robert Baxter; followed by Andrew Farkas' description of his search to track down the answer to one of the mysteries of Jussi's performance-history, in the 14-page article ''Bjorling and Ballo, 'The Most Unkindest Cut of All'". You'll want to follow all the twists …

Лол—Comparing Expressions Of Humor Used In Memes By Russian And English Speakers, Teya Jensen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis explores trends in the types of humor used by Russian and English speakers in the creation and perpetuation of internet memes. The purpose of this project is to better understand the impact of the globalizing effects of the internet on social identity. Most current scholarship addressing the effects of memes on social communication and research into the specific trends of humor on the internet, focuses on the meme culture of English-speakers. Some researchers have focused on analyzing meme use in other countries, but they have not compared American and Russian humor.

This project demonstrates how patterns of pastiche, …

Russian Language Journal

This paper is intended to provide a pedagogical framework for specific choices that instructors can make about tasks and their relationship to course goals for teaching a Russian media course to non-native speakers of Russian. The course materials involve work with literary texts, television, and the Internet. This paper first considers the New London Group’s (1996) theory of multiliteracies to build a fitting pedagogical framework for working with different types of media and communication channels in a Russian media course outside of Russia. Connecting To Disconnect: Internet Access And Loss Of Trust In Pre-Arab Spring Egypt, Rolf David Dixon Jr.

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Research has shown that seeking out and deliberating with like-minded individuals can contribute to the fragmentation and polarization of societies. The study posits that the internet can contributes to just such like-minded reinforcement, via a phenomenon called the echo chamber effect. An analysis of the World Values Survey of Egypt in 2001 supports the claim that the internet can contribute to fragmentation and polarization, as measured by a lack of trust. The analysis shows that access to the Internet, even as early as 2001, with the limited penetration it had in in Egypt at that time, still had a measurable, …

Breaking Down Barriers Of Space: Correlations And Connections Between Online Social Capital, Offline Social Capital, Community Attachment, And Community Satisfaction, David B. Braudt

Theses and Dissertations

With Internet access and use becoming nearly ubiquitous aspects of an individual’s experience of everyday life, sociologists must consider how the Internet is transforming an individual's experience of community. This study examines the connections between place-independent forms of social capital actuated online, place-dependent forms of social capital actuated face-to-face, and individuals' perceptions of community attachment and community satisfaction. Moving from a theoretical foundation to empirical evidence, I show the concepts of bonding and bridging social capital can and should be divided based upon the medium through which they are actuated. I then explore the effect of online and offline forms …

To say that the Internet has had an enormous impact on the world of education is to state the obvious, and the world of foreign language education is no exception. In other words, students have to be information literate to adapt to today’s increasingly complex multimedia environment.

Public Spheres, Democracy, And New Media: Using Blogs In The Composition Classroom, Katherine Elizabeth Cowley

Theses and Dissertations

Public spheres theories provide purpose and direction to composition instruction: the teaching of writing within this context empowers our students to participate in public discourse and make a difference in communities. New media has been celebrated for its democratic nature, and composition instructors have begun to use public spheres theories as they incorporate new media in the classroom to create a protopublic space. As such, our new media teaching practices should account for both the democratic opportunities and …
