Rahel Levin Varnahagen: Harnessing The Ability To Become, Mareena Smith Dec 2001

Rahel Levin Varnahagen: Harnessing The Ability To Become, Mareena Smith

Resources

Rahel Levin Varnhagen: Influence of a Jewess on German Romanticism. Life is not always a box of chocolates, especially if one is part of a marginalized race, religion or gender. Since all three apply to Rahel Levin Varnhagen, one can easily imply that she did not live an easy life. She was raised as a Jewess in a time when Jews were welcome in society but not yet fully integrated into it. As a woman she was limited to a particular lifestyle as well, and yet she took advantage of her surroundings to make a place for herself in the …

Manipulation Of Prenatal Hormones And Dietary Phytoestrogens During Adulthood Alter The Sexually Dimorphic Expression Of Visual Spatial Memory, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund Dec 2001

Manipulation Of Prenatal Hormones And Dietary Phytoestrogens During Adulthood Alter The Sexually Dimorphic Expression Of Visual Spatial Memory, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund

Faculty Publications

In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit higher performance levels compared to females (a difference attributed to sex steroid hormonal influences). Based upon the results from our companion investigation, this study examined the influence of prenatal sex steroid hormone manipulations on VSM in adulthood, as assessed in the radial arm maze. Additionally, the influence of dietary soy phytoestrogens (i.e., the presence of high or low estrogen-like compounds present in the animal's diet) on VSM was examined in combination with the prenatal hormonal manipulations. Results: Radial arm maze performance on a phytoestrogen-rich diet: 1) females treated …

Visual Spatial Memory Is Enhanced In Female Rats (But Inhibited In Males) By Dietary Soy Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Timothy W. West, Lilyan Y. Tian, Lihong H. Bu, Daniel L. Simmons, Kenneth Setchell, Herman Adlercreutz Dec 2001

Visual Spatial Memory Is Enhanced In Female Rats (But Inhibited In Males) By Dietary Soy Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Timothy W. West, Lilyan Y. Tian, Lihong H. Bu, Daniel L. Simmons, Kenneth Setchell, Herman Adlercreutz

Faculty Publications

In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit superior performance to females (a difference attributed to the hormonal influence of estrogen). This study examined the influence of phytoestrogens (estrogen-like plant compounds) on VSM, utilizing radial arm-maze methods to examine varying aspects of memory. Additionally, brain phytoestrogen, calbindin (CALB), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels were determined. Results: Female rats receiving lifelong exposure to a high-phytoestrogen containing diet (Phyto-600) acquired the maze faster than females fed a phytoestrogen-free diet (Phyto-free); in males the opposite diet effect was identified. In a separate experiment, at 80 days-of-age, animals fed the Phyto-600 …

Variation In The Bark Call Of The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus), Osamu Yamamoto, Barry Moore, Leonard Brand Nov 2001

Variation In The Bark Call Of The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus), Osamu Yamamoto, Barry Moore, Leonard Brand

Western North American Naturalist

Calls of the red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus; n = 122) were recorded in wild populations from 15 localities in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Washington. Computer-generated audiospectrograms of 20- or 30-second samples from a calling bout of each individual were analyzed. Eighteen bark types (distinct forms of the bark call) were identified plus a 19th category that included rarely used, longer bark calls. The frequency of use of each bark type within the sample was recorded for each squirrel. Differences in frequency of use of the various bark types were found among subspecies, within subspecies, …

Tradition Amid Social Upheaval: The Palestinian Muslim Family, Bruce A. Chadwick, Camille Fronk, Ray Huntington, Tim B. Heaton, Brian K. Barber

BYU Studies Quarterly

In 1994 and 1995, a research team from Brigham Young University conducted a survey of residents of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Motivated in part by our strong interest as Latter-day Saints in understanding and strengthening family life, we wished to study several aspects of the Palestinian family including prominence of marriage, family size, gender roles, education of women, marriage between relatives, and location of residence after marriage. By comparing our data with that of earlier surveys, we can ascertain changes occurring in the Muslim world.

Islam: An Introduction And Bibliography, James A. Toronto, Cynthia Finlayson Oct 2001

Islam: An Introduction And Bibliography, James A. Toronto, Cynthia Finlayson

BYU Studies Quarterly

Long before the events of September 11, 2001, BYU Studies began working on this special issue focusing on Islam. The authors and editors who worked on this issue have tried to capture the spirit of a religion that provides guidance to the lives of millions of people worldwide. The ever expanding influence of Islam extends to the prominent and often controversial role that Islam plays in contemporary politics. In addition, Muslim theology, scripture, art, science, and communal values have made significant contributions to world civilization. And in quiet yet significant ways, dialogue and contact between Latter-day Saints and Muslims have …

Many Voices, One Umma: Sociopolitical Debate In The Muslim Community, James A. Toronto Oct 2001

Many Voices, One Umma: Sociopolitical Debate In The Muslim Community, James A. Toronto

BYU Studies Quarterly

As a religion expands beyond its original setting, it encounters new historical, economic, social, and geopolitical forces. The resulting clash between sacred truth and secular reality created ideological tensions within a religious community that lead its followers to engage in a process of dialogue, reform, and reconciliation. This process of dialectical exchange occurs both between members of the community and between the community and outside forces. Often it gives rise to traumatic, even violent, conflict and frequently leads to schisms and the establishment of break-away religious movements. The history of religion provides abundant evidence that the ability of a nascent …

Microcredit And The Rural Poor: A Review Of The Maharashtra Rural Credit Project, Raghav Gaiha Sep 2001

Microcredit And The Rural Poor: A Review Of The Maharashtra Rural Credit Project, Raghav Gaiha

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

An attempt is made to review the Maharashtra Rural Credit Project (MRCP)--a microcredit scheme--by focusing on the process of implementation and its implications for targeting, empowerment of women, and trade-off between coverage of the poorest and sustainability of this scheme. Attention is drawn to deficiencies in the design and implementation of this scheme that limit the participation of the poorest and the benefits accruing to them. Moreover, it is argued that there is a risk of overstating the trade-off between the coverage of the poorest and sustainability of the MRCP if these deficiencies are overlooked.

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch Jul 2001

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch

BYU Studies Quarterly

During the festive weeks before Christmas feasts, everybody loves to hate Scrooge. That's how it always was in the household of my childhood. On the first Sunday afternoon of December, my father would gather the children in the family room and ceremonially produce our green hardbound edition of A Christmas Carol. He worked his way through the five staves of the Carol during that afternoon and the Sunday afternoons that followed, in order to complete the reading before Christmas Day. Although the younger children would fidget and the older children would complain, we needed the annual retelling of the …

Review: Lionel Gossman, Basel In The Age Of Burckhardt. A Study In Unseasonable Ideas, Benn Williams Jun 2001

Review: Lionel Gossman, Basel In The Age Of Burckhardt. A Study In Unseasonable Ideas, Benn Williams

Swiss American Historical Society Review

"Monotonie sans egale" or sanctuary for "unbridled thinkers"?

Being human and prone to forming first impressions, this reviewer glanced at the full title of the text under review, and saw red flags rising. First, in the spirit of full disclosure, this non-Swiss reviewer has only "visited" Basel once: an unpleasant-and unexpected-wintry layover courtesy of a French rail strike. Second, seeing "unseasonable ideas" in the same title as anyone other than Nietzsche raises one's hackles. Third, while the works of Burckhardt enjoy renewed interest among art historians and publishers, he remains largely ignored by "new" cultural and intellectual historians and humanists …

Assessing The Need For Microenterprises In Mexico To Borrow Start-Up Capital, Heikki Heino, Jose A. Pagan Apr 2001

Assessing The Need For Microenterprises In Mexico To Borrow Start-Up Capital, Heikki Heino, Jose A. Pagan

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Mexico's microenterprises employ about 20 percent of the working age population in the country, and the number of microenterprises has increased substantially over the last decade. Given the role these small business units play in employment and wealth creation, it is important to understand the profile of firms that resort to outside start-up capital to finance their operations. Using microdata from Mexico's National Survey of Microenterprises (Encuesta Nacional de Micronegocios, ENAMIN), we analyze the socioeconomic factors related to the need for outside start-up capital. The findings show that a relatively small number of socioeconomic factors such as the background of …

A Comparison Of Body Image Satisfaction Among Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint College-Age Students, Annmarie Carroll, Diane L. Spangler Apr 2001

A Comparison Of Body Image Satisfaction Among Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint College-Age Students, Annmarie Carroll, Diane L. Spangler

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Several sociocultural factors have been shown to impact body image. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the sociocultural variable of religion, specifically represented by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint (LDS) religion, affects body image in college-age students. Questionnaires assessing body image and beliefs about appearance were administered to male and female LDS and non-LDS students at Brigham Young University, University of Utah, Boston University, and California State University at Fullerton. Results indicated that male students, regardless of religion, were more satisfied with their bodies than their female counterparts. Within-gender comparisions inicated the LDS …

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Managing Dual Relationships, Marleen S. Williams Apr 2001

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Managing Dual Relationships, Marleen S. Williams

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Because LDS people often seek psychological help from LDS counselors, the potential for ethical dilemmas around dual relationships is high. The article reviews current professional literature concerning ethical reponses to dual relationships in the context of LDS culture and practices. Recommendations are made for ethical decision making. Steps in the decision-making process are outlined.

Book Review: Ambiguous Loss. Learning To Live With Unresolved Grief., Virginia B. Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The author, Professor of Family Social Services at the University of Minnesota, is the daughter of the late Paul and of Verena Magdalena Grossenbacher, born Elmer. Her father was a native of Burgdorf, Canton Bern, and had been a main promoter of New Glarus' Swiss American institutions. 3 Thus Dr. Boss begins her book with a personal narrative which describes growing up with the effects of the immigrant experience on family members. The Role Of Dietary Fiber In Dung Size Of Bushy-Tailed Woodrats, Neotoma Cinerea: Its Potential Application To Paleoclimatic Interpretation, Jennifer C. Hallett, Peter E. Wigand Jan 2001

The Role Of Dietary Fiber In Dung Size Of Bushy-Tailed Woodrats, Neotoma Cinerea: Its Potential Application To Paleoclimatic Interpretation, Jennifer C. Hallett, Peter E. Wigand

Western North American Naturalist

A laboratory study was conducted to examine causes underlying variation in woodrat dung size. Eight bushy-tailed woodrats, Neotoma cinerea, were captured and sequentially fed 2 diets of 46% and 63% neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Dung pellets were collected for 2 days following 7 days of acclimation to each diet. Length and width of oven-dried pellets ranged, respectively, from 8.3 to 10.2 mm and 3.2 to 4.9 mm for diet 1, and 8.9 to 12.4 mm and 3.6 to 4.7 mm for diet 2. Body weight ranged from 232.0 to 504.5 g and did not significantly affect dung size. A …

Branchinecta Hiberna, A New Species Of Fairy Shrimp (Crustacea: Anostraca) From Western North America, D. Christopher Rogers, Michael Fugate

Western North American Naturalist

Branchinecta hiberna, a new species of fairy shrimp, is described from temporary pools in the Great Basin region of south central Oregon, northeastern California, and adjacent Nevada. The new species shares several characters with Branchinecta cornigera Lynch, 1958: males bear a similar large patch of small spines on the basal segment of antenna 2, and females bear the similar robust antenna 2 with medial spur, brood pouch shape, and resting egg (cyst) morphology. The new species differs from B. cornigera in the shape of the distal segment of antenna 2 and the number and size of spines on the …

Reading Beyond The Words: Material Letters And The Process Of Interpretation, Sara Jayne Steen Jan 2001

Reading Beyond The Words: Material Letters And The Process Of Interpretation, Sara Jayne Steen

Quidditas

Until recently, early modern letters, and women's letters in particular, have been neglected as a source of information about early modern life and literary culture, although they have much to say, especially about the manuscript culture of which we now have become aware. In the 1990s, scholars began to cross the traditional disciplinary lines between literature and history and examine letters for indications of social and linguistic interrelationships and of personal artistry. Scholars of historical pragmatics now are treating issues such as how forms of address shifted across time; Lynne Magnusson is completing a book that explores early modern Englishwomen’s …
