Seismic Adjustments: The Influence Of Inconvenience And Efficacy Perceptions, State Of Residence, And Demographic Factors, Nicole Elise Anderson Dec 2000

Seismic Adjustments: The Influence Of Inconvenience And Efficacy Perceptions, State Of Residence, And Demographic Factors, Nicole Elise Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that peoples' perceptions of household seismic adjustments, in addition to their perceptions of earthquakes themselves, should predict the likelihood that seismic adjustments are performed. However, little research has been done to address this issue. While recent research has found peoples' perceptions of the effectiveness of household adjustments to influence adjustment levels, people's perceptions of inconvenience of household seismic adjustments - namely the cost, time effort, required cooperation and required knowledge involved in making these adjustments - have been found to not influence seismic adjustment. However, this study did find that the higher the perceived inconveniences …

Few studies have examined gender-specific factors associated with the nonuse of condoms among homeless and runaway youths (HRYs)–a population at high risk for HIV infection. In this article, we evaluate these factors and explore gender differences in background experiences, psychosocial functioning, and risk behaviors among HRYs from four U.S. metropolitan areas. Of 879 sexually active HRYs sampled, approximately 70% reported unprotected sexual intercourse during a 6-month period, and nearly a quarter reported never using condoms in the same period. Among males and females, having only one sex partner in the previous 6 months had the strongest association with nonuse of …

On The Assignment Of Gender To Chicano Anglicisms: Processes And Results, Robert N. Smead Sep 2000

On The Assignment Of Gender To Chicano Anglicisms: Processes And Results, Robert N. Smead

Faculty Publications

The creation of neologisms through linguistic borrowing is a complex process. For donor language models to be transformed into host language replicas, phonological and morphological adaptation must take place. Part and parcel of that adaptation is the assignment of gender to loanwords in a host language like Spanish. The present article examines gender assignment in two corpora of loanwords (New Mexican and Southern Colorado Spanish: N=212 and General Chicano Spanish: N=595). Through the application of variable rule methodology (GoldVarb 2), five factors are posited as significant. Two of these categorically determine gender assignment when present: (1) the biological sex of …

Images Of Christ In Latter-Day Saint Visual Culture, 1900-1999, Noel A. Carmack Jul 2000

Images Of Christ In Latter-Day Saint Visual Culture, 1900-1999, Noel A. Carmack

BYU Studies Quarterly

The motivating impact that visual images of Christ have on members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints cannot be overestimated. Such images often induce feelings of faith and devotion in responsive viewers. For example, Church member Lisa Gemperline of Kaysville, Utah, wrote to the Ensign saying:

Passing a local art gallery one day, I paused, struck by the beauty of painting of Jesus Christ on display. My heart was touched as I looked at the face of the Savior, and I wished I had had the painting in my own home. Afterward, I found myself thinking about …

Factor Analysis Of Theological Constructs Related To Fatalism And Free Will, M. Ardell Broadbent Apr 2000

Factor Analysis Of Theological Constructs Related To Fatalism And Free Will, M. Ardell Broadbent

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

A questionnaire was used to determine to what degree members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endorse doctrinal statements concerning foreknowldge and determinism. A factor analysis of the questionnaire results confirmed lay constructs about an apparent polarization between members who hold strictly literal interpretations of omniscience and omnipotence as opposed to those who hold interpretations further removed from mainstream Christendom but whose positions are validated by LDS doctrine. The relation of demographic variables to the constructs was explored. The existence of simultaneously held conflicting beliefs was confirmed. Some implications for LDS therapists are discussed. A historical overview …

Small Business Promotion And Microlending: A Comparative Assessment Of Jamaican And Israeli Ngos, Benson Honig Apr 2000

Small Business Promotion And Microlending: A Comparative Assessment Of Jamaican And Israeli Ngos, Benson Honig

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Loan programs in two different countries, Israel and Jamaica, are compared and contrasted, in order to identify common elements of project design, selection, and institutional norms. Utilizing agency theory, this article examines what types of borrowers successfully navigate the credit market and to what extent the bureaucratic processes employed by institutions influence and bias outcomes in unpredicted ways in organizations. Entrepreneurs are well recognized as coming from a wide range of backgrounds; indeed, it is the very heterogeneity of their origins that allows many to provide the newness of perspective so necessary for their activities. However, hidden or tacit institutional …

Statistics On Suicide And Lds Church Involvement In Males Age 15-34, Gilbert W. Fellingham, Kyle Mcbride, H. Dennis Tolley, Joseph L. Lyon

BYU Studies Quarterly

Suicide rates among young adults in the United States have been on the rise in the past four decades, with white males at greatest risk. In 1897, Emile Durkheim proposed that religion provided a source of social integration that decreased the likelihood of suicide. His hypothesis was based on research of religious affiliation and suicide rates in Europe. Pope's reanalysis of Durkheim's data, using covariates such as economic status, casts doubt on Durkheim's interpretation of the data. However, others have suggested that religious affiliation is an important factor in the study of suicide, and studies including religious measures other than …

The Lioness In The Text: Mary Of Egypt As Immasculated Female Saint, Onnaca Heron

Quidditas

The oral legend of Saint Mary of Egypt, whose death is assigned the date of about A.D. 430, was first recorded in Greek by Sophronius, bishop of Jerusalem, in the mid-sixth century; roughly two centuries later, Paulus, the deacon of the church of holy Naples, translated Sophronius’s text into Latin. While closely following his Greek source in the Latin translation, Paulus the deacon inserted a “Prologus auctoris,” an introductory allusion to the blinding and healing of Tobit by the archangel Raphael

Gendered Communication Among Second Generation Danish Americans In The "Blair Church:" A Study In Progress, John Mark Nielsen Jan 2000

Gendered Communication Among Second Generation Danish Americans In The "Blair Church:" A Study In Progress, John Mark Nielsen

The Bridge

I am not nor do I pretend to be an expert on gendered communication or feminist criticism. I have, however, used Carol Gilligan's In A Different Voice and Deborah Tannen's You Just Don't Understand in classes with good results.1 While students differ in their responses, these works are accessible to many and have inspired good discussion about how gender may affect decision-making and impact the way messages are sent and received. Additionally, I have found writings by Peggy McIntosh, Carol Smith-Rosenberg, and Barbara Welter helpful in exploring and thinking about the writings of American women writers of the pre-Civil War …
