Civics And The Civil War: The Racist Origins Of The Citizenship Education Industry, Tim Messer-Kruse

ICS Fellow Lectures

The term "civics" was coined soon after the Civil War as a group of America's most powerful northern politicians, jurists, and philanthropists, feared the effects of emancipation and black voting. Part of their plan was to blunt the possibility that African Americans might become a powerful voting block by delegitimizing the common practice of voting along ethnic or racial lines. Towards this end, they established the first educational foundation dedicated to "education for citizenship" throughout the nation. While the principles they promoted successfully became embedded in the structure of American schooling, the racist arguments used in launching them have been …

Overview Of The History Of Bgsu Physical Education And Athletics Programs 1915-2024 (Revised Edition), Janet Parks

BGSU Faculty Books

The first edition of this booklet, An Overview of the Evolution of Bowling Green State University Athletics Programs, 1941-2015 by Professor Emeritus Janet Parks, was published in 2015. That publication had two objectives: (1) to record the long and close relationship between the BGSU athletic department and the health & physical education department, and (2) to provide information about the history of BGSU women’s athletics.

With respect to relationships between health & physical education and athletics, the revised edition retains the information that was in the 2015 version. It supplements that information with descriptions of personnel and structural decisions made …

Creative Translation For Real-World Contexts: English ↔ Spanish, Remy Attig Jan 2024

Creative Translation For Real-World Contexts: English ↔ Spanish, Remy Attig

Open Educational Resources

Creative Translation for Real-World Contexts is one of the first translation textbooks designed for Spanish/English speakers at an intermediate-high (B2) level. This book introduces students to the basic ideas of translation while addressing frequent pain points that recur when working bidirectionally. Additionally, a focus is placed on fostering metacognitive skills by encouraging creative translation from real-world environments such as narration, business, advertising, specialized contexts (including inclusive and queer language), and in situations when there are no clear translations available, such as sci-fi and fantasy works. Chapters alternate between Spanish and English as the languages of discussion, thus providing an equitable …

The talk included stories from mothers and CHWs about the challenges and stresses they face as well as data from interviews and surveys that quantify the impact CHWs have for reducing mothers' stress and providing supports that help mothers and their children …
