Morale: A Review, Bob D. Lee

Visions in Leisure and Business

This is a project to review the Raube publication as a secondary data source. The copyright date on the materials is 1947, but the research data is probably from 1944. Since the publication is out-of-date and cannot be accessed, the publication will be summarized and then comments added by content experts regarding the importance of the data as a historical document as well as a baseline for development of a system for analyzing and modeling employee and management relations.

An Employee Services Model: Morale And Satisfaction, David L. Groves, Bryan Cavins Nov 2021

An Employee Services Model: Morale And Satisfaction, David L. Groves, Bryan Cavins

Visions in Leisure and Business

The Raube manuscript was used as a secondary source to obtain a historical perspective about important factors that influence employees. Included in this assessment was a perspective from employees, management, and unions. This type of analysis is essential to understand the relationships between management and employees and be able to develop a model of collaboration and cooperation from both perspectives.

It is obvious that diverse factors are important during different time periods. It is essential though to understand the different time periods and their influences. This type of information will provide a longitudinal perspective and a better understanding of the …

Has A Pandemic Provided An Opportunity For Food In Tourism?, John D. Mulcahy Mar 2021

Has A Pandemic Provided An Opportunity For Food In Tourism?, John D. Mulcahy

Visions in Leisure and Business

This is an autoethnographic perspective, informed by my experience over four decades as a practitioner, policy maker and academic. The primary thrust of my argument is that, within the wider tourism industry, food in tourism is integral across all sectors, markets, and populations with enormous and sustainable social and economic potential. Realising that potential requires a shift beyond the existing traditional tourism paradigm that is based on narrow economic objectives. The pandemic may have created a tipping point, forcing that paradigm to shift to holistic, collaborative, and sustainable objectives reflecting fresh societal, cultural, environmental, and economic concerns. It is therefore …

Sharing The Journey: Museums And Culinary Tourism, Paula J. Johnson Mar 2021

Sharing The Journey: Museums And Culinary Tourism, Paula J. Johnson

Visions in Leisure and Business

Museums and historic sites have incorporated food-related material into their exhibitions and programs over many years. The extent to which culinary content draws tourists is difficult to pinpoint, but organizations have found that food-related exhibitions, programs, and events resonate in important ways with travelers and local residents alike. In the past two decades, more museums have moved beyond simply adding food and drink components to their programming calendars, and have built entire initiatives around food research, collecting, and public engagement involving critical issues such as migration, cultural representation, equity and accessibility, and environmental sustainability. The American Food History Project at …

Virtual Culinary Tourism In The Time Of Covid 19, Lucy Long Mar 2021

Virtual Culinary Tourism In The Time Of Covid 19, Lucy Long

Visions in Leisure and Business

As the COVID-19 pandemic closed borders and shut down travel in 2020, culinary tourists have turned to virtual experiences for satisfying their curiosity about new foods and tastes. Individuals as well as industry professionals have focused their energies on cooking shows, cookbooks, food memoires, blogs, and both formal media and informal social media. These activities represent a philosophical approach to tourism as a state of seeing or attitude that represents the humanities-based definition of culinary tourism as "eating out of curiosity" rather than the more industry-driven one of food-motivated travel to a destination.

These virtual formats may be reaching a …

We’Ve Got A Moat, And We're Not Afraid To Use It: Culinary Tourism, Borders, And Tasmania, Nicole Tarulevicz

Visions in Leisure and Business

For the first two years of the Covid-19 pandemic Australia had restricted national-borders. Tasmania, Australia’s island-state, added addition restrictions to its state borders. National and state controls had significant impacts on tourism and hospitality, especially culinary tourism. The state of Tasmania attempt to stimulate the sector with vouchers for Tasmanians to travel within the state. The opening of borders to inter-state travelers has been quite disruptive, causing an increase in Covid-19 cases, affecting business and consumers. Additionally, many Tasmanians have limited their activities, although restrictions have been lifted. In this piece I trace our experiences, as a family living in …

Mass – Market Us – Caribbean Cruise Travel During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications For Culinary Tourism, Shayan S. Lallani

Visions in Leisure and Business

Culturally themed dining is a popular offering on mass-market cruises operating in the US- Caribbean market, with companies often marketing these experiences as opportunities for immersion in societies perceived as foreign. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted every aspect of cruise ship dining. As an intimate activity that brings people together through the sharing of food and culinary memories, dining on cruise ships as it was pre-pandemic is no longer feasible during a global event that asks people to stay apart. Cruise lines and authorities responsible for regulating the industry have implemented important safety measures to protect passengers and crew onboard, as …

The module emerged as a reaction to an environment in which tourism, and food tourism, was being identified as increasingly important and on the program team there was a desire to provide students with different perspectives of food. A key element of the module is interaction with industry, via guest lectures, case studies and a field trip. COVID-19 had a significant impact as teaching and learning pivoted online. …

Isolated Destination: Life In Western Australia In The Time Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Cecilia Leong-Salobir

Visions in Leisure and Business

Western Australia, the largest state covering a third of the landmass of Australia has escaped much of the morbidity and deaths of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was made possible due to its draconian measures in keeping the virus at bay through interstate and border closures and high vaccination rates. Domestic tourism has flourished as West Australians, unable to travel outside the state spend their dollars on visiting local attractions. Restaurants, cafes, bars and fast food outlets also do a roaring trade for the same reason.

A Comparison Of The Tourist Destinations Of Las Vegas And Orlando: A Cultural And Psychographic Approach, Yu Liu, Bob Lee, David L. Groves, Fan Du

Visions in Leisure and Business

There is a different of opinion about models for the development of tourism destinations. There are not any standard models. It must be recognized that the individual community must examine its historical background to identify the causal elements that influence events. What usually occurs in tourist development is that a successful model is found and it is transferred to another community without considering how the model has to be adapted and/or adjusted based upon the characteristics of the new community. In some cases, this transfer is successful and in other cases it is a complete failure. The purpose of this …

This Way Or That? Par Ici Ou Par Là?”: Language In The Theme Park, Florian Freitag Mar 2021

This Way Or That? Par Ici Ou Par Là?”: Language In The Theme Park, Florian Freitag

Visions in Leisure and Business

Language and its multiple forms and functions in the theme park have only received scant attention in cultural and media studies-oriented theme park scholarship. In both written and oral form, however, language not only constitutes an integral part of the pluri- or multimedial mix that makes the theme park a hybrid, composite, or meta-medium, but also offers visitors a large variety of information on safety, park operations, and theming. Using examples from parks in both the U.S. and Europe and drawing on such theoretical concepts as paratextuality and "linguistic landscapes," this essay suggests a tripartite approach to studying the complex …

Reflections: Work Place Services, David Groves Jan 2021

Reflections: Work Place Services, David Groves

Visions in Leisure and Business

The profession of employee services was an outgrowth of an early recreation movement at the turn of the 20th century. This does not suggest that there were not programs before this date. It only indicates that the importance was recognized at this point in time.

It flourished through a professional organization that began in the 1940's and eventually saw its demise in the mid-2000. This does not suggest that this movement is not alive today. It only implies that the problems were organizational.

This manuscript is a reflection on past endeavors of the employee service and considerations of its present …
