Esthetics Of Dedalus And Bloom: Nineteenth Century Roots, Structural Metaphors, And Resolutions, Marguerite Harkness

This study explores James Joyce's use of esthetics as a structuring source in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, especially as those esthetics derive from similarities and references to and analogues from the nineteenth century tradition of English poets, novelists, and essayists which includes Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Algernon Swinburne, Walter Horatio Pater, Oscar Wilde and William Butler Yeats. Stephen Dedalus and his esthetics, particularly as they appear in Portrait, are inheritors of that tradition.
