Towards Improving Learning With Consumer-Grade, Closed-Loop, Electroencephalographic Neurofeedback, Zall Soren Hirschstein
Towards Improving Learning With Consumer-Grade, Closed-Loop, Electroencephalographic Neurofeedback, Zall Soren Hirschstein
Senior Projects Spring 2018
Learning is an enigmatic process composed of a multitude of cognitive systems that are functionally and neuroanatomically distinct. Nevertheless, two undeniable pillars which underpin learning are attention and memory; to learn, one must attend, and maintain a representation of, an event. Psychological and neuroscientific technologies that permit researchers to “mind-read” have revealed much about the dynamics of these distinct processes that contribute to learning. This investigation first outlines the cognitive pillars which support learning and the technologies that permit such an understanding. It then employs a novel task—the amSMART paradigm—with the goal of building a real-time, closed-loop, electroencephalographic (EEG) neurofeedback …

Could The Global Health Secuirty Agenda Actually Protect Americans From Emerging Diseases?, Shannon Taylor Dixon
Senior Projects Spring 2018
This senior project aims to challenge the traditional thinking of public health. My inspiration from this topic simply comes from my interest in bettering global health for all people. With an ever shifting political and social environment, this paper strives to seek the most successful strategies in combating infectious diseases. By using three prominent and global infectious diseases, Ebola, Zika and Influenza, this paper analyzes the failures and successes of international support and response teams. This paper also uses the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) as a foundation to analyze and support the claim that successful global health interventions are …

I found my mother’s pregnancy diary when I was 12. The diary presents not only the story of my origin, but also the story of how my biological father left my mother. The diary gave me insight into what unfolded while I was growing inside her, and yet, many questions still remain unanswered. I have heard that trauma experienced by the mother is felt in utero alongside her – I worry one of the first feelings I felt was true sadness. Ideally the diary could answer my unresolved questions, but instead I am left to my imagination. The diary cannot …
The Oppressive Nexus Of Socioeconomic Status And Gender In Egyptian Society: A Marxist Exposition, Stephanie Attar
The Oppressive Nexus Of Socioeconomic Status And Gender In Egyptian Society: A Marxist Exposition, Stephanie Attar
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
The main purpose of this paper is to argue that women from lower socioeconomic status (SES) position are, on the whole, subjected to higher rates of exploitation within the household. This is done by exploring the implications and flaws within traditional neoclassical economic models of the household, and offering a Marxian model of domestic production as an alternative. I argue that incidence of lower SES exacerbates the rate of exploitation by lowering women’s bargaining power within the household. Two forms of bargaining power are posited to be particularly important: (1) the bargaining process over the distribution of resources within the …

"Poetry Is Not A Luxury:" Dis-Ing Self, Dis-Ing Archive, Ehm West
Senior Projects Spring 2018
‘Poetry Is Not a Luxury:’ Dis-ing Self, Dis-sing Archive,” is divided into three separate interrogations of such rts institutions, archives, and constructions of identity. Each chapter explores how these related categories are challenged by curators, artists and artists’ respective styles or forms. My central focus investigates the use of paraficition and disidentification in Cheryl Dunye's work. In both her early video works and first feature-length film The Watermelon Woman, Cheryl Dunye investigates the complexity of her own Black lesbian identity and the constructedness of identity as a whole. She begins her practice as a moving image artist during a …

אמהות ותינוקות: The Adaptation Of A Prenatal Postpartum Depression Intervention For Orthodox Jewish Women, Samantha L. Klein
אמהות ותינוקות: The Adaptation Of A Prenatal Postpartum Depression Intervention For Orthodox Jewish Women, Samantha L. Klein
Senior Projects Spring 2018
Postpartum depression affects 10-15% of the western population, and even larger numbers in specific cultural groups. Certain factors of Orthodox Jewish culture place Orthodox Jewish women at risk for developing perinatal depression. There are two main schools of psychotherapeutic treatment for perinatal depression: interpersonal therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This study proposal is concerned with the adaptation of the Mothers and Babies Course (MBC), a CBT, for an Orthodox Jewish population. 705 participants will be stratified randomly placed in either the MBC, an Interpersonal Therapy intervention, or on a waitlist. I predict that the MBC will not only be an …
