Reducing Severity Of Primary Dysmenorrhea With The Utilization Of Acupressure, Tatum N. Britton Apr 2024

Reducing Severity Of Primary Dysmenorrhea With The Utilization Of Acupressure, Tatum N. Britton

Theses and Graduate Projects

Primary dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological condition associated with painful

cramps during menstruation in the absence of other diseases. It impacts large populations of women worldwide yet is often disregarded and inadequately treated. The ways in which women are treated for this condition often bring forth issues including overuse of medications, drug dependence, adverse reactions from medication use, and increased medical expenses. The utilization of non-pharmacological options has been shown to be effective in managing pain related to primary dysmenorrhea, including the complementary and integrative treatment of acupressure. Guided by Jean Watson’s Human Caring Science Theory, this scholarly DNP-FNP project …

Virtual Reality Pain Intervention For Pediatric Burn Patients, Tanya Ann Hinrichs Jan 2023

Virtual Reality Pain Intervention For Pediatric Burn Patients, Tanya Ann Hinrichs

Theses and Graduate Projects

Burns can be devasting trauma in the pediatric population, leading to lifelong physical and psychological pain and anxiety. Burn pain management is complicated and undertreated traditionally. The purpose of this scholarly project is to examine the use of virtual reality (VR) for distraction in pediatric patients who have experienced a burn to determine if VR improves pain management during painful procedures. A literature review revealed a gap in pain management in pediatric burn survivors with just traditional pharmacologic analgesia during painful procedures. Leininger’s Culture Care Theory provides a theoretical framework for this project’s purpose to determine if implementing a virtual …

The Effectiveness Of Laser Acupuncture In Pain Management: A Systematic Review, June Park Jan 2023

The Effectiveness Of Laser Acupuncture In Pain Management: A Systematic Review, June Park

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background: Pain is a common symptom across many medical conditions that patients experience. Pain management is complex and may need a combination of several management techniques. Laser acupuncture(LA) has been previously used as an adjunct to conventional pain treatments.

Objective: This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of laser acupuncture in various fields of medical situations such as chronic pain, low back pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, postoperative pain and dental procedures.

Methods: A computer based literature search of databases through GoogleScholar and PubMed was used to identify randomized controlled trials(RCTs) published after 2018 that studied the effect of LA in …

Comparison Of Non-Nsaid Pain Management In The Treatment Of Patients With Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis, Nicholas Schmitz Jul 2020

Comparison Of Non-Nsaid Pain Management In The Treatment Of Patients With Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis, Nicholas Schmitz

Theses and Graduate Projects

Objective To compare the efficacy of other modalities and interventions versus standard first-line therapy of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain management in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis

Methods Perform literature reviews outlining patients suffering from Grade II or higher KOA using the Kellgren-Lawrence classification system and currently experiencing symptoms of pain, stiffness, and impaired physical functioning. Use data and results from various studies to compare improvement of symptoms from these modalities versus improvement of NSAIDs alone.

Results Weight loss and physical activity should remain the mainstay of early osteoarthritis treatment to help slow disease progression and symptoms of KOA. Duloxetine …

Using Music Therapy As An Adjunct To Pharmacologic Therapies For Chronic Pain, Andrea L. Rosenberg Jan 2019

Using Music Therapy As An Adjunct To Pharmacologic Therapies For Chronic Pain, Andrea L. Rosenberg

Theses and Graduate Projects

Chronic pain affects more than 1 in 4 individuals in the United States. Many patients are being prescribed opioids to manage this pain, leading to an immense problem involving addiction, overdoses, and preventable deaths. Music therapy has been shown to provide “music analgesia,” improving anxiety, depression, and mobility problems associated with chronic pain conditions. The most benefit was seen when the music was known to the patient, the patient had a role in choosing the music, and when the music had a beat of less than 120 beats per minute. These promising results include a wide variety of chronic pain …

Acute Post-Operative Pain Management: Preventing Overuse Of Opioids, Alison Hirsch Jan 2018

Acute Post-Operative Pain Management: Preventing Overuse Of Opioids, Alison Hirsch

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background: Surgical pain management with opioids is common. The use of multimodal analgesia has been proposed in order to provide opioid-sparing regimens and improve pain control post-operatively. Inadequate control of surgical pain can lead to development of chronic pain. Furthermore, studies have linked acute surgical opioid use to increased risk of long-term use. Long-term opioid use has undesirable, life-altering consequences, including physical dependence and addiction which may lead to overdose or death. Use of a variety of medications in the operative setting can lead to synergistic or additive effects on pain control, thus decreasing post-operative opioid consumption.

Methods: A literature …

Reiki For Pain Control, Jeffrey L. Burt Jan 2014

Reiki For Pain Control, Jeffrey L. Burt

Theses and Graduate Projects

Hemodialysis is a procedure used to remove waste products and electrolytes from the bloodstream when the kidneys are no longer working. In addition to removing waste products and unwanted electrolytes, the process also removes some medications as well; 60% of the most commonly used analgesics are removed during dialysis. For renal patients who experience chronic pain as a result of their illness, this is a serious problem. Dialysis patient are held to the same medication regulations regarding frequency and dosing as the general hospital population, leaving them without pain coverage for longer periods of time. The introduction of a complimentary …
