The neglect of the best interests of minority youth is a problem running rampant in the United States juvenile justice system. In order to address this problem, the factors influencing why racial disparities exist within the juvenile justice system must be known, so that they can eventually be diminished. To better connect with the potential fan base in the United Kingdom, the NFL created another Instagram account, separate from their main “NFL” account, with the username “NFLUK”. In this thesis, I conducted a content analysis comparing a selection of posts made during the 2021 NFL season for each account, “NFL” and “NFLUK” to examine how the NFL modified their posts and communication for their new target audience. In my honors thesis project, I will be analyzing architectural developments in Berlin from the late nineteenth century and up until the end of the Weimar Republic. I will analyze why such developments occurred and will explain the historical background of German society to better explain to uninformed readers. Some of the new architectural styles and forms I will be discussing include expressionism and naturalism, and the prominent architects whose works will be most thoroughly analyzed include Erich Mendelsohn, Bruno Taut, and Walter Gropius, all who helped to lead the search in finding new architectural styles. In this thesis, I have identified weaknesses to the fair use concept in Section 107 in the Copyright Act of 1976. In particular, it is difficult to identify what fair use is in copyright cases because of the ambiguity of the four factors and how they are applied. As a result, inconsistent rulings by judges occur. Therefore, the solution that I propose is to revise the statute to put an appropriate emphasis on the application of all four factors in a cohesive way, specifically the second factor, because the way in which it is viewed now gives it too narrow …

The following thesis will look at the original intent of the Founders when the Sixth Amendment was written. It will then examine the challenges presented to justice both substantively and procedurally in cases of criminal child sexual abuse specifically, including the challenges faced by victims forced to testify during trial long after the trial is over. Women consist of only 27% of workers within the STEM fields while men make up the remaining 73% (Martinez). Several causes contribute to this drastic difference, with one of the main reasons being the lack of confidence that women have in these subject areas. Quantitative ultrasound is a promising alternative method for cancer diagnosis that is non-invasive and cost-effective. This experiment investigated the potential of quantitative ultrasound in diagnosing and differentiating breast and cervical cancer. Using HeLa cells and MDA cells, the speed of sound and attenuation was measured using 5, 10, and 15 MHz transducers. It was found that the speed of sound of the MDA and HeLa cells did not deviate much, with values of 1527.6±3.1 m/s and 1527.5±3.9 m/s, respectively, but the attenuation of the MDA and HeLa did vary, though error in the experiment leaves this conclusion up for debate. …

The present study investigated the relationship between two positive emotions (gratitude and compassion) and persuasion susceptibility. Participants were randomly assigned to be induced to feel gratitude or compassion and read either strong or weak arguments. Participants then rated how favorable they found the arguments. We hypothesized that participants feeling gratitude would be more easily persuaded than those feeling compassion, particularly in the weak argument condition. The hypotheses were not supported. In the strong argument condition, the gratitude and compassion groups were equally persuaded. In the weak argument condition, the compassion group was more persuaded than the gratitude group, though not …

Cadmium (Cd) is a transition metal that offers no nutritional value to human beings. Humans’ main exposure to Cd is through consumption. Cd is extremely soluble, leading to plants readily absorbing it through contaminated water. Plants containing the absorbed Cd are consumed, and the metal accumulates in the body and is toxic. Effects of Cd in the body include renal tubular damage, pulmonary emphysema, epigenetic changes, and carcinogenesis. Previous studies have looked at Cd in cereal based products, and their results revealed low, varied amounts of Cd in the samples. However, most of these studies were performed in Asian countries. …

Understanding the metabolic pathway of a drug is an integral part of pharmaceutical development. Microsomal metabolism is the industry standard to model the metabolism of the drug by the liver in vitro. Our studies employ carbamazepine (CBZ) as a CYP3A4 substrate to develop a method to investigate potential drug-drug interactions involving this enzyme. Toward this end, the metabolite of CBZ, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide (CBZ-E), was synthesized for use as a standard. The purity of the synthesized CBZ-E was 95.2%, and the percent yield was 76.16%. In this thesis, I will argue that Little Women was heavily influenced by Alcott’s mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson’s influence impacted Alcott’s life and writing in two main ways. First, growing up in Concord, surrounded by the influence of well-known Transcendentalist writers and under the mentorship of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Alcott was heavily influenced by his work and the ideals of the transcendentalist movement. The ideas of Transcendentalism that Emerson made popular and wrote about in his pieces such as “Nature” and speeches like “Women” and “The American Scholar” appear in Little Women. This research centers around a millifluidic device designed for the analysis of flowing chemical reactions that may happen too quickly to be analyzed by traditional spectroscopic methods. The device works by combining two simple concepts: fluid flows a certain distance over time and chemical reactions progress over time. Combining these allows for the correlation of reaction progress and distance through the device. Since the flow within the device is laminar, there is friction along the walls of the channel that creates a flow profile that elongates over time. People with substance use disorder are a particularly at risk population who experienced greater hardships during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as previous literature revealed. The present study aims to explore the experiences of individuals with substance use disorder accessing recovery support services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-report survey data was collected from 144 participants who self-identified as having substance use disorder and engaged in recovery support services since COVID-19 began.
