Capping an exposed pulp in order to maintain the vitality of the pulp is the main purpose of pulp capping procedure. The success of this procedure depends on the capacity of pulp capping agent to stimulate pulp tissue repair and dentin bridge formation. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is a biocompatible agent that allows growth, proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal cells in the pulp. Despite its many advantages, the handling of the MTA and its long setting time (4 hours) oblige the clinician to postpone the restoration to another day. A new product, called CPM (ciment de Portland modifié), has been …

Chairside Diagnostic Test Kits In Periodontics – A Review, Sachin Malagi Oct 2012

Chairside Diagnostic Test Kits In Periodontics – A Review, Sachin Malagi

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Traditionally, periodontal diseases have been diagnosed by radiographic and clinical exams, including the assessment of plaque with a plaque index (PI), gingival inflammation with the bleeding on probing index (BOP), probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL). Nowadays, clinical chairside tests are in use for more precise molecular diagnostics and treatments. This review describes some diagnostic test kits on the market that can facilitate the clinical exams and the establishment of a diagnosis.

Ewing’S Sarcoma Of The Mandible: A Case Report, Bhandarkar Gowri Pandarinath, Shetty Hobeiche Oct 2012

Ewing’S Sarcoma Of The Mandible: A Case Report, Bhandarkar Gowri Pandarinath, Shetty Hobeiche

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Ewing’s sarcoma of the jaw is a primitive malignant tumor of the bone. It is commonly seen in children and adolescents. Its occurrence in the head and neck region is unusual and generally involves most frequently the mandible rather than the maxilla. The present case discuss the clinical, diagnostic (radiographic, histopathologic) and therapeutic findings of an ES of the mandible in a 14-year-old boy. Early detection of such lesions is difficult because the signs and the symptoms do not appear until the lesion has progressed considerably. This case elucidates the importance of professional knowledge of the relevant aspects of malignant …

Diabetes: A Risk Factor For Periodontitis, Shaju Jacob, Sonia Nath, Muthu Arunchalam Jun 2012

Diabetes: A Risk Factor For Periodontitis, Shaju Jacob, Sonia Nath, Muthu Arunchalam

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Severe periodontitis is the major reason for tooth loss in adults. Diabetes is one of the major risk factor for progression of periodontitis. Over 200 articles have been published in the English literature in the past 50 years examining the relationship between these two chronic diseases. The purpose of this review is to provide the reader with practical knowledge concerning the relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal diseases. Pubmed and medInd were searched and suitable publications were reviewed. Data interpretation is often confounded by varying definitions of diabetes and periodontitis and different clinical criteria applied to prevalence, extent, and severity …

Oral Symptoms Leading To Diagnosis Of Sarcoidosis, D.R. Mahesh Jan 2012

Oral Symptoms Leading To Diagnosis Of Sarcoidosis, D.R. Mahesh

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology that may manifest in the oral and maxillofacial region. Enlargement of the major salivary glands may be the first identifiable sign of this condition, which is often characterized by a variety of nonspecific symptoms. In this report, we present the case of a patient suffering from xerostomia, dysgeusia, burning sensation, xerophthalmia and bilateral parotid gland enlargement. The diagnosis of systemic sarcoidosis was established, based on the clinical associated symptoms as well as the histopathologic results of a biopsy of labial minor salivary glands.

Étude De L'Effet De La Convergence Des Parois Axiales Sur La Rétention Des Couronnes Scellées, Pamela Bejjany, Nouhad Rizk Jan 2012

Étude De L'Effet De La Convergence Des Parois Axiales Sur La Rétention Des Couronnes Scellées, Pamela Bejjany, Nouhad Rizk

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

The aim of this in vitro study is to investigate the variation in the retention of ceramo-metallic crowns on identical dental preparations, differing only by the convergence of their axial walls. Materials and methods: Sixty molars were prepared; the convergence of the axial walls was of 20 degrees (maximum convergence), 30 degrees (acceptable convergence) or 60 degrees (critical convergence putting at risk the durability of treatment). Infrastructures were sealed using two types of ciment- a resin and a glass ionomer ciments- for the same axial convergence. Results: for small angulations (<30 degrees), the use of glass ionomer ciment provided a higher retention than that provided by the resin ciment. For conical dental preparations (≥30 degrees), bonding with resin ciment offered a better retention and a greater resistance to displacement forces.

The rehabilitation of patients with failing or missing dentition using titanium implants has dramatically changed in the last decades. Despite the predictability of implant therapy, failures that mandate implant removal do occur. The aim of our study was to determine the failure rates of implants placed during the last nine years at the dental clinic of the Faculty of Dental Medicine at Saint-Joseph University, Beirut. 640 individuals received dental implants; failures were clustered in 75 (11.7%) patients (27 men and 48 women, mean age 49.66 ±13.4 years). The total failure rate was 5.68%. Most failures were early (66.3%) and a …

Global Prevalence Of Periodontitis: A Literarure Review, Shaju Jacob Jan 2012

Global Prevalence Of Periodontitis: A Literarure Review, Shaju Jacob

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

The prevalence of periodontitis is dependent on the studied population and the case definition adopted. Periodontal diseases assume a greater global importance as the senior population is on the rise in most countries. The aim of this article is to review the global prevalence of periodontitis. Studies describing the prevalence of periodontitis in the world were searched through various indices using the key words ‘periodontitis, national survey, prevalence’ and reviewed. Many national surveys have used the WHO method for assessing prevalence. Yet several studies have not used the community periodontal index (CPI) for periodontitis case definition. Most surveys have used …
