Perceptions Of Psychology Among Seminary And Biology Students At Andrews University, Sandro Moraes Jan 2013

Perceptions Of Psychology Among Seminary And Biology Students At Andrews University, Sandro Moraes

Master's Theses

Problem. Both pastors and biologists frequently interact with individuals. These contacts often involve conversations that deal with an individual’s feelings, behaviors, and the relationship between mind and body. Thus, how seminarians and biologists perceive psychology will greatly affect such interactions. Therefore it is important to know how both professionals perceive psychology. This is not all that different from the research biologists perform as they learn about the brain. Because of the interrelatedness between these two professions, what are the perceptions of psychology among seminary and biology students at Andrews University? -- Method. The data gathered from the responses of biology …

Exercise Motivators And Exercise Causality Among Andrews University Students: A Correlational Study, Anna T. Piskozub Jan 2013

Exercise Motivators And Exercise Causality Among Andrews University Students: A Correlational Study, Anna T. Piskozub

Master's Theses

Purpose of the Study. A healthy, fit body and well-developed mind have been known to be very effective in helping students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. Understanding what motivators influence students in exercise participation, and how such motivators may influence choice in undertaking physical activities can be valuable information when planning college physical fitness courses and wellness activities. Further, it may reverse the trend of the findings that Andrews University students’ fitness declines while being in college as measured by 10 years of Microfit aggregated data. The purpose of this study was to identify the most important exercise motivators …

The Effect Of Bmi On The Age Of Menarche In Adolescent Girls, Samara R. Sterling Jan 2013

The Effect Of Bmi On The Age Of Menarche In Adolescent Girls, Samara R. Sterling

Master's Theses

Problem. Over the past century, the age of menarche has consistently declined in the United States and globally. Obesity has also increased by 82% globally over the past 20 years. Obesity, as measured by BMI percentiles in children, may contribute to the declining age of menarche. -- Method. Adolescent girls ages 12-19 were examined in California and Michigan. Physical development and the age of menarche were assessed through an online questionnaire. Height and weight measurements were taken at a clinic and converted to BMI percentile values. -- Results. A negative correlation was observed between BMI percentile values and the age …

Toward A Biblical View Of Collective Responsibility For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In The Twenty-First Century, Miroslav Danihel Jan 2013

Toward A Biblical View Of Collective Responsibility For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In The Twenty-First Century, Miroslav Danihel

Master's Theses

The notion of collective responsibility is an issue that is not very popular in the postmodern society. However, the idea of collective responsibility can be found in the Bible. This thesis examines philosophical, ethical, and biblical sources on the subject. The biblical evidence focuses on examining Josh 7 and Ezek 18, as well as some of the New Testament contributions to the topic. The relationship between collective responsibility, collective personality, and collective punishment is discussed. The thesis acknowledges collective responsibility as a valid biblical doctrine and proposes its application for church members, leaders, and the decision-making process in the Seventh-day …

From Clear Fulfillment To Complex Prophecy: The History Of The Adventist Interpretation Of Revelation 9, From 1833 To 1957, Jon Hjorleifur Stefansson Jan 2013

From Clear Fulfillment To Complex Prophecy: The History Of The Adventist Interpretation Of Revelation 9, From 1833 To 1957, Jon Hjorleifur Stefansson

Master's Theses

Seventh-day Adventists originally agreed on the meaning of Rev 9 and regarded it as a very important prophecy, whereas today there is no consensus on this prophecy, which is regarded as both complex and non-vital. This thesis seeks to explain why this change occurred by tracing the history of the development of the interpretation of the fifth and sixth trumpets from 1833 to 1957, both in published and unpublished primary sources. Critics of the traditional interpretation found fault with its exegesis and historical application. Traditionalists never answered their questions comprehensively and this is the main reason why consensus was lost. …

The Lifestyle And Prevalence Of Vegetarianism In Seventh-Day Adventist Hispanics, Maribel Hidalgo Jan 2013

The Lifestyle And Prevalence Of Vegetarianism In Seventh-Day Adventist Hispanics, Maribel Hidalgo

Master's Theses

Problem. Hispanics are disproportionately affected by chronic diseases and are a growing and significant population. There is minimal research regarding the lifestyle of the Seventh-day Adventists (SDA) among the Hispanic community. The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to ascertain the lifestyle, health status, eating and physical activity habits of the SDA Hispanics from part of the Midwest. -- Method. An anonymous survey was distributed in person to a convenience sample of 150 participants 18 years or older in the SDA Hispanic churches of Berrien Springs, Grand Rapids, Chicago, and Indianapolis. The survey was divided into five sections: demographics, …

Evaluating Hypotheses That Explain Non-Continuous Responses To Syllable Periods ("Skipping") During Phonotaxis By Female Acheta Domesticus, Tori Joy Steely Jan 2013

Evaluating Hypotheses That Explain Non-Continuous Responses To Syllable Periods ("Skipping") During Phonotaxis By Female Acheta Domesticus, Tori Joy Steely

Master's Theses

One way to classify female cricket phonotactic response is as "non-skipping" or "skipping." "Skipping" is defined as crickets that respond to a non-continuous range of calling songs. This investigation evaluates the temporal aspects of typical phonotactic protocols and attempts to determine if "skipping" is due to a filtering mechanism or if "skipping" is an artifact of testing protocol. Rather than a notch filter or testing parameters inhibiting a phonotactic response to a syllable period within the range of a band pass filter, I hypothesize that "skipping" occurs as a result of the probabilistic nature of phonotaxis.

Features Of Copulation And The Copulation Call In Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens), Amanda Sandler Jan 2013

Features Of Copulation And The Copulation Call In Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens), Amanda Sandler

Master's Theses

Glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) breed along the Pacific Northwest coast where they perform highly stereotypical behavior patterns, including associated vocalizations. Early studies suggested the copulation call functions in maintaining pair bonds. Recent studies, however, challenge the idea that strengthening pair bonds is the only function of this call. I described the spectral and temporal features of the copulation call and investigated whether copulation behaviors varied over the course of the 2012 nesting season. During continuous observations from a blind in daylight hours, I documented the start and stop time for every copulation in a sample area of a nesting colony …
