The gravitational-wave (GW) sky may include nearby pointlike sources as well as stochastic backgrounds. We perform two directional searches for persistent GWs using data from the LIGO S5 science run: one optimized for pointlike sources and one for arbitrary extended sources. Finding no evidence to support the detection of GWs, we present 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper-limit maps of GW strain power with typical values between 2-20×10-50strain2Hz-1 and 5-35×10 -49strain2Hz-1sr-1 for pointlike and extended sources, respectively. The latter result is the first of its kind. We also set 90% C.L. limits on the narrow-band root-mean-square GW strain from interesting targets …

A study of events containing two tau leptons with high transverse momentum has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.33 fb-1. The tau candidates were identified from their decays into electrons, muons or hadronic jets. The number of tau-pair candidates has been compared with the prediction from the Standard Model, where the largest contribution is expected from Bethe-Heitler processes. The total visible cross section was extracted. Standard Model expectations agree well with the measured distributions, also at high invariant mass of the tau pair.

Socially Induced Ovulation Synchrony And Its Effect On Seabird Population Dynamics, Shandelle M. Henson, J. M. Cushing, James L. Hayward

Faculty Publications

Spontaneous oscillator synchrony is a form of self-organization in which populations of interacting oscillators ultimately cycle together. This phenomenon occurs in a wide range of physical and biological systems. In rats and humans, oestrous/menstrual cycles synchronize through social stimulation with pheromones acting as synchronizing signals. In previous work, we showed that glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) can lay eggs synchronously on an every-other-day schedule, and that synchrony increases with colony density. We posed a discrete-time mathematical model for reproduction during the breeding season based on the hypothesis that pre-ovulatory luteinizing hormone surges synchronize by means of visual, auditory and/or olfactory cues. …

The Sabbath And The Most Prominent Magisterial Reformers, P. Gerard Damsteegt Aug 2011

The Sabbath And The Most Prominent Magisterial Reformers, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

This paper focuses on the Reformers’ views on the Sabbath at Creation, instruction of proper and improper Sabbath observance throughout the Scriptures, reasons for the abolition of the Sabbath, and finally, reasons for the change of the weekly day of worship from Saturday to Sunday. As much as possible, this research will use the primary works of the Reformers. The views of these Reformers will be dealt with chronologically, which means that, generally, the positions of the early Reformers on the various aspects of the Sabbath will be discussed first, and will be followed by those who wrote later.

Incorporating Case Studies Into An Undergraduate Genetics Course, Marlene Murray Aug 2011

Incorporating Case Studies Into An Undergraduate Genetics Course, Marlene Murray

Faculty Publications

Genetics is considered one of the most challenging courses in the biology curricula at both the secondary and post secondary levels. Case based teaching has been shown to improve student perception and performance outcomes in both non-science and science courses. Thus in an effort to improve outcomes, case studies were integrated into an undergraduate genetics course as a supplement to lecture and replacement to recitation. Student perception and performance when case studies were used was compared to two previous years before the incorporation of case studies. Student course evaluations, pre and post surveys of student knowledge, and exam scores indicated …

The Impact Of Computer Literacy And Library Anxiety On Students' Library Experience, Terry Dwain Robertson, Lauren Matacio

Faculty Publications

Despite growing up with technology, are college freshmen well prepared for library research, or does their computer savvy actually put them at a disadvantage? Do other factors such as library anxiety affect students’ research experience? How can secondary educators better prepare their students for the leap from a small school library to a large college or university library? How can college librarians make new students’ first library experience a positive one? These questions are addressed in this article.

"Librarians have always promoted knowledge access, a role that is even more significant today, with the amount of information bombarding students on a daily basis. Granting librarians information “leader-acy” positions and collaborative roles in teaching, learning, curriculum planning, and program ad-ministration fits well with the established guidelines by the Association of School Librarians, the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.Students’ educational development will be enhanced when principals, teachers, and librarians collaborate in learning, teaching, and implementing critical-thinking skills."

Soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) are thought to be magnetars: neutron stars powered by extreme magnetic fields. These rare objects are characterized by repeated and sometimes spectacular gamma-ray bursts. The burst mechanism might involve crustal fractures and excitation of non-radial modes which would emit gravitational waves (GWs). We present the results of a search for GW bursts from six galactic magnetars that is sensitive to neutron star f-modes, thought to be the most efficient GW emitting oscillatory modes in compact stars. One of them, SGR 0501+4516, is likely 1kpc from Earth, an order of magnitude closer …

Benefits, Challenges And Strategies Of Open Access And Repository Implementation In Seventh-Day Adventist University Libraries: An International Perspective, Silas Bruscagin Marques Dr. May 2011

Benefits, Challenges And Strategies Of Open Access And Repository Implementation In Seventh-Day Adventist University Libraries: An International Perspective, Silas Bruscagin Marques Dr.

Faculty Publications

Open Access and institutional repositories are rapidly making their way into the scientific communication s pipe line. Many universities are implementing their own intellectual production repositories using open access strat egy and technology as a means for maintaining and accessing these archives. With this trend, libraries and researchers have free access to an abundance of subject, institutional and author access points. The literature is becoming robust in presenting the results of research depicting benefits from its use and the challenges libraries face implementing such initiatives. This research investigated 92 university and technological library directors from 66 different countries regarding their …

State Methamphetamine Precursor Policies And Changes In Small Toxic Lab Methamphetamine Production, Duane C. Mcbride, Yvonne Terry-Mcelrath, Jamie Chriqui, Jean O'Connor, Curtis Vanderwaal, Karen Mattson

Faculty Publications

Domestic production of methamphetamine in small toxic labs (STLs) results in significant community safety and health consequences. This paper examines the effects of state-level policies implemented in the middle of the last decade in reaction to a rapid increase in STL labs. These policies focused on controlling access to the methamphetamine precursor chemicals ephedrine and pseudoephedrine and the relationship of such policies with actual STL seizure rates. Data include (a) primary legal research on state laws/regulations in all 50 states in effect as of October 1, 2005; and (b) STL seizure counts for 2004–2006. Results from random effects cross-sectional time-series …
