Female Subjectivity In Times Of Constraint: A Study Of Naguib Mahfouz And Gabriel García Márquez, Safinaz Ahmed Saad Mahmoud

Theses and Dissertations

This study aims at examining the depiction of female characters in two postcolonial novels set in the mid-twentieth century, namely, Naguib Mahfouz’s The Beginning and the End and Gabriel García Márquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Critic Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s theory of the silent female subaltern poses a challenge to reading the (hi)story of any female character when the narrator assumes a dominant role in the literary narrative. Research in this thesis extends Spivak’s dichotomy of silence and speech to accommodate a middle ground that allows us read the characters’ presence as speaking voices of their (hi)stories. While Spivak is …

Come My Staff, I Lean Upon You: An Iconographic And Contextual Study Of Sticks And Staves From 18th Dynasty Egypt, Nicholas R Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Sticks and staves are some of ancient Egypt’s most versatile tools: they can function as badges of status, walking aids, tools for farmers, weapons for guards, or any combination of these. Though earlier studies have examined the names and types of staves from all periods of ancient Egypt, no former scholarship has exclusively examined the ways in which sticks are used in tomb decoration from the 18th Dynasty. By looking at how the staves are used in elite tomb decoration, one is able to understand how the staff had both a practical use as well as symbolic meaning associated with …

Evaluation, Coordination And Execution: An Analysis Of Military Coup Agency At Instances Of Successful Coup D’État, Karim El-Baz

Theses and Dissertations

Theoretically, members of the ground forces are the normal coup plotters as they have sufficient training and equipment to accomplish the objectives of a successful coup. Henceforth, what is quite puzzling is mixed coups. These coups include other officers from other service branches; taking into account, the ability of ground forces to execute the coup without the interference of other service branches. Therefore, the question is why would the coup leader involve those whom he would not tactically need for the coups’ execution. This is only one side of the puzzle that asks why and how a mixed coup agency …

The Business Of Rescue -- Uncovering The Relationship Between Immigration Policy And The Rescue Industry., Diya Ray

Theses and Dissertations

The global movement of women has created a panic across borders in the 21st century, when it is suspected that they have been forced against their will to engage in sex work, which has manifested in the formation of what has come to be called the Rescue Industry (Augustin, 2007). Governmental agencies and efforts have been directed at 'rescuing' victims of trafficking from an assumption of coercion, force and victimhood. However, a closer look at the profiling of these individuals, the process of victim construction and the problematization of trafficking being equated to prostitution reveals that a significant number of …

The Limbs Factory: Circuits Of Fear And Hope And The Political Imagination On The Western Sahara, Kenza Yousfi

Theses and Dissertations

The wall, as a practice and an imagination, involves an engagement with modes of producing fear in the contemporary moment. This research explores the relationships between the walling imagination in the weaponized field of the Moroccan-built wall in the Western Sahara and the political in its making of the present. The question I explore ethnographically is: What are the ways in which the political is perpetually enacted vis-à-vis the walling imagination? From my ethnographic site—the Saharawi refugee camps—I engage with Saharawi everydayness in navigating violent structural confinements: the wall, the camp, the national liberation master plan, and the performances of …

The rapid recombination between the photogenerated electrons and the holes on the TiO2 surface can be diminished by using carbon-TiO2 composites, especially Graphene (G) and Graphene Oxide (GO), which improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 and stability under UV-visible light illumination. The determination of surface properties including surface acidity, polarity and surface area of photocatalysts allows the control and enhancement in the photocatalytic efficiency. This study aims at investigating the surface properties of TiO2-G and TiO2-GO nanocomposites using independent techniques, correlating these …

Parametric Freeform-Based Construction Site Layout Optimization, Ibrahim Abotaleb Jun 2015

Parametric Freeform-Based Construction Site Layout Optimization, Ibrahim Abotaleb

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional approaches to the construction site layout problem have been focused mainly on rectilinear facilities where the importance proximity measures are mainly based on Cartesian distances between the centroids of the facilities. This is a fair abstraction of the problem; however it ignores the fact that many facilities on construction sites assume non-rectilinear shapes that allow for better compaction within tight sites. The main focus of this research is to develop a new approach of modeling site facilities to surpass limitations and inefficiencies of previous models and to ensure a more realistic approach to construction site layout problems. A construction …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the ambivalent definition of manhood in Shakespeare's Macbeth. It explores the normative cultural constructions of masculinity carried forth from ancient times to the Renaissance to situate the character of Macbeth in the realm of heroic masculinity. By applying the framework of Freud's psychoanalytic theory, particularly in its interpretation of gender and the role of the unconscious, Shakespeare's male hero's struggle to establish, maintain and defend his masculinity becomes comprehensible. The societal and cultural expectations that define masculinity appear at odds not only with the world of the play, but with the world in general. Culture and society …

Polarity And Peacekeeping: The Effect Of The International Structure On United Nations Peacekeeping Missions, Abigail Appleton Jun 2015

Polarity And Peacekeeping: The Effect Of The International Structure On United Nations Peacekeeping Missions, Abigail Appleton

Theses and Dissertations

The end of the Cold War produced a significant shift in the structure of the international system. It also witnessed an increased use of peacekeeping as a mechanism to deal with conflicts. This increase is often attributed to a supposed “changing nature of conflict,” where intra-state war has become more common than the classic inter-state war and conflict has become more violent, brutal, and complicated. However, these descriptions leave important aspects of peacekeeping operations unexplained. A better explanation is needed for the international community’s increased intervention in conflicts. This thesis argues that the bipolar international structure of the Cold War …
