The Afghan Government's Relationship With The Pashtun Community And Its Effect On Stability; A Comparative Approach, Alfred Jasins

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how the Afghan government's relationship with the Pashtun communities affects the group's acquiescence and support, thereby creating a less belligerent and more stable environment. The emphasis on the Pashtun communities is especially relevant due to their historical role as king maker, as well as the leaderships primary threat of delegitimization and conflict. To fully understand how the current Karzai government's relationship with the Pashtun communities has failed to create conditions amenable to stability and has generally fostered an environment of discord and conflict, this analysis will utilize a comparative approach. The comparison …

Financial And Institutional Sustainability Of Development Projects: The Case Of The Green Corridor Project And The Case Of The High Dam Lake Area Project, Nadine Hisham Fawzy

Theses and Dissertations

This study aims to discuss the negative implications of the narrow scope adopted by many donor agencies when addressing sustainability for development projects implemented in developing countries. This has resulted in a very limited impact when it comes to official development assistance (ODA). The study explores the main challenges facing the sustainability of local community development projects in specific; explores attempts to address those challenges; and then presents a more sustainable approach that is based on robust financial and institutional pillars. It argues that the introduction of such pillars creates a new approach to local community development projects that enhance …

The growing presence and availability of international schools in Cairo has reconfigured particular aspects of culture, care, and freedom for elite subjects over the past forty years. The main research question is: how are globalized notions of well being, self-realization, and personal fulfillment transmitted through the work of neoliberal discourse and staff at international schools in Cairo. It has been identified in this thesis that certain forms of care and responsibility are tightly bound and shaped by a neoliberal …

The Role And Impact Of Social Media On Arab Networks On Arab Spring: A Case Study On The Egyptian Revolution, Mai Nabil Allam

Theses and Dissertations

The wide spread of social media allows undisciplined groups to share and communicate quickly at a reduced cost so that they can easily form collective actions. Thus, electronic revolutions begin worldwide as all people for the first time in history are politically conscious and interactive. This study examines the role of social media in the Arab uprising with the Egyptian revolution as a case study. This primary research linked both the uses and gratification theory to the new usage of social media and the spiral of silence theory to people confidence in forming collective actions. A survey was conducted among …

Seeking A Place In A Nation: The Exodus Of The Tunisian Jewish Population 1954-1967, Sean Haley Jun 2012

Seeking A Place In A Nation: The Exodus Of The Tunisian Jewish Population 1954-1967, Sean Haley

Theses and Dissertations

In the eleven years after the independence and creation of the Republic of Tunisia, the population of the Jewish community declined by approximately 88.7% because of emigration to France, Israel, and other countries. This period, as will be shown, was critical in shaping the ethno-religious arrangement of peoples in Tunisia today. This occurred because a centralizing newly-independent state created a nation through identity based upon citizenship. Tunisia is a particularly good case study of homogenizing post-colonial nation-states because the government never sought to exclude any part of the population through direct action. Instead, domestic and international events that shook the …

Egypt's Post-Colonial Approaches To Internal Self-Determination, Charlotte Kaeppel Jun 2012

Egypt's Post-Colonial Approaches To Internal Self-Determination, Charlotte Kaeppel

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the linkage between the right to self-determination and democracy. In view of the popular uprisings taking place throughout the Middle East and North Africa, it is highly relevant to revisit the concept of self-determination. In particular, considering the undetermined nature of the right to self-determination, this thesis examines the contemporary legal meaning of self-determination. Specifically, it questions the prospects of â the peopleâ to self-determination against the background of undemocratic structures at the global level. Following the introduction, the second part of this thesis deals with a critical overview of the international legal ideology on self-determination. In …

The Occupy Wall Street Movement As A 'Space Of Profanation', Alberto Rinaldi Jun 2012

The Occupy Wall Street Movement As A 'Space Of Profanation', Alberto Rinaldi

Theses and Dissertations

Born in a crucial historical moment - the decennial of 9/11, and more than ten years after the anti-globalization movement of Seattle - the Occupy Wall Street movement (OWS) has awaken again protest and dissent, for the first time at the heart of the largest financial centre of world. More â mature' than its predecessor and also increasingly more encompassing, this movement is presently working as a sort of â sounding board' of protest and dissent, finding its inspiration in the Arab Spring, the Spanish indignados, and in all other forms of systemic protests that have flared around the world …

Public Education In The United States In A Post-Brown Era: The Antinomies Of Equal Protection Doctrine, Sarah Rizk Jun 2012

Public Education In The United States In A Post-Brown Era: The Antinomies Of Equal Protection Doctrine, Sarah Rizk

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, public schools are primarily financed by local tax on property. This property-tax-based system of finance is advantageous for people living in wealthy districts, as they benefit from greater educational funding resources. Residents of poorer districts, however, have the disadvantage of higher taxation that is needed to balance the deficit created by the lower value of property in these areas in order to finance local services. Through the use of local exclusionary planning and zoning powers, local governments can ensure that residents contribute a minimum amount of taxation to fund local services and to zone out â …

Education In The Syrian Golan Heights Under International Human Rights Law And International Humanitarian Law, Michelle Strucke

Theses and Dissertations

Compulsory education, in particular history and religious education, is often used by states as a critical tool of nation building, as states attempt to socialize and shape the attitudes and beliefs of citizens in line with their strategic aims. As a state that defines itself as "Jewish and democratic" and that has instituted special compulsory education curricula for students on the basis of ethnicity and religion, the state of Israel is no exception. The Syrian Golan despite being under occupation by Israel for the last forty-five years has been written about only sparingly compared to the overwhelming amount of research …

Private Military Companies: Assisting The Transnational Capitalist Class In Accumulation By Dispossession, Tori Aarseth Jun 2012

Private Military Companies: Assisting The Transnational Capitalist Class In Accumulation By Dispossession, Tori Aarseth

Theses and Dissertations

The topic of this thesis is the privatization of security and military services, and how the emergence of a private military industry should be understood. The argument I put forward has two integrated components. The first has to do with the ways in which privately provided security differs from publicly provided security, and the second with how privatization of security affects the distribution of power between social classes. I argue that privately provided security differs from publicly provided security in three main ways. First, the provision of security is depoliticized and turned into a technical issue that should be dealt …

The Voice Of The Other: Representations Of The United States In Egyptian Popular Discourse, Sara Pulliam Jun 2012

The Voice Of The Other: Representations Of The United States In Egyptian Popular Discourse, Sara Pulliam

Theses and Dissertations

The Egyptian-American relationship is complex and problematic on many levels and, similar to Arab-American relations as a whole, often draws the attention of policy makers and academics within political science and its subfield of international relations. Previous analyses of this topic have focused on the dimensions surrounding US policies in the Middle East and the consequences of these policies on both the US and the Arab region. These studies range from being scathingly critical, such as Gregory's The Colonial Present, to advocating for a US foreign policy that is based in rational pursuit of interests that overlooks the discontent of …

Linguistic Projection And The Ownership Of English: Solidarity And Power With The English Language In Egypt, Alexander Lewko Jun 2012

Linguistic Projection And The Ownership Of English: Solidarity And Power With The English Language In Egypt, Alexander Lewko

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates aspects of English usage in Egypt, including any possible linguistic projection of solidarity or power with other Egyptians, and the degree, if any, of linguistic ownership of English. As in many other Expanding Circle contexts, English realizes its role in Egypt as lingua franca in order to fulfill educational and business transactions. English is used to such a degree in the Egyptian context that it could at some point become its own variety of World English. Yet, it is possible that a speaker could produce either English or Arabic in different situations in reaction to perceived social …

Seating Arrangement And Cooperative Learning Activities: Students' On-Task/Off-Task Participation In Efl Classrooms, Nohayer Lotfy

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that student participation is affected by a number of factors that include students' gender, personality differences as well as class environment. This class environment includes classroom seating arrangements which are believed to play an important role in fostering students' on-task behavior. However, how a seating arrangement can encourage on-task or off-task behavior is found to depend on how far this seating arrangement agrees with the activity being done and the interaction pattern aimed at in class. On the other hand, some research linked teachers' choice of different classroom seating arrangement and their beliefs in their role inside …

The Red Sea brine pools are unique environments to assess the biochemical adaptation of marine bacteria. The role of nitrogen in marine biogeochemistry is central and greatly influences the diverse elements including carbon and phosphorus. Anammox communities play a significant role in the total nitrogen loss especially in deep sea and deep ocean ecosystems. Despite this, the biodiversity of Anammox bacteria have not been previously investigated in any brine pool ecosystems. With the advances of the metagenomics based approaches, the exploration of the yet uncultured microbial communities including the Anammox bacteria has taken different perspectives. Anammox communities are currently analyzed …
