Coptic Orthodox Christianity: Religious Transformation In The Time Of Neoliberalism, Marsil Kalliney Jun 2010

Coptic Orthodox Christianity: Religious Transformation In The Time Of Neoliberalism, Marsil Kalliney

Theses and Dissertations

While the Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates a unique historical trajectory, contemporary Copts' conceptualization of religious discourses reflects a transformation impacted by political and economic global forces. The international prevailing ideological paradigm of neoliberalism is highlighted by the shift from governments into individuals through economic and political practices. This thesis illustrates the transformation using an example of a Coptic charity organization redefining itself to be a non-governmental organization (NGO) in response to the dominant paradigm of neoliberalism. The organization is a microcosm reflecting global financial and political forces as well as members' religious beliefs as they relate to these global forces. …

Equalizing Classroom Participation: Public Speaking Contexts In The Egyptian Efl Classroom, Mariah Jane Fairley Jun 2010

Equalizing Classroom Participation: Public Speaking Contexts In The Egyptian Efl Classroom, Mariah Jane Fairley

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that about one third of the students in a given classroom are silent, as defined as those students taking fewer than half the class average number of turns. Further, more of these silent students tend to be female than male, an imbalance that has been strongly linked to the phenomenon of male conversational dominance, expressed through: taking more and longer turns; interruption, especially of female students; calling out; topic control; and even the ignoring and insulting of others' contributions. The causes of male conversational dominance and the tendency towards female silence have been theoretically linked to socialization …

The Effect Of Error Correction Types On Grammatical Accuracy In Student Essay Revision, Neveen Saeed Abd Al Kareem Al Saeed Jun 2010

The Effect Of Error Correction Types On Grammatical Accuracy In Student Essay Revision, Neveen Saeed Abd Al Kareem Al Saeed

Theses and Dissertations

There has been an on-going debate on whether error feedback helps students to improve their grammatical accuracy from one draft to the other (Ferris, 1999; Truscott, 1996; 1999). Some studies found that error correction was effective (Ferris & Roberts, 2001) and others refuted this argument (Semke, 1984; Kepner, 1990). Their findings showed that feedback had no or non-significant effects on accuracy. According to previous research, one area which has not been properly studied is a comparison between groups receiving feedback and a no feedback group. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of feedback on grammatical accuracy by comparing three …

The thesis inquiry required the search for more information than published about Egyptian radio stations. It also surveys the role of North Upper Egypt Radio Station in developing rural and urban female listeners at all levels.

Configuring Palestine: A Neo-Gramscian Perspective Of International Institutions In Palestinian State Formation, Suzanne Maureen Morrison Jun 2010

Configuring Palestine: A Neo-Gramscian Perspective Of International Institutions In Palestinian State Formation, Suzanne Maureen Morrison

Theses and Dissertations

Through international institutions the international community has played a major role in the Palestinian territories, particularly since the Oslo Accords in 1993, in formulating a neoliberal framework for political and economic development for a potential Palestinian state and economy. In this schema, a neoliberal conceptualization of Palestine means that no state is actually required to induce into existence the neoliberal condition in Palestine. This thesis considers the role of international institutions in inducing the neoliberal condition into the conceptualization of Palestine. By utilizing a neo-Gramscian analytical framework I ascertained that international institutions ensure neoliberal values in configuring and conceptualizing Palestine …

Fdi Versus Local Industrial Investment: A Human Capital Perspective Of Development, Hebatallah Hamdy El Shamy

Theses and Dissertations

This research looks at three automotive components' factories in Egypt, equally benchmarked in all aspects, except for the nationality and nature of their ownership structure and their unique management arrangements and styles. One is totally foreign owned, but co-managed, the second is partly foreign owned, and managed, and the third is totally Egyptian-owned and managed. The study eventually, seeks to uncover the inner workings of the role of FDI vis-Ã -vis that of local industrial intellectual elite (progressive entrepreneurs), in conjunction with the pattern of intermittent reliance on foreign technical assistance. It probes the different ways these three different arrangement …

Manufacturing Consent: Italy, The Mutamassirun, Egypt, And The Invasion Of Libya, Andrew Heiss Jun 2010

Manufacturing Consent: Italy, The Mutamassirun, Egypt, And The Invasion Of Libya, Andrew Heiss

Theses and Dissertations

The period between 1902â 12 reveals a number of insights into both Italy's imperial history and Egypt's colonial experience. Facing an economic crisis at home, hundreds of thousands of Italians emigrated to expatriate communities throughout the world, including Egypt. This massive hemorrhage of Italy's population led the government to embrace emigration, and new policies enacted by the Italian foreign ministry after Italy's military failures in Somalia and Eritrea recast migrant Italians as â colonistsâ and global Italian communities as â colonies.â Egypt posed a particularly difficult problem for the foreign ministryâ because of the multi-ethnic character of the Egyptian social …

Till' Death (Or Conversion) Do Us Part - Coptic Divorces In Egyptian Courts And Their Implications, Barbara Viktoria Bishay Jun 2010

Till' Death (Or Conversion) Do Us Part - Coptic Divorces In Egyptian Courts And Their Implications, Barbara Viktoria Bishay

Theses and Dissertations

When President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized and unified the courts in 1956, he aimed at fostering unity and equality among the Egyptians. But this move has in fact achieved quite the opposite, as it forces Coptic Egyptians to sometimes choose between the freedom of practicing their religion and equality before the law, two basic human and civil rights that should be granted to all. By nationalizing the courts and yet still adhering to religious codes of personal status laws (PSL), legal dualism has not ceased to exist in Egypt and it is put into an ambivalent status between civil and …

Software Application For Computer Aided Vocabulary Learning In A Blended Learning Environment, Rasha Essam Hashem Hassan

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the effect of computer-aided vocabulary learning software called 'ArabCAVL on students' vocabulary acquisition. It was hypothesized that students who use the ArabCAVL software in blended learning environment will surpass students who use traditional vocabulary learning strategies in face-to-face learning environment even though both groups were using the same framework for introducing vocabulary. Pre-test and post-test were used for assessing the previously mentioned factors, while a questionnaire with open-ended questions was used to elicit students' attitudes toward using the software. Despite the fact that both the Nation (2001) framework and the ArabCAVL software showed a significant increase …

The Role Of The Hawza Of Najaf And Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani In Restructuring The Iraqi Governance System In Post-Baathist Iraq, Fadel Reda Ali Al-Kifaee

Theses and Dissertations

The role of the Shi'i religious establishment in the Iraqi transition since 2003 has been the subject of considerable research. To have clearer insight, the present research places this topic within the context of two critical frameworks: the doctrinal and structural aspect of the jurist's guardianship and the religious-political potentials of the conflict between the Iranian walayat al-faqih and Ayatollah al-Sistani's neo-quietist approach. In addition, it sheds light on al-Sistani's influence over three areas: the constitution-making process, rule of law, and the issue of having clerics running in elections. The analysis presented in this paper examines how this Ayatollah's views …

Theses and Dissertations

The increasing piracy in the Gulf of Aden has captured the attention of the international community. Somali pirates have proven their ability to attack all types of vessels from small yachts to giant oil supertankers. As a result, series of serious efforts by international community have been undertaken to put an end to this emerging phenomenon. These include, deploying the biggest anti-piracy fleet in modern history, permitting warships to purse pirates in Somali territorial waters under special conditions, and the new approach toward establishing international tribunals to prosecute pirates. However, there is a growing need to re-examine Somali piracy counter-measures …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will be exploring in depth the urban fabric of the area formerly known as Birkat al-Fil, or Elephant Pond, and its modern day transformation into areas such as Hilmiyya and Hilmiyya al-Jadida. Though the pond was eventually filled in the middle of the nineteenth century, the area will still be discussed in terms of its development within the modern era. I have defined the pre-twentieth century area of Birkat al-Fil by historical landmarks such as Bab al-Khalq to the north, the Mosque of Sultan Hasan to the east, and Sayyida Zaynab to the west. The pond area that …

Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1970s economic activities have become characterized by a combination of spatial dispersion and global integration, which as Sassen (1991) emphasized has created a new strategic role for major cities. Due to these changes, the â Global Cityâ , a term coined by Sassen, has emerged with certain political, economic and cultural characteristics that render it vital for the world economy. Cairo, a city with a long reputable history and acclaimed regional and continental status has been striving to acquire the â globalâ status. While there is controversy on whether Cairo has acquired this title or not, El Khishin …

Arabism And The Syrian Intelligentsia In Cairo: 1900-1918, Justin Hoyle Jun 2010

Arabism And The Syrian Intelligentsia In Cairo: 1900-1918, Justin Hoyle

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis examines the process by which the Syrian intelligentsia in Cairo catalyzed Cairo's transformation into an epicenter of the Arabist movement between 1900 and 1918. I will explore a combination of British diplomatic sources and Arabic-language publications in order to determine the role of the Syrian intelligentsia in Cairo in the burgeoning Arabist movement of the early twentieth century. In addition to contributing to our existing historical understanding of the development of Arabist ideology, this study will demonstrate the utility of analyzing centers of Arabism (in this case Cairo) that have often been neglected in contemporary nationalist historiography. Cairo …

Conceptualizing 'Chinese Diaspora': A Study Of Chinese Migrants In Cairo, Shannon Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

While China's recent increased presence and authority in Africa has been noted by national and international media, governments and academic sources, the issue of Chinese migrants living in the African continent and specifically Egypt has largely been left unnoticed. Despite the variance in population statistics, it is clear that Egypt does contain a population of Chinese migrants and that this population will undoubtedly grow as China's relationship with Egypt continues to flourish. Who are these migrants, and how do they relate to other populations of Chinese migrants residing across the world? Several terms have been used to describe this population …

Theses and Dissertations

The events of September 11, 2001 have had a profound impact on the world we live in today. Not only have they changed the perception of rights and freedoms in both the developed and developing worlds, but these events brought violent political Islamist movements from the fringes of international politics to the forefront of world politics. Suddenly movements that were once seen as an issue for the Muslim world became a concern for countries worldwide as they struggled to understand the causes behind the rise of Islamist violence and figure out ways to address it. By and large, Islamist movements, …

The Political Economy Of Violence: The Case Of Venezuela, Daniel Simon Leon Jun 2010

The Political Economy Of Violence: The Case Of Venezuela, Daniel Simon Leon

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will attempt to answer the question of how can the rise in social violence be explained in the oil-rich nation of Venezuela since the 1980s? The once relatively peaceful nation of Venezuela has seen a dramatic rise in social violence over the last three decades that has placed her amongst some of the world's most dangerous countries. A review of the relevant literature will reveal that the study of a social phenomenon such as violence, and in a nation such as Venezuela, is a complicated task because there are a number of different but in many cases interlinked …

Re-Imagining The Ns/Nns Dichotomy: Bicultural Teachers, Heba H. Fathelbab Jun 2010

Re-Imagining The Ns/Nns Dichotomy: Bicultural Teachers, Heba H. Fathelbab

Theses and Dissertations

EFL teachers have been categorized using the NS/NNS (native speaker/non-native speaker) dichotomy into NESTs (native English speaking teachers) and NNESTs (non-native English speaking teachers). However, this inaccurate dichotomy does not take into account other possible categories that may fall between these two extreme notions, and has shown to have several ramifications. First, students' perception of teacher nativeness may influence students' attitudes and learning (Sahin, 2005). In addition, this perception could have an effect on students' evaluations of their teachers (Al-Issa & Sulieman, 2007). Further, this biased dichotomy contributes to NNESTs' low self-confidence (Butler, 2007). Finally, it may cause unequal job …

The Development Of Fluency, Syntactic Complexity, And Grammatical Accuracy In Oral Presentations: A Case Of Egyptian Efl Learners, Mayada Mohammad Tawfik Zaki Jun 2010

The Development Of Fluency, Syntactic Complexity, And Grammatical Accuracy In Oral Presentations: A Case Of Egyptian Efl Learners, Mayada Mohammad Tawfik Zaki

Theses and Dissertations

Processing theories (Clahsen, 1984; Pienemann, 1997) have argued that the production of subordinate clauses is the last stage in the development of the second language learner. However, these theories did not refer to details about the development of accuracy and frequency of the production of subordinate clauses in second language learners' speech. They also did not investigate the relation between proficiency level and the production of complex syntax. Thus, more knowledge was required about the development of frequency and accuracy of complex syntax in EFL learners, and the relation between this development and proficiency level. Moreover, both second language and …
