The Culture Police: Manning The Barricades Of Allowable Art And Culture, Ramy Aly Jan 2021

The Culture Police: Manning The Barricades Of Allowable Art And Culture, Ramy Aly

Faculty Book Chapters

In this chapter I look at the history and ontology of censorship in Egypt from the Monarchical era to the present. I focus on the post-1952 era and how a tutelary state culture has been deployed as part of a broader cultural militarism. The chapter also covers the legislative architecture that has ensured a stranglehold on the part of syndicates and the creation of a broad range of crimes associated with art and culture production and exhibition.

Microwaving Dreams? Why There Is No Point In Reheating The Hart-Dworkin Debate For International Law, Jason A. Beckett Jan 2021

Microwaving Dreams? Why There Is No Point In Reheating The Hart-Dworkin Debate For International Law, Jason A. Beckett

Faculty Book Chapters

A critique of attempts to transpose Hart and Dworkin's legal theories to international law. I demonstrate why neither approach can provide insights into international law. Hart and Dworkin are institutional theorists, their methodologies are anchored by the need to justify the exercise of socially centralised violence. International law lacks both institutions and centralised violence, and the stabilising force these bring; it is radically indeterminate. Attempts to suppress this indeterminacy have resulted in international lawyers fragmenting into communities of practice, united by their eschatological faith in the international community. I challenge this faith.

Partnering For Egyptian Heritage Oral History: Internal And External Collaborations Pursued By The Archives, Stephen Urgola Jan 2020

Partnering For Egyptian Heritage Oral History: Internal And External Collaborations Pursued By The Archives, Stephen Urgola

Faculty Book Chapters

The story of Egypt and its people is a long one, written literally in stone at ancient monuments throughout the country. But perhaps the best way to tell the story of its contemporary period is through its inhabitants’ voices, by means of recorded oral history interviews. Oral history has become a major means of historical documentation for the Archives within the Rare Books and Special Collections Library of the American University in Cairo (AUC), one of the founding members of the AMICAL Consortium of American international liberal arts universities. A variety of collaborations and partnerships have enhanced the Archives’ efforts …

A Framework For Using Data Analytics To Measure Trust In Government Through The Social Capital Generated Over Governmental Social Media Platforms, Nahed Azab, Mohamed Elsherif

Faculty Book Chapters

© 2018 is held by the owner/author(s). It has been noted that citizens' trust in public institutions is continuously declining. Low social capital has been confirmed as one of the main reasons for this decrease in trust towards government. As social media offer a number of features that could foster social capital, governments worldwide are embracing these new tools in an attempt to restore citizens' trust. Having an existence on social media doesn't guarantee that it would increase trust; it can even compromise on the reputation of a public agency in the absence of a clear strategy targeted towards developing …

Egypt And The Middle East, Magda Shahin Mar 2018

Egypt And The Middle East, Magda Shahin

Faculty Book Chapters

In the early days of his presidency, Donald Trump has rolled out the red carpet for Arab leaders and reaffirmed the traditional U.S. privileging of alliances over human rights narratives, two decisions which radically differed from the Obama administration. Despite these developments, which regional leaders welcomed, Trump’s failure to articulate a comprehensive strategy to defeat ISIS and his preference for military might over diplomacy have caused concerns. While it is clear the U.S. has re-exerted itself in the Middle East, much of the Arab population (and their leaders) remain perplexed as to the Washington’s plans for the region. That Trump …

Moving Pictures: Context Of Use And Iconography Of Chariots In The New Kingdom, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.

Faculty Book Chapters

Chariots, the racing cars of the ancient world, first appeared in Egypt about 1600 BC, and quickly became not only the preferred mode of transport for royalty and the elite, but also revolutionised military tactics and warfare. Remains of chariots have been found in Egyptian tombs –Tutankhamun’s tomb contained six chariots, which tripled the number of ancient Egyptian chariots known before the discovery of his tomb. However, none of the chariots was complete, as all lacked their leather casings, which were only known from images on tomb and temple walls.

In 2008, the Ancient Egyptian Leatherwork Project (AELP) working in …

A Decade Of Advances In The Paleopathology Of The Ancient Egyptians, Lisa Sabbahy Dr. Jan 2015

A Decade Of Advances In The Paleopathology Of The Ancient Egyptians, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.

Faculty Book Chapters

Although the bioarchaeology (study of biological remains in an archaeological context) of Egypt has been documented in a desultory way for many decades, it is only recently that it has become an inherent part of excavations in Egypt. This volume consists of a series of essays that explore how ancient plant, animal, and human remains should be studied, and how, when they are integrated with texts, images, and artefacts, they can contribute to our understanding of the history, environment, and culture of ancient Egypt in a holistic manner.

Topics covered in this volume relating to human remains include analyses of …

Greening In Contemporary Arabic Literature: The Transformation Of Mythic Motifs In Postcolonial Discourse, Ferial J. Ghazoul Jan 2015

Greening In Contemporary Arabic Literature: The Transformation Of Mythic Motifs In Postcolonial Discourse, Ferial J. Ghazoul

Faculty Book Chapters

This chapter focuses on the motif of greening in contemporary Arabic literature by giving selected examples of how the motif carries with it a regenerative subtext and a critique of the present collapse of environmental health. The socioeconomic structure of the Arab World until recently has been based on rural village life and desert oases, with farming as a major source of livelihood, thus making green emblematic of growth and life-giving forces. There has been no shortage of works on the environment in recent years in Egypt and the Arab world as long as the question is social, political, or …

Novel Aluminum-Carbon Nanotubes Composites For Structural Applications, Amal M. K. Esawi, E. Salama, Y. Ibrahim Jan 2014

Novel Aluminum-Carbon Nanotubes Composites For Structural Applications, Amal M. K. Esawi, E. Salama, Y. Ibrahim

Faculty Book Chapters

The development of aluminum-carbon nanotubes (Al-CNT) composites has seen a surge in interest following promising results reported by various groups. The latest enhancements achieved by the research group: an increase in tensile strength and Young's modulus of 69% and 23% respectively for Al-CNT composites with 5 wt. % MWCNT were accompanied by a reduction in ductility expected to limit the applications of these novel composites. This is currently being addressed through the use of (1) dual matrix approach in which the CNTs are embedded in a first matrix of aluminum powders which are consequently embedded in a second matrix of …

Experimental Investigation On Shear Strength Of Elastic End-Web Panels Strengthened With Cfrp Strips, S. S. Safar, Mohamed N. Abou-Zeid Jan 2014

Experimental Investigation On Shear Strength Of Elastic End-Web Panels Strengthened With Cfrp Strips, S. S. Safar, Mohamed N. Abou-Zeid

Faculty Book Chapters

An experimental program was conducted to investigate the shear strength of elastic end-web panels of steel plate girders strengthened with intermediate-modulus carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, CFRP, strips. Test parameters included; number of strips, aspect ratio of end-web panel and width-to-thickness ratio of web plate. Twelve plate girder specimens composed of mild-steel were loaded in a four-point bending test till failure. The girders were proportioned so that the load capacity was governed by elastic web buckling. Four specimens were not strengthened to serve as reference girders whereas the remaining specimens were strengthened by applying CFRP strips in the diagonal tension direction on …

Development Of A Hybrid Solar Power Management Unit For Mobile Platforms, Ahmed A. Abdelmoaty, Amr Helmy, Yehea Ismail

Faculty Book Chapters

A hybrid power management unit was developed to interface photovoltaic energy to loads, and meeting its challenges such as variation of power, unregulated voltage and limited power, the unit implements a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to maximize the output power under environmental variations. The power management system proposed applies photovoltaic harvested energy effectively to mobile devices. It mainly consists of an MPPT block and a Power Distribution Control Unit (PDCU). Different cases of operation exist depending on the availability of power, load needs, and battery state of charge. Analysis and simulation results are provided to demonstrate system functionality and …

Seismic Retrofit Of Shear Critical Beam-Column Joints In Existing Concrete Buildings, Wael M. Hassan, A. A. Bilal Jan 2014

Seismic Retrofit Of Shear Critical Beam-Column Joints In Existing Concrete Buildings, Wael M. Hassan, A. A. Bilal

Faculty Book Chapters

Shear deficient beam-column joints in existing concrete buildings are believed to have caused partial or total structural collapses during past earthquakes. These joints primarily lack joint transverse reinforcement. A recent NEES grand challenge project resulted in detailed assessment tools for the seismic vulnerability of beam-column joints in existing buildings; however, retrofit strategies were not suggested. The literature body includes various retrofit solutions for interior and exterior joints. However, most of these solutions are either very expensive or highly invasive. The intent of retrofit is usually to have deficient joints to conform to ACI 352 to allow for flexural yielding in …

Le Gallienne’S Paraphrase And The Limits Of Translation, Adam Talib Jan 2013

Le Gallienne’S Paraphrase And The Limits Of Translation, Adam Talib

Faculty Book Chapters

This essay shows that Richard Le Gallienne’s 1897 edition of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is an original literary text and that it, along with other versions of the Rubáiyát published in the same period, was a response to FitzGerald’s wildly popular translation of a few decades earlier. Le Gallienne’s paraphrased versions of Persian poetry, Khayyam and later Hafez, are linked to his close involvement with the commercial publishing industry while his primary reliance in these paraphrases on academic translations highlights the parallel trend of scholarly reaction, often corrective, to FitzGerald’s edition. By examining how Le Gallienne composed his paraphrase …
