Learning To Be Trauma-Informed: An Examination Of Individual-Level Factors Predicting Perceptions Of And Response To Trauma-Informed Practice Trainings, Kelly Daniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trauma is a substantial threat to public health. As such, significant effort has been exerted into developing interventions which mitigate the consequences of trauma. Trauma-informed practice (TIP) aims to alleviate the effects of trauma by building policies and practices focused on safety, trust, transparency, support, collaboration, and empowerment. This study investigated how individual-level factors, including readiness for organizational change, perceived benefit of TIP training, and personal trauma history affect one’s ability to apply a TIP lens in a sample (n =100) of members of a graduate-level college. Further, it explored if one’s perceptions of and response to trauma-informed practice training …

Linking Human Resource Management Strategy To Organizational Performance: A Better Understanding Of High-Performance Work Practices In Higher Education, Laure Pou Dec 2024

Linking Human Resource Management Strategy To Organizational Performance: A Better Understanding Of High-Performance Work Practices In Higher Education, Laure Pou

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A model of Human Resource Management (HRM) was presented by Guest (1987) as a new approach to management of personnel matters in which HRM strategy informs HRM practices, and both result in beneficial Human Resources (HR) outcomes, such as employee engagement. The notion underlying this model is that strategic HRM and related practices influence behavioral outcomes that positively impact performance outcomes for an organization. However, research to date has been inconclusive regarding how HRM systems or specific HRM practices are contributing to organizational performance (Paauwe, 2009). The intent of this study was to further examine the relationship between HRM practices …

Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education

This paper explores teachers’ professional practices to gain a thorough grasp and a deep understanding of what it takes to retain learners in an environment where most schools fail to do so. I approach the study using a qualitative multiple case study design and position it within the interpretive paradigm. I purposively selected 50 post-level one teachers from five schools. Cavanagh and Dellar’s theory on culture of school improvement, which emphasizes the transformation of schools into learning communities through social interaction, interpersonal relationships, and support among various stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and learners, was used as theoretical lens for this …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected nurses working in many different settings. As they were frequently the last personnel left at the frontline during COVID-19, nurses’ experiences provide distinctive narratives in the alcohol and other drug treatment workforce. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses working in a substance abuse treatment setting have experienced significantly increased stressors, including fear and anxiety, the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), and a lack of workforce sustainability. Therefore, this generic qualitative study explored the perceptions and experiences of nurses working in a substance abuse treatment program on the barriers in their workforce that influence their turnover …

Applying A Tri-Learner Model Of Extension Collaboration: Local-State-Campus Partnership, Shannon Lipscomb, Barbara Bromley Brody, Megan Pratt, Toiresa Frazier

The Journal of Extension

The Tri-Learner model of Extension Collaboration offers an innovative approach to address community needs and advance research by convening faculty from academic research, statewide Extension, and community-embedded Extension. This article describes development of a new Tri-Learner Model through an early childhood resilience project, with data from 32 participants. We present four key factors for the model’s success: First, ensure that research and application are responsive to community needs rather than University-driven. Second, establish trusting, reciprocal relationships. Third, equally value each team member’s knowledge and skills. Finally, leverage collaborative University structures and/or funding to foster reciprocal partnerships to maximize research impacts.

The Integration Of The Indigenous Knowledge Holders Council Into A Post-Secondary Education Tri-Cameral Governance Institution, Heather Mccagg-Nystrom

The Dissertation in Practice at Western University

The 2015 release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) final report documented the historical impact of Canadian Indigenous residential schools through 94 Calls to Action requiring redress. Supporting post-secondary institution (PSI) educational reconciliation, Calls to Action #62 appeals to incorporate Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) knowledge, philosophies and approaches into the post-secondary system which has historically been built on a Western colonial worldview. An arctic Canadian PSI (referred to by the pseudonym Big River College, BRC) has made reconciliation an institutional priority, as it aligns with BRC strategic, academic, and equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) plans. Consequently, this …

The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Non-Profit’S Organizations Culture, Change, And Financial Stability, Joyce O. Hazzan, Afeez A. Hazzan, Elton Norman

Journal of Fundamental & Applied Business Research

Factors such as organizational culture, unplanned change, and financial instability can negatively affect organizations’ bottom line and competitiveness. Specifically, organizations that do not have a healthy culture, consistent decision-making process, and financial stability may be unable to compete in the marketplace during periods of economic uncertainties. Also, it is important to understand how these factors affect non-profit organizations since they are usually relied upon to perform critical roles during periods of crises. The recent COVID-19 pandemic represented an important shock for most non-profit organizations in the Unites States. As non-profit organizations change to accommodate these new realities, it is important …

A Wicked Leadership Approach To Democratizing Stem Education, Simone M. Le Gendre

The Dissertation in Practice at Western University

STEM Company Inc. (SC; a pseudonym) is an educational services company located in Canada. Over the past 4 years, the organization has worked on an international project portfolio that has reflected a niche area of education that is currently underserviced in the traditional and private educational landscape. SC’s clients have engaged in procuring curriculum, resources, and programming at the intersection of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). This focus has caused an organizational challenge as SC’s initial operational framework and business practices were broadly based on human capital development. My intersectional identity as the …

When E And G Disagree: Esg Scores Between Hedonic And Utilitarian Firms, Timothy Loomas Sep 2024

When E And G Disagree: Esg Scores Between Hedonic And Utilitarian Firms, Timothy Loomas

Executive DBA Dissertations

How do Environmental (E), Social (S), and Governance (G) scores vary when examined under a hedonic-utilitarian lens? The happiness and guilt associated with hedonic (pleasure oriented) products have been shown to increase altruism and prosocial behavior as compared to utilitarian (need oriented) products. Based on this we examine whether Social- and Environmental-pillar scores for firms associated with hedonic products and/or services will be greater than for firms associated with utilitarian products and/or services. To test these hypotheses, data from the Thompson-Refinitiv ESG database were used to compare the ESG pillar scores between hedonic and utilitarian firms. The research finds higher …

What Lessons Can Be Learned From The United Nations Preventive Deployment Mission In North Macedonia, On The Border Of Two Civilizations: Nothing Fails Like Success?, Mary Frances Lebamoff Sep 2024

What Lessons Can Be Learned From The United Nations Preventive Deployment Mission In North Macedonia, On The Border Of Two Civilizations: Nothing Fails Like Success?, Mary Frances Lebamoff

Comparative Civilizations Review

Preventive deployment as a conflict prevention tool has not recurred in the past several decades, despite the broadly acclaimed success of the United Nations Preventive Deployment in Macedonia, UNPREDEP 1995-1999, and of its predecessor missions, UNPROFOR/Macedonia, and UNPROFOR/M 1992-1995.

The United Nations in particular has continued with mainly first- and second-generation peacekeeping, peacemaking and peacebuilding actions even on civilizational borders. What may best explain why there has been no other engagement in preventive deployment missions? There has been much emphasis placed formally and informally on early warning, detection, mitigation, and prevention of conflict. There have also been increasing numbers of …

Growing Identity Over A Decade: Asl-English Interpreter Education, Kimberly Hale

International Journal of Interpreter Education

The employment context of ASL-English Interpretation programs (ASLIPs) has not been analyzed in a decade. In this study, I compared the institutional type and disciplinary category of 38 ASLIPs operating in 2011 and 57 programs operating in 2021 to determine whether there had been a standardization of academic profile. Over half of the programs in 2021 are in doctoral/research granting institutions (52.6%) compared to only 31.6% in 2011. While the number of programs classified under Schools/Colleges of Education has nearly doubled (11 and 20, respectively), the proportion has remained steady (45.8% and 45.5%, respectively). The proportion of language and/or culturally-related …

Feeding The Cats: The Corruption Conundrum In The Failed Arab Spring-Egypt, Mohamed 'Arafa

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The Egyptian civil society, across generational, religious, gender, and economic lines and without a charismatic leader, has organized itself at the grassroots level, evidencing the people's power in the face of a strong regime. Public order, security, and stability have deteriorated during the past two decades, with increased crime rates and other forms of abuses of power by individuals (e.g., thugs and small criminal bands), which the police have left somewhat unchecked. The people hold the military in high esteem because, in the last forty years, it has never acted against the general public. To prevent manipulation during the investigations …
