BioMedicine
Background: Dahlia (Dahlia variabilis), a widely cultivated ornamental plant in Indonesia, is known to contain 84.08% inulin in its tubers. Numerous studies have demonstrated the antidiabetic potential of inulin from various plant sources. However, most of the research is in the form of a mixture of inulin with other active substances, and no one has analyzed the effects of inulin derived from dahlia tubers. This study examines the effect of inulin from dahlia tuber extract on blood glucose levels, serum insulin expression, pancreatic tissue insulin expression, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and the extent of …

Using Manipulatives As Learning Interventions To Teach Introductory Chemistry Content In The Secondary Classroom And Beyond, John Kenneth Kennon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Use of manipulatives to explore concepts qualitatively and quantitatively was investigated in this study. Particle diagrams, enthalpy, VSEPR, and stoichiometry; four classes of students were divided into two groups constituting test group and control group. Control groups received traditional pedagogy (Lewis diagrams) while test groups used manipulatives. Shapiro-Wilks, class means, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney U tests, and item-by-item analyses were employed to quantify performance. Particle diagram results suggested that using modeling improves student learning outcomes based on means and Mann-Whitney U-test p-value. Enthalpy results indicated a larger mean for the test group than the control group, but no statistical difference between score …

Protein Residue Analysis In Archaeology: A Geological Contamination Experiment, Theresa Popp
Protein Residue Analysis In Archaeology: A Geological Contamination Experiment, Theresa Popp
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Protein residue analysis has been used by archaeologists for decades to explore ancient diets and hunting behaviors based on proteins deposited on tools and artifacts, however, protein contamination of buried artifacts has been assumed but lacked formal study. Through a contamination experiment testing different geological contexts (e.g. water movement and freeze-thaw), possible routes of protein contamination within soil were identified, adversely impacting protein residue analysis conducted on buried artifacts. Protein was found to move through soil in large enough concentrations to elicit positive protein residue results on sterile artifacts that never made direct contact with the protein source used in …

A Phytochemical Analysis Of Secondary Metabolites In Eupatorium Serotinum, Elise Snow
Theses and Dissertations
Phytochemistry, a subset of Natural Products Chemistry, studies chemically derived products from natural substances. Advances in this field have important applications in medicinal research due to the distinctive and unique properties of natural compounds. All metabolites are produced from the metabolic cycle, which is a pathway that provides energy for the organism. These metabolic compounds vary greatly and are classified based on their function within the organism. Primary metabolites are abundant and contribute to organism growth, development, and maintenance of energy. Secondary metabolites are found in lesser quantity and correlate to natural defense mechanisms. For example, salicylic acid is a …
Examining The Nexus Between Scientific Literacy And Identity In General Chemistry, Tiffany Chamberlain
Examining The Nexus Between Scientific Literacy And Identity In General Chemistry, Tiffany Chamberlain
WWU Graduate School Collection
Scientific literacy is a crucial goal of science education. All citizens need scientific understanding to make rational and informed decisions, and to feel confident in making such decisions. Many students harbor doubts about belonging in science and their identities as science persons. As such, science educators are tasked with helping students develop these skills as they engage in various courses. College instructors incorporate scientific literacy skills as part of their courses in which students are encouraged to develop a science person identity (i.e. science identity) through science identity work. Therefore, learning can be seen as a process of identity …

Comparison Of Metal-Carbenoid Reactions Of Β-2-Five-Membered Heteroaryl Substituted Α,Β-Unsaturated Ketones, Kumsal Eroğlu, Olcay Anaç, Füsun Şeyma Kişkan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this study, β-2-heteroaryl substituted (N-methyl 2-pyrrolyl, 2-thiophenyl, 2-furyl) α,β-unsaturated ketones were reacted with two α-diazo carbonyl compounds that had different characteristics (dimethyl diazo malonate and 1-diazo-1-phenyl-propane-2-one) in the presence of both copper and rhodium catalysts. In the case of reactions with N-methyl 2-pyrrolyl α,β-unsaturated ketones, the major product was the insertion derivative. However, in the reactions of 2-thiophenyl and 2-furyl α,β-unsaturated ketones with dimethyl diazomalonate (acceptor-acceptor disubstituted), only dihydrofuran products were formed over carbonyl ylides. When 2-thiophenyl and 2-furyl α,β-unsaturated ketones were reacted with 1-diazo-1-phenyl-propane-2-one (donor-acceptor disubstituted), 1-phenylpropane-1,2-dione was obtained under our reaction conditions.

“Increasing Renewable Energy Potential Of Landfill Gas By Electrocatalytic Conversion Of Carbon Dioxide To Methane At Low Temperature.”, Asma Akter Rony
Civil Engineering Dissertations
The conversion of carbon dioxide into methane at a low temperature has great potential to reduce current international environmental issues like global warming and will create new sources of renewable energy. The overall goal of this research is to increase renewable energy production from landfill gas using an unconventional process – electrocatalytic methanation of carbon dioxide – which has not been implemented for landfill gas yet. The electrocatalytic methanation follows the Waseda process, which applies an electric field in the presence of a Ruthenium-supported cerium oxide (CeO2) catalyst. The specific objectives of this research were: 1. To explore the impact …
On The Origins Of Life — Modelling The Initial Stages Of Complex Coacervate Droplet Formation, Yixuan Wu
On The Origins Of Life — Modelling The Initial Stages Of Complex Coacervate Droplet Formation, Yixuan Wu
Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)
Coacervate droplets are considered a plausible model for protocells due to their spontaneous formation and ability to compartmentalize macromolecules such as nucleic acid and peptides. Although experimental studies have observed and synthesized coacervates under different laboratory conditions, little is known about their structure. Here we present atomistic molecular dynamic simulations of the interactions between water and oppositely charged proteins that cluster together in a salt-dependent process. Observing such liquid-liquid phase separation on an atomic level would serve as a model for the initial stages of complex coacervate formation. Molecular Dynamics was used to compute diagnostics of the structure at different …

A Computational Kinetics Model To Quantify Radiation Induced Chemical Products Of Atmospheric Gas Mixtures, Patrick Ables
A Computational Kinetics Model To Quantify Radiation Induced Chemical Products Of Atmospheric Gas Mixtures, Patrick Ables
Dissertations
This research is focused on the development of a computational model which will calculate the effects of radiation on the chemical composition of the atmosphere. The approach utilizes the open-source chemical kinetics toolkit Cantera to model the creation of radiation-induced reactant species within irradiated air mixtures. Chemical solutions are iteratively stepped toward chemical equilibrium within a ‘constantly stirred’ (homogeneous) reactor of fixed volume. Three different radiation chemistry models are implemented in several different pulsed and continuous radiation schemes. The first model includes the mechanisms and rates of a pulse radiation model from the literature to test the validity of the …

Catecholamine-stimulated β2-adrenergic receptor (β2AR) signaling via the canonical Gs–adenylyl cyclase–cAMP–PKA pathway regulates numerous physiological functions, including the therapeutic effects of exogenous β-agonists in the treatment of airway disease. β2AR signaling is tightly regulated by GRKs and β-arrestins, which together promote β2AR desensitization and internalization as well as downstream signaling, often antithetical to the canonical pathway. Thus, the ability to bias β2AR signaling toward the Gs pathway while avoiding β-arrestin-mediated effects may provide a strategy to improve the functional consequences of β2AR activation. Since attempts to develop Gs-biased agonists and allosteric modulators for the β2AR have been largely unsuccessful, here we …

One of the main sources of uncertainty for understanding global warming is understanding the formation of larger secondary aerosols. The beginning stages start with the formation of prenucleation complexes from precursor monomers of acids, bases, and organic molecules. The detailed interactions responsible for prenucleation and subsequent aerosol formation are difficult to decipher experimentally. We present a computational chemistry study of the interactions between three different acid molecules and two different bases. By combining a comprehensive search routine covering many thousands of configurations at the semiempirical level with high level quantum chemical calculations of approximately 1000 clusters for every possible combination …

New Methods Of Selectivity Using Electrochemistry, Qiwei Jing
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project has been working on introducing new type of method to induce chemoselectivity into electrochemical reactions by modifying the surface of an electrode and then confining chemical reactions to the region of the reaction close to that surface. The goal is to translate the extremely high levels of site-selectivity seen in chemical reactions on a microelectrode array into a tool for preparative synthetic reactions. As a proof-of-principle experiment, Pt-anode was coated with a diblock copolymer that is known to have an affinity for pyrene groups. The electrode is then used in the oxidation of two alcohol substrates: one having the …
Scanning Probe Microscopy Studies Of Petroleum Chemistry: Substrate-Dependent Catalytic Properties Of Mos2 And Automating Scanning Probe Microscopy With Machine Learning, Steven Arias
Doctoral Dissertations
With the growth of the population, society’s energy demands are mostly reliant on petroleum products that come from the refining of crude oil. Most of these refining reactions have been developed through averaging spectroscopic techniques, but scientists do not know exactly what is happening in these processes at the nano and atomic levels. This information is crucial when designing an efficient refining process that produces petroleum products that emit fewer harmful gases when combusting. Scanning probe microscopy techniques have become a powerful tool to look into the chemical structures found in petroleum products, to understand catalytic reactions in refining processes, …
