The Social Contract And Feminism, Grace A. Albertson
The Social Contract And Feminism, Grace A. Albertson
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
This paper seeks to prove the value placed on women in society, and disprove the claim that the social contract is inherently patriarchal. Radical feminists claim that society as a whole is irreparably flawed and operates patriarchally. Therefore, they call for a systematic shift and condemn the current fabric of our society and nation. The social contract, an idea centered around the philosophical works of John Locke and Thomas Hobbes served as the primary way that the founders of the United States justified the formation of American democracy and had immense influence on American political thought. However, feminists seek to …
Burdin, Johannah, Samantha Rouillard
Burdin, Johannah, Samantha Rouillard
Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection
Johannah Burdin shares her story as a lesbian/queer woman experiencing southern Maine in the 1990s. Her story touches on topics involving coming out, relationships, a traumatic incident that left her disabled, activism, and much more. She was active in her youth in spreading awareness on the AIDS/HIV crisis, education on safe sex, and spent her evenings at popular Portland gay bars, like Sister’s Bar and Limelight/The Underground. Although she is not much into drinking, she recognized these were some of the few spots queer people could go to make community and relationships. Johannah also shares her story of becoming a …

Title Ix In Historical Context: 50 Years Of Progress And Political Gamesmanship, Helen Drew, Marissa Egloff, Josie Middione
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
On the fiftieth anniversary of Title IX, it is important to recognize both its historic nature and how it has evolved in political and social context. This Article will begin by examining the history of women’s athletics pre–Title IX, focusing on what activities women participated in, why, and how societal norms shaped their ability to do so. Next, the Article will examine the status of women’s athletic opportunities as Title IX was first proposed, with an emphasis upon its nexus to the women’s rights movement and the Equal Rights Amendment initiative. The Article will then provide historical background for key …
Accelerating The Gains Of The Free Maternity Care In Kenya's Urban Informal Settlements, Juliet K. Nyamao
Accelerating The Gains Of The Free Maternity Care In Kenya's Urban Informal Settlements, Juliet K. Nyamao
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
The 2010 Constitution of Kenya recognizes the special group of women living in urban informal settlements, and provides for their access to the highest attainable standards of health care, including reproductive health care. The Health Act, which was enacted in 2017, recognizes the significant challenges of accessing maternal health services among the poorest populations. Pursuant to the resolutions of the African Union, the Health Act abolished user fees for pregnant women. The Health Act instructs the county and national governments to expand free maternity care and childhood immunizations through funding. Despite Kenya’s commitment to increase the national budget for health …
The Jurisprudence Of The First Woman Judge, Florence Allen: Challenging The Myth Of Women Judging Differently, Tracy A. Thomas
The Jurisprudence Of The First Woman Judge, Florence Allen: Challenging The Myth Of Women Judging Differently, Tracy A. Thomas
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
This Article delves into the life and work of Judge [Florence] Allen to provide insight to the contributions and jurisprudence of the first woman judge. For history questions what difference putting a woman on the bench might have made. Part I explores Allen’s early influences on her intellectual development grounded in her progressive and politically active family, and her close network of female professional friends. Part II discusses her pivotal work with the women’s suffrage movement, working with the national organizations in New York and leading the legal and political efforts in Ohio. This proactive commitment to gender justice, however, …
Legal Pluralism Across The Global South: Colonial Origins And Contemporary Consequences, Brian Z. Tamanaha
Legal Pluralism Across The Global South: Colonial Origins And Contemporary Consequences, Brian Z. Tamanaha
Scholarship@WashULaw
This essay conveys past and present legally plural situations across the Global South, highlighting critical issues. It provides readers with a deep sense of legal pluralism and an appreciation of its complexity and the consequences that follow. A brief overview of colonization sets the stage, followed by an extended discussion of colonial indirect rule, which formed the basis for political and legal pluralism. Thereafter, showing the continuity from past to present, I discuss the transformation-invention of customary law, socially embedded village tribunals, enhancement of the power of traditional elites, uncertainty and conflict over land, clashes between customary and religious law …
The Lavender Scare: How Fear And Prejudice Impacted A Nation In Crisis, Erin Owens
The Lavender Scare: How Fear And Prejudice Impacted A Nation In Crisis, Erin Owens
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The Cold War time period was marked by fear and uncertainty. This was reflected by the treatment towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals in the political and social spheres, known as the Lavender Scare. Policies such as Executive Order 10450 (1953) and the 1947 Sex Perversion Elimination Act prevented LGBTQ+ individuals from gaining meaningful employment and further complicated social stigma of gayness. The policies were primarily enacted to use queer individuals as scapegoats for the panic of the time and conflated the perceived moral corruption of Communists with the perceived moral corruption of LGBTQ+ individuals. The policies …
The Revival Of The Handmaid’S Tale: Empowering Women’S Rights In The Twenty-First Century, Bassmah B. Altaher
The Revival Of The Handmaid’S Tale: Empowering Women’S Rights In The Twenty-First Century, Bassmah B. Altaher
Journal of International Women's Studies
Feminists fought for the sake of justice and equality, paving the way for so many women to believe in their inner strength and ability to create change, but with the turn of the twenty-first century, many women who are victims of rape and sexual harassment still prefer to remain silent. The only possible way to move on and heal is to seek one’s truth, yet the voices of the victims are overlooked in the face of extreme oppressive patriarchal societies. The entertainment industry and social media are two powerful tools women can use to make their voices heard, and celebrities …
