Autumn Grass Growth- The Effect Of Rest Interval, R Neilan, E G. O'Riordan, G Keane
Autumn Grass Growth- The Effect Of Rest Interval, R Neilan, E G. O'Riordan, G Keane
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The effect of closing dates (Experiment 1: August 1, August 14 and September 18) and grass regrowth interval (Experiment 2) on herbage yield in the autumn/winter and in the following spring were investigated on a previously grazed Lolium perenne sward. In Experiment 1, similar yields were obtained for the August 1 and August 14 closing. Yields decreased and the proportion of dead material increased from 0.19 to 0.61 between mid-October and late- December. In Experiment 2, dry matter yield increased linearly (P < 0.05) with rest interval up to 7 wks in swards closed in September. There was no significant yield advantage for rest intervals greater than 5-6 wks. It is concluded that accumulated autumn and spring yields showed increased DM production with the shorter regrowth intervals.
The Effect Of Turnout Date To Pasture In Spring And Grazing Strategy On The Performance Of Spring-Calving Dairy Cows In Wet Land Enviornment, J Maher, S Crosse, M Rath
The Effect Of Turnout Date To Pasture In Spring And Grazing Strategy On The Performance Of Spring-Calving Dairy Cows In Wet Land Enviornment, J Maher, S Crosse, M Rath
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The objective was to investigate the effect of earlier turnout to pasture in spring on animal performance in a wet land environment. Fiftysix spring-calving dairy cows were randomly allocated to four treatments and the stocking rate for each treatment was 2.47 cows/ ha. Cows in three of these treatments commenced grazing in mid- March. The cows on Treatment A grazed 100% of the farm and received 3 kg/day of concentrate. Cows on Treatment B and C grazed 50% of the farm (area designated for silage production), received silage at night, indoors, and 6 kg/day and 3 kg/day of concentrate respectively. …

Sim Racing Pedal Assembly, Ben Wold, Owen Clobes, Angel Perales, Mike Mcmasters
Mechanical Engineering
At an increasing rate, professional and amateur race car drivers are utilizing simulated racing as a training aid and even a substitute for real-life car racing. The team’s objective in this project was to create a sim racing pedal assembly aimed at filling this gap in the industry, aided by Justin Jang of Data Driven Racing LLC. The project resulted in a fully operational throttle and brake pedal which incorporated dual spring brake pedal resistance system and radial displacement sensor in the throttle. By collecting real race car data and selecting and testing spring setups based on this real data, …

The Edwards and Edwards-Trinity Aquifers of Texas have diverse stygofauna, including fifteen species of snails found in phreatic and hyporheic habitats. These species have the hallmarks of adaptation to subterranean environments including extremely small body size and the loss of pigmentation and eyes. Here we use an integrative taxonomic approach, using shell, radula, and anatomical features as well as mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data, to circumscribe a new genus and two new cavesnail species from Central Texas. Vitropyrgus lillianae gen. et sp. nov. is described from Comal Springs (Comal County) and Fessenden Springs (Kerr County) and distinguished by a glassy, …

Crop growth models can be valuable tools for researchers, academia, extension educators, and policy makers/planners for the evaluation of sustainable and long-term husbandry practices. Determining the optimum sowing window, which can be determined using crop growth models, is imperative under changing climate conditions. Thus, the main objectives herein were to 1) assess the performance of the cropping system model-crop environment resource synthesis-maize model for hybrids and sowing dates in the spring and autumn, and 2) determine the optimum sowing window in 15 districts of Punjab, Pakistan. In the spring experiment, 3 hybrids (P-33M15, M-DK6525, and S-NK8441) were planted in the …

Predictive Modeling Of Cave Entrance Locations: Relationships Between Surface And Subsurface Morphology, William Blitch, Adia R. Sovie, Benjamin Tobin
Faculty, Staff, and Affiliated Publications--KGS
Cave entrances directly connect the surface and subsurface geomorphology in karst landscapes. Understanding the spatial distribution of these features can help identify areas on the landscape that are critical to flow in the karst groundwater system. Sinkholes and springs are major locations of inflow and outflow from the groundwater system, respectively, however not all sinkholes and springs are equally connected to the main conduit system.
Predicting where on the landscape zones of high connectivity exist is a challenge because cave entrances are difficult to detect and imperfectly documented. Wildlife research has a similar issue of understanding the complexities of where …

Predicting Groundwater Spring Locations From Topographic And Climatic Data Using Maxent Modeling, Ayten Ece Koc
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The World Resources Institute reveals that 17 countries face extremely high levels of water stress. Moreover, with increasing population and industrialization, the gap between water supply and demand increases day by day around the world. Groundwater is a key freshwater source, and springs are important resources as they enable to access groundwater. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor, protect, and manage groundwater springs. The first step in spring management is to recognize and define freshwater resources and to determine the locations of groundwater springs that serve as natural discharge points. Traditionally, field studies have been employed to determine the locations …

Inspiration is a strange beast. Where does it come from? Often when I hear someone sing a song, I am inspired by it and want to learn it. It speaks to me somehow. Just as often, though, I’ll look through a book and find something that looks glorious that I want to try. Other times inspiration comes from a conversation, a joke, or some other shared experience. This program is inspired by our shared experiences with the love of God. Fanny Crosby, blind since six-weeks old, perhaps saw the “visions of rapture” of God’s presence better than any of the …

A Return To The Staging Grounds: Reassessment Of Aleutian Cackling Goose Spring Distribution In North Humboldt Bay, Shaun W. Thornton
A Return To The Staging Grounds: Reassessment Of Aleutian Cackling Goose Spring Distribution In North Humboldt Bay, Shaun W. Thornton
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
After a 15-year interval in research, spatial and temporal patterns of the Aleutian cackling goose during spring staging was assessed again in 2022. During my study, 3,389 goose flocks were recorded in Arcata Bottoms staging site, 1 January to 21 April 2022, amounting to an estimated total of 2,248,512 goosedays, which was 336.8% higher than 2007 estimates of 667,485 goosedays. Geese continued to use pastures with a wide range of landscape characteristics primarily represented by livestock grazing practices. Goose use was greater than availability on beef-cattle fields early in the season and dairy-cow fields later in the season. Human disturbances …
