Some novice researchers that are learning the Scientific Descriptive Phenomenological method of research could use a succinct aid to guide their learning. I composed Table 1. below so that beginners might see the connections between the Husserlian Phenomenological concepts and the 5-step* method developed by Amedeo P. Giorgi (1985; 2009). Challenging students to create digital documentary films in history courses engages students in both mastery of content knowledge and higher order thinking experiences. Teachers considering this type of work must contend with the focus on standards- based testing, a wide breadth of content to be covered, the challenge of finding relevant primary source materials, and restrictions related to copyright and Fair Use. In 2017, a joint international effort commenced under the direction of the President of University for Business and Technology (UBT) in Kosovo with colleagues from Linnaeus University (Sweden) and University for the Pacific (USA) to define, create and populate a Knowledge Center for UBT which would include an institutional repository (IR). Enlivened by discussion and feedback from the intended recipients, the needs and goals of a UBT IR were identified. Many companies slow in adopting modern enterprise systems are catching up. An important agenda of CIOs of these latecomer companies is to redeploy slack resources into productive use. IS research, however, has not previously studied how to use IT to redeploy slack resources. Based on an in-depth case study of the digital transformation completed by a latecomer - XCMG, the largest construction machinery manufacturer in China - we derive a four-phase process model of IT-enabled slack redeployment and provide six recommendations for CIOs. Participation in research and scholarly activity is critical to successful medical student and resident matriculation and to faculty development. Both Marshall University and West Virginia University sponsor yearly peer-reviewed School of Medicine Research Days’ to support these missions. This article evaluates the successful publication of Research Day presentations for West Virginia’s Allopathic Medical Schools. Both Marshall University (MU) and West Virginia University’s (WVU) School of Medicine use a competitive review process for abstract selection ensuring high quality research is presented. Over a 10-year period, MU published 12% (74/616) of its abstracts while WVU published 22% (265/1185) of its abstracts. We …

Objective. To assess the impact of a graduate student mentoring program on student interest in research and postgraduate education and on graduate student confidence in mentoring. Methods. Undergraduate and pharmacy students (mentees) and graduate students (mentors) were matched and participated in the study, which required them to engage in at least 2 discussions regarding research and careers. Mentees completed a pre- and post-assessment of their perceptions of research, postgraduate training plans, and perceptions about mentors. In professional disciplines like social work, students are expected to be able to understand and apply basic statistical concepts. Graduate programs differ in how they expect students to develop this ability; some require a full-credit statistics course as a prerequisite to admission, and others incorporate statistics into social work research courses. The for-credit requirement has a high financial and time cost for students. This exploratory study examined the feasibility of replacing this requirement with a brief, non-credit statistics course. MSW students (n=168) who took both types of courses were surveyed. No association was found between the type of course and …

This report describes the research needs and practices of nine Asian Studies scholars at Trinity University, a private liberal arts college in San Antonio, Texas. Part of a nationwide study coordinated by Ithaka S+R, the report describes scholars’ 1 methods, information needs, and publication practices in order to better align and deliver research support from academic departments, librarians, university administrators, and other stakeholders. The report culminates in predictions on the future of the field, and offers several recommendations to help scholars achieve the future they envision for Asian Studies.

All human subjects’ research involves an informed consent process, during which potential participants learn about research procedures, possible risks of being in the research study, and then decide if they would like to participate in the study. This information is usually communicated in written or spoken English, rather than translated into ASL, making the process inaccessible to the Deaf community. Training pre-service teachers requires, among other things, content knowledge, pedagogical skills and pedagogical content knowledge. Teacher preparation programs have little, if any spare time to add more courses/activities to their program. However, I argue in this paper that we, as educators, must enhance the amount of physics education research in our pre-service physics teacher training programs. In this study, I analyze the results of two different types of exposure to physics education research (PER) from two different groups of pre-service physics teachers in our masters of arts and teaching program. This article details the outcomes of the ‘National Learning and Teaching Resource Audit and Classification’ project, commissioned by the Australian Government’s Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT). The project used a range of methodologies to reorganise the OLT’s Resource Library (http://www.olt.gov.au/resource-library), constructing and selecting an optimal set of metadata elements, along with certain vocabularies for these elements, and then reindexing the content of the Resource Library utilising the new schema and vocabularies. This paper reports on a before-and-after evaluation of the Resource Library’s search performance through an information retrieval experiment based on searches logged by the repository’s content management system. …

In order to effectively access and utilize the resources of the academic library and to become information literate, students must understand the language of information literacy. This study analyzes undergraduate students’ understanding of fourteen commonly used information literacy terms. It was found that some of the terms least understood by students are those most frequently found in faculty-created research assignments and syllabi and which are used by librarians during library instruction. It is recommended that librarians work with faculty to make them aware of students’ lack of understanding of information literacy terms and that librarians also reinforce their meaning during …
