Exploring The Design Applications Of Key Emerging Materials From Natural Sciences Through A Design Ideation Workshop, Muhammad Tufail, Xinyi Wang, Aichu Tian, Xinye Li, Sai Yin Leung, Sahr Uzma, Hyunyim Park, Kwanmyung Kim
IASDR Conference Series
The design direction is shifting towards new design landscapes with alive and adaptive aesthetic features and functions and confronting natural alternative designs. Designers, architects, and artists have proposed the exploration of emerging materials by exploiting synthetic biology, bionics, chemical technology, and material science to create new design alternatives with natural aesthetic features and functions. In practice, however, designers are not properly familiar with the potential applications of these emerging materials and their alive and adaptive aesthetic and functional features in product design. Thus, particularly in traditional product design development, the applications of these materials are untouched resulting from three hindering …

Resource Use And Water Implications Of Material Consumption In Consumer Electronics, Hema Madaka
Resource Use And Water Implications Of Material Consumption In Consumer Electronics, Hema Madaka
Theses
Rapid technological innovation has introduced a broad spectrum of materials in the consumer electronics sector. Consumption of these materials increases the demand for water and potentially discharge contaminants into the water resources across their life cycle, exacerbating freshwater scarcity and pollution. These water impacts have not yet been fully studied, as most literature on consumer electronics focuses on supply chain energy, carbon footprint, or end of life management. Evaluating water impacts requires data on material content, life cycle water consumption and emissions at spatial level, and availability of impact assessment models that connects life cycle data to water impacts. Data …

Cleaning golf clubs can be a tedious process, however a necessary one to maintain equipment. Clubs are normally cleaned by filling a bucket with soap and water, soaking all the clubs to be cleaned, then scrubbing each one individually. An automatic club cleaner would make this process much easier and more enjoyable. Using electric motors, the club cleaner would have spinning brushes in soap and water to quickly and easily clean the club head. The machine would have different sections for cleaning the club head, polishing the club face, and cleaning the grip. The cleaner should be inexpensive and easy …
The Measurement Of Product Typicality In Design Research. A Basic And Applied Approach, Travis Kent
The Measurement Of Product Typicality In Design Research. A Basic And Applied Approach, Travis Kent
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
The objective of this study was to examine the use of the cognitive construct of “typicality” to guide design decisions in the development of consumer products. Increasing products that will appeal to consumers, designers strive to balance novelty and familiarity. A potential way to thread this needle is to understand how “typical” a design is of its particular product category. The construct of typicality has been used by psychologists to understand how people create and represent categories. Objects that are more typical of a category are often associated with positive responses from observes (e.g., greater visual appeal, faster recognition). In …

Perceived Value Of Technology Product Features By Crowdfunding Backers: The Case Of 3d Printing Technology On Kickstarter Platform, Nina Chaichi
Dissertations and Theses
Crowdfunding is an activity that gathers funds by drawing on a relatively small contribution from a relatively large number of individuals using the internet. One of the crowdfunding purposes is to fund entrepreneurial ventures. Modern crowdfunding activities--that utilize the internet--go back to 1997 and gained popularity in the music and video community. However, the most common platforms for entrepreneurial activities, including Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, have been established as recently as 2008. Thus the understanding of crowdfunding's dynamic is in its infancy.
Crowdfunding has been studied from various perspectives, primarily focusing on the factors that increase the platform's participation and determinants …

Uncertainty Wanted: Deconstructing Gender Gap In Parenting Mentality, Zimeng Xiang
Masters Theses
Gender stereotypes propagate through generations like a loop without a clear start or end, constantly reinforcing and being reinforced by the constructed, gendered system of information around us. For this project, I take the start of parenthood - the moment when new parents begin to learn everything about newborn care - as a critical point to encourage gender-neutral parenthood and eventually, to fill the gender gap in parents’ mental load.
