Creating An Interactive Classroom: Enhancing Student Engagement And Learning In Political Science Courses, Jonathan D. Mott, Danny Damron Jul 2005

Creating An Interactive Classroom: Enhancing Student Engagement And Learning In Political Science Courses, Jonathan D. Mott, Danny Damron

Faculty Publications

Students of the pedagogy of teaching have found that cooperative/problem-based learning activities engage the learner, promote ownership of the material, advance the development of higher-level cognitive skills and increase retention better than more passive learning activities. Despite broad recognition within the political science discipline that classroom activities can and should facilitate better student learning outcomes, political science classes (both large and small) frequently have characteristics that make cooperative/problem-based learning activities more difficult to employ and less likely to succeed. Anonymity in large sections, a steep learning curve of complex concepts, and students who see passivity as the least costly approach …

Exploring Table Talk: Does Dialogue Or Debate Correspond To Success And Satisfaction In Teacher Collective Bargaining?, Michael R. Jette Jan 2005

Exploring Table Talk: Does Dialogue Or Debate Correspond To Success And Satisfaction In Teacher Collective Bargaining?, Michael R. Jette

Doctoral Dissertations

The purposes of this study were: (1) to see if there is a difference in the way representatives from labor and management report the use of dialogue and debate while sitting together around the teacher contract bargaining table, and (2) to determine if individuals who approach the table and engage in dialogue have a greater satisfaction with bargaining than those who engage in debate. The research survey collected background information about the negotiators, the outcome of their bargaining, and their perceptions of success. It also contained 19 diametrically opposed statements related to dialogue or debate, and respondents used a Likert-type …

Canada's Official Development Assistance For News Media And Journalism Promotion In The Developing World: Uncertain Objectives And Inconsistent Outcomes., Blake Cameron Roberts Jan 2005

Canada's Official Development Assistance For News Media And Journalism Promotion In The Developing World: Uncertain Objectives And Inconsistent Outcomes., Blake Cameron Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The prevailing assumption among Western governments is that a free and independent news media is a key to political transition in the developing world. Consequently, media assistance interventions are components of all Western states' democratization, good governance and civil society promotion strategies. It is not clear, however, that Western support for the news media has a lasting effect on the political transition of the developing world. There are strong militating factors that hinder the establishment of a free and independent media sector in most developing states. This study examines specific aspects of Canada's media assistance strategy and engages in a …

The Islamic Economic Option (Ieo) And The Challenge Of Faith To The New World Order., Crystal A. Ennis Jan 2005

The Islamic Economic Option (Ieo) And The Challenge Of Faith To The New World Order., Crystal A. Ennis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Islam is an ever-present reality in the political, economic and social life throughout the Arab-Islamic world. In this region, there exists a pervasive notion that Islam should be an integral part of all economic and political aspects of the state. At present, many nations across the Arab-Islamic world face political and economic instability and uncertainty. Since the legitimacy of many regimes in the region is consistently called into question, and since Islamic movements and political parties often form the strongest opposition, the emergence of an Islamic government is a strong possibility. Overall, the purpose of this thesis is to examine …

Elicited Priors For Bayesian Model Specifications In Political Science Research, Jeff Gill, Lee D. Walker Jan 2005

Elicited Priors For Bayesian Model Specifications In Political Science Research, Jeff Gill, Lee D. Walker

Faculty Publications

We explain how to use elicited priors in Bayesian political science research. These are a form of prior information produced by previous knowledge from structured interviews with subjective area experts who have little or no concern for the statistical aspects of the project. The purpose is to introduce qualitative and area-specific information into an empirical model in a systematic and organized manner in order to produce parsimonious yet realistic implications. Currently, there is no work in political science that articulates elicited priors in a Bayesian specification. We demonstrate the value of the approach by applying elicited priors to a problem …

Lesotho And The World Bank: An Exercise In Coordination And Implementation., Tichaona Kuruneri Jan 2005

Lesotho And The World Bank: An Exercise In Coordination And Implementation., Tichaona Kuruneri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the World Bank rather than the International Monetary Fund (IMF) because the Bank is the driving force of development in Africa. Although the Bank is a major actor in the socio-economic landscape of southern Africa (Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Lesotho), there have been few qualitative studies done, examining the Banks effectiveness in Lesotho. The following questions will guide my research analysis with regards to the Bank and the developmental relationship it has with Lesotho. My research questions are: has the Bank been effective in fulfilling its stated health care developmental …

Canadian Democracy Promotion Strategies: Success And/Or Failure?, Mary T. Pardi Jan 2005

Canadian Democracy Promotion Strategies: Success And/Or Failure?, Mary T. Pardi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Canadian International Development Agency plays an integral role in the promoting of democracy abroad. In fact, CIDA has spent more than $1 billion in meaningful democratic aid since 1990 on both multilateral and bilateral programmes. Despite this, CIDA policies are not conducive to developing effective and quality projects in recipient nations, due to the secretive nature of the institution. This study examines the organization's "Democracy Project Database," which contains the listing of all democracy projects for all nations from 1990-2005. Additionally, it evaluates the availability of reports and conducts interviews with CIDA personnel. Various CIDA human rights and democracy …

Scoring The Charter: A Twenty-Year Analysis Of Supreme Court Voting Trends (Pierre Trudeau)., Jason A. Daigle Jan 2005

Scoring The Charter: A Twenty-Year Analysis Of Supreme Court Voting Trends (Pierre Trudeau)., Jason A. Daigle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Charter has transformed the way the policy process is conducted in Canada. It has ushered in a revolution focused on individual and collective group rights. The entrenchment of codified rights and freedoms has forced the legislatures to conform to the contents within the Charter and has reshaped Canadian socio-political values. Various studies have attempted to explain the Charters role in this process, however the question left unanswered is how has the Charter reshaped the policy process and what is the impact to Canadian constitutionalism? This thesis seeks to answer this question through a detailed quantitative analysis. The body of …

Women Rule: An Alternative Voice On The Supreme Court Of Canada, Chelsea Gabel Jan 2005

Women Rule: An Alternative Voice On The Supreme Court Of Canada, Chelsea Gabel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various studies have researched the relative involvement of elected women versus elected men in issues that are generally considered to be of primary interest to women at the legislative level. However, there is only a small body of research in the area of political science on gender and the judiciary, specifically with regard to Canada. The small number of female justices is a limiting factor, but the presence of women in the judiciary offers an important opportunity for academic study. To achieve effective results in this study, case law of the Supreme Court of Canada from the period of 1982-2003 …

Millennialism And Violence., Herbert Simms Jan 2005

Millennialism And Violence., Herbert Simms

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Religious and secular millenarianism have had a significant impact on the development of many different polities. In both its forms, millenarianism has both positive and negative impacts. It can provide a community with a strong motivation to work together while it promotes group cohesion, and serves as a mechanism of community development. At the same time, it can develop into authoritarianism and totalitarianism. This thesis examines millenarian belief structures' impact on politics and asks several questions. What impact has millenarian belief structures had on the development of the American political culture? Are secular or religious groups more prone to exhibiting …

The Political Economy Of Regionalism: Regional Integration Arrangements And Africa's Development. Comesa In A Comparative Context, George Morara Monyoncho Jan 2005

The Political Economy Of Regionalism: Regional Integration Arrangements And Africa's Development. Comesa In A Comparative Context, George Morara Monyoncho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis adopts a comparative approach to examine the role of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in the promotion of socio-economic and political development in Eastern and Southern Africa. The thesis begins by providing a theoretical background to the concept of regionalism. It then traces the emergence of regionalism within the political economy of the international system, beginning from the era of mercantilism to the era of globalization. It then provides a critical overview of the European Union (the EU), the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Common Market of the Southern Cone (MERCOSUR) and …

The Internet And Citizen Participation In Rulemaking, Cary Coglianese Jan 2005

The Internet And Citizen Participation In Rulemaking, Cary Coglianese

All Faculty Scholarship

Each year, regulatory agencies promulgate thousands of important rules through a process largely insulated from ordinary citizens. Many observers believe the Internet could help revolutionize the rulemaking process, allowing citizens to play a central role in the development of new government regulations. This paper expresses a contrary view. In it, I argue that existing efforts to apply information technology to rulemaking will not noticeably affect citizen participation, as these current efforts do little more than digitize the existing process without addressing the underlying obstacles to greater citizen participation. Although more innovative technologies may eventually enable the ordinary citizen to play …
