The Small Worlds Of Childhood: Philosophy, Poetics, And The Queer Temporalities Of Early Life, Lauren Shizuko Stone
The Small Worlds Of Childhood: Philosophy, Poetics, And The Queer Temporalities Of Early Life, Lauren Shizuko Stone
Gender & Sexuality
The Small Worlds of Childhood argues that prose representations of bourgeois childhood contain surprising opportunities to reflect on the temporality of experience. In their narratives of children at home in their everyday worlds, Adalbert Stifter, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Walter Benjamin are not only able to shed a unique light on key issues in the history of philosophy. They also offer a queer critique of the normative expectation that the literature of childhood is oriented toward the future.
Stone shows that when writers engage in philosophical storytelling, showing children tarrying in quotidian experience, they dislodge childhood from its nostalgic value …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Early Career Elementary Teachers' Self-Efficacy Toward Meeting The Needs Of The Twice-Exceptional Students In The General Education Classroom, Paula Danielle Cox
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological study explored how the lived experiences of elementary school teachers contribute to their self-efficacy when making instructional decisions to support twice-exceptional students in the general education classroom in a large suburban school system in northeast Georgia. The theoretical framework for this study is Bandura's self-efficacy theory. The study participant was the elementary school (K-5) general education teachers in their first five years of service. The phenomenon was examined through surveys, personal interviews, and focus group interviews. Data collection consisted of personal interviews, a questionnaire, and a focus group session with participants. A transcendental phenomenological methodology was used to …
The Experience Of Emptiness: A Creative Exploration Of Indeterminacy, Olivia Kjellander
The Experience Of Emptiness: A Creative Exploration Of Indeterminacy, Olivia Kjellander
Honors College
In an exploration of my own experience of being-in-the-world I produced five pieces of art which are meant to represent my relationships to my environment, with other beings, and the interplay between these interactions which constitute indeterminacy. Informed by readings of phenomenology, existentialism, and classic Chinese philosophy, specifically the Dao De Jing, I expressed my experience as a woman in the 21st century as I engaged in a constant reciprocity of viewing, watching, and self-surveilling. I expressed this experience through art because of art’s unique ability to parallel bodily experience in that it promotes the same exchange of power in …
Amplifying The Experiences Of Trans And Non-Binary Graduate Students At A Canadian University: A Case Study, Malcolm Macdonald
Amplifying The Experiences Of Trans And Non-Binary Graduate Students At A Canadian University: A Case Study, Malcolm Macdonald
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study examines the lived experiences of transgender and non-binary graduate students as they navigate campus spaces at one Canadian university. It contributes to the field by addressing the lack of studies that both center trans and non-binary students and utilize a trans-informed theoretical framework. I conducted a phenomenological case study through semi-structured interviews with five participants attending graduate studies at Sullivan University (a pseudonym) located in Ontario, Canada. By centering trans desubjugation, this study created a safe space for trans and non-binary graduate students to articulate their experiences navigating higher education. The findings revealed that trans and non-binary students …

Health Literacy Among Chronic Kidney Disease Patients: Disparities In Information Seeking, Educational Needs, And The Role Of Healthcare Professionals, Fitri Mailani, Rahmi Muthia, Emil Huriani, Rika Sarfika
The Qualitative Report
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a complex disease that poses various challenges to patients. Health Literacy (HL) is considered essential for the effective management of CKD. This phenomenological study explored health literacy in 12 patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis in Padang, Indonesia. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted, and the data were analysed and interpreted using the hermeneutical phenomenological approach of Diekelmann. We found six themes: sources of information and knowledge, differences in patient attitudes and behaviors as health information seekers, learning needs for successful treatment and care, effective learning and education methods, experiences with alternative treatments, and positive …
The Meaning Of Work For Generation Y And Baby Boomer Individuals During The Pandemic: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Tabitha Coates
The Meaning Of Work For Generation Y And Baby Boomer Individuals During The Pandemic: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Tabitha Coates
The Qualitative Report
Findings on generational differences and similarities are inconclusive and inconsistent. There is a need to conduct research that focuses on a deeper understanding of generations, that can help overcome stereotypes in the workplace. The uncertainty and disruption of the pandemic generated an opportunity to understand the lived experience of constructing and reconstructing meaning in relation to work. This article presents findings from a hermeneutic phenomenological study conducted to understand the meaning of work during the pandemic among seven participants, four Generation Y individuals and three Baby Boomers, and in what ways, if any, their meaning of work changed. Five essential …
Helping To Make The Complex Accessible: A Review Of Larsen And Adu’S The Theoretical Framework In Phenomenological Research: Development And Application, Stephanie Greenquist-Marlett
Helping To Make The Complex Accessible: A Review Of Larsen And Adu’S The Theoretical Framework In Phenomenological Research: Development And Application, Stephanie Greenquist-Marlett
The Qualitative Report
Understanding the philosophical underpinnings behind phenomenological research is critical for pursuing a proper qualitative study on one’s lived experiences. Larsen and Adu’s The Theoretical Framework in Phenomenological Research: Development and Application succeeds in breaking down the theoretical viewpoints and methodology of phenomenology and delivering it in a manageable way for researchers and practitioners alike. While novices may find the complexity of the theoretical content comparing Edward Husserl’s transcendental approach and Heidegger’s hermeneutic Dasein framework to be daunting, the book does lend itself as an instructional tool that offers easy-to-follow guidelines for those at any experience level interested in pursuing a …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Women With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Madeline M. Dougherty
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Currently, there are many barriers to women seeking diagnosis and treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These barriers include greater under-diagnosis and fewer medical consultations. Often thought of as a "male smoker's" disease, in the past decade there has been a sharp increase in the number of COPD cases in women. This research explored the lived experiences of women with COPD through diagnosis and treatment. This research used van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenological methodology guided by a critical theory paradigm. The results highlighted the experiences of women with COPD, what women want from their care, and recommendations to better support …
Using Hermeneutic Phenomenology To Research Teacher Professional Learning, Rosamund Whaley
Using Hermeneutic Phenomenology To Research Teacher Professional Learning, Rosamund Whaley
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
The professional growth of teachers is complex to study given the many factors involved in both adult learning and student outcomes. This article proposes phenomenology as an effective philosophy and method to provide a holistic investigation by describing a hermeneutic study of the professional learning experiences of teachers in the International Baccalaureate program. It is hoped this account will clarify some of the misconceptions regarding the different forms of phenomenology and provide detailed guidance to researchers utilizing this methodology to study professional development and other forms of learning in educational contexts.
Phenomenology Via A Narrative Inquiry In Action: A Study Identifying Themes Of Persistence And Barriers Faced By African American Male Students In Their Pursuits Of Higher Education, Jeremiah Rotich
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
The use of phenomenology via a narrative inquiry is increasingly becoming popular in qualitative research study as it provides an unparalleled approach in sharing lived experiences. This article employs a narrative inquiry study to improve the understanding as to why Black male students (also known as African American male students) graduate from college at a lower rate than their Latino, White, and Asian counterparts in the United States. These narratives helped describe the barriers that have frustrated African American male students from persisting in higher education. Participants identified the lack of financial support, lack of cultural competency, lack of identity, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study, grounded in a phenomenological perspective, delves into the lived experiences of early childhood teachers who teach multilingual children in mainstream classrooms in Tennessee. Amidst the rising number of multilingual learners in mainstream educational settings and the dearth of adequate teacher training to address their needs, this research illuminates the experiences of these teachers. Furthermore, it seeks to advocate for the integration of translanguaging pedagogy into teacher training programs and state policies. This study employed a qualitative study using the three-in-depth-interview series from a phenomenological perspective (Seidman, 2019). The first interview focused on participants’ overall teaching experiences and …

Small In Number, Large In Impact: The Recruitment And Retention Of Middle School African American Male Stem Teachers, Cris L. Garner Ii
All Dissertations
Watson and Smitherman (1996) emphasized the important role African American male teachers can play in schools, particularly in those with African American male students. They argued that these teachers serve as positive role models and provide culturally relevant support. Gay (2020) highlighted that the lack of African American male teachers exacerbates the challenges faced by African American male students. This underrepresentation can lead to feelings of isolation and a lack of engagement. Furthermore, it may contribute to lower academic achievement and fewer opportunities for success among African American male students.
The study sought to determine (1) the perception of the need …

A Rehabilitation Of The Body As Home: Reconstructing Young’S Feminist Phenomenology, Amanda Nicole C. Collantes
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This essay investigates Iris Marion Young’s account of female bodily experience and reconstructs her feminist phenomenology with the aim of reinterpreting and enriching the tradition of embodiment using feminist critique. It offers a clearer, more cohesive reconstruction of Young’s phenomenology by referencing three essays where she considers a particular aspect of women’s lived bodily experiences. It considers three recurring themes that appear in and are developed in the three main essays by Young referred to throughout the study. It presents personal, lived experience as political, thus encouraging social cooperation and women’s solidarity through collective meaning-making and a recovery of our …
Atmospheres Of Ableism: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Everyday Encounters, Kelly Parke
Atmospheres Of Ableism: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Everyday Encounters, Kelly Parke
2024 Symposium
Campbell and Nario-Redmond explain that ableism entails explicit and implicit biases that manifest at every level of social life. At the same time, Taussig describes ableism as "the atmosphere we breathe." Disability Studies scholarship has done much to identify how ableism operates in the everyday lives of disabled and non-disabled people alike; however, little work has been done to articulate it in terms of the atmospheric quality that Taussig discusses.
Building on Taussig's assessment of ableism in conjunction with Casey's similar articulation of the atmosphere of emotion, this paper addresses the findings of an online qualitative survey distributed to adults …

Masters Theses
This thesis is an exercise in, perhaps a futile, attempt to trace just some of the ideas, stories, and musings I might meander through in my process. It’s not quite a map, nor is it a neat catalogue; it is a haphazard collection of tickets and receipts from a travel abroad, carelessly tossed in a carry-on, only to be stashed upon returning home. These ideas are derived from much greater thinkers and authors than myself; I am a mere collector or a translator, if that, and not a very good one, for much is lost. I do not claim comprehensive …

Long Covid Patients: A Phenomenology Study Exploring Mental Health And Psychosocial Adaptation To Disability, Tonia Joy Lans
Dissertations
In the United States, approximately 1 in 13 long COVID patients experience adverse complications two to three years post-recovery (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022), including physical, psychological, and cognitive impairment, issues with daily functioning, and difficulties returning to work (del Rio et al., 2020; Greenhalgh et al., 2020; Ladds et al., 2020; Logue et al., 2021). Moreover, collective research has indicated the debilitating complications of long COVID often result in impaired mental health, chronic illness, and disability. While significant research efforts have started to accumulate data to understand and treat the physical and neuro-logical manifestations of this chronic …
Consciousness And The Reality Of Monsters In Horror Movies: Dehumanization And What Monsters In Horror Films Say About Us, Leila Kincaid
Consciousness And The Reality Of Monsters In Horror Movies: Dehumanization And What Monsters In Horror Films Say About Us, Leila Kincaid
Journal of Conscious Evolution
This essay responds to Carroll’s The Nature of Horror from the perspective of transdisciplinary phenomenological film theory, largely developed by Edgar Morin in the 1950s. It argues that Carrolls’s reduction of the phenomenological value of horror films to an unreal category minimizes and even dismisses the inherent value of horror films. Morin, Allan Combs, and others offer more integral and transdisciplinary methods for art interpretation and functionality. They help us understand how monsters in horror films can stand as mirrors and reflections of the monstrous in ourselves and society. Thus, the transformational function and value of film is revealed and …
