Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Utilization of mixtures with high amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in the pavement industry is limited because of the adverse effects of aged materials in recycled asphalt materials. To date, numerous approaches have been used to reduce the adversity of RAP in mixtures. One such approach is the use of recycling agents (RAs) from various sources, such as petroleum and bio-oil. However, the current need is to maximize the use of RAP by adopting a sustainable source of RAs. Therefore, this study uses two RAs based on vegetable oils (crude soybean oil and crude corn oil) with high-RAP mixtures …

High-Temperature Thermal, Tribological And Mechanical Properties Of High-Entropy Alloys And Alloys Composites, Tri D. Vo
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+
The discovery of High-Entropy Alloys (HEAs) has been a significant development in the field of Materials Science. In 2004, Cantor introduced the concept of single solid solution alloys containing several elements in equal or near equal proportions. The concept was also introduced by Yeh and co-workers, who coined the term ‘HEA’. This challenged conventional thinking about how alloys could be designed and opened up new possibilities for creating materials with unique properties. In 2014, Yiping Lu and his team proposed the concept of dual-phase eutectic HEAs, which has enabled the development of improved HEAs with both high strength and high …

Recycling Of Cured Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Resin Laminated Composites Scraps: Processing And Characterization, Khaled Mohammed Al Harmoodi
Theses
The concept of reinforced composites came decades ago from the need to fabricate high-strength, heat-resistant, wear-resistant, and low-density materials. The polymer matrix composites offer a wide range of applications due to the collaborative nature of the functional fillers and polymers present. Towards the twenty-first century, the aviation industry flourished due to flying being the preferred way of travel across states and countries. With such a massive demand for air transport, there is an equally parallel demand for the production of aircraft components. This study aims to reuse the waste of uncured composite prepreg scraps from the ply-cutting manufacturing process in …

Nanorings To Probe Mechanical Stress Of Single-Stranded Dna Mediated By The Dna Duplex, Karen Zagorski, Tommy Stormberg, Mohtadin Hashemi, Anatoly B. Kolomeisky, Yuri L. Lyubchenko
Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences
The interplay between the mechanical properties of double-stranded and single-stranded DNA is a phenomenon that contributes to various genetic processes in which both types of DNA structures coexist. Highly stiff DNA duplexes can stretch single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) segments between the duplexes in a topologically constrained domain. To evaluate such an effect, we designed short DNA nanorings in which a DNA duplex with 160 bp is connected by a 30 nt single-stranded DNA segment. The stretching effect of the duplex in such a DNA construct can lead to the elongation of ssDNA, and this effect can be measured directly using atomic …

The COVID-19 pandemic has escalated the occurrence of hypoxia including thrombotic stroke worldwide, for which nitric oxide (NO) therapy seems very promising and translatable. Therefore, various modes/routes of NO-delivery are now being tested in different clinical trials for safer, faster, and more effective interventions against ischemic insults. Intravenous (IV) infusion of S-Nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), the major endogenous molecular pool of NO, has been reported to protect against mechanical cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (IR); however, it has been never tested in any kind of "clinically" relevant thromboembolic stroke models with or without comorbidities and in combination with the thrombolytic reperfusion therapy. Moreover, "IV-effects" of …

Development Of A Multi-Scale Mechano-Electrochemical Battery Model, Drew J. Pereira
Theses and Dissertations
As the automotive industry moves towards large format electric vehicles, such as trucks and SUVs, the need for highly efficient, energy-dense electrodes rapidly increases. Several promising active materials have been studied and proposed, however, many of these materials undergo significant volume change upon lithiation and de-lithiation. Cell and pack designers struggle to understand and predict how active material volume change at the particle scale will affect mechano-electrochemical behavior on the electrode, cell, and pack scales. Additionally, many of these active materials suffer in their cycle life due to a mechanically-driven degradation of the electrode matrix. Therefore, the focus of this …

Pseudo-Ductile 3d Printed Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Shreya Vemuganti
Pseudo-Ductile 3d Printed Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Shreya Vemuganti
Civil Engineering ETDs
The use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials is continuously growing in civil infrastructure owing to its high strength, low weight, and manufacturing flexibility. However, FRP is characterized by sudden failure and lacks ductility. When used in construction, gradual failure of FRP components is desired to avoid catastrophic structural collapse. Due to its mechanical orthotropy, the behavior of FRP relies significantly on fiber orientation and stacking sequence. In this research proposal, investigations showed that novel multi-angled glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites with varying fiber orientation angles, stacking sequence, and thickness of laminas can be designed and fabricated using 3D …
New Force Transducer For Mitral Valve Chordae Tendinea, Joseph Berryman

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
In order to inform the future of mitral valve repair and replacement, more investigation into the mechanics of the sub-valvular structure is needed. Understanding the roles of each chord during valve closure requires a sensor capable of detecting these small forces with enough sensitivity to determine the characteristics of each of the chordal types. The focus of the cantilever force transducer is to maximize this sensitivity while also minimizing the invasiveness of the sensor on the overall function of the chord. The design utilizes flexible yet strong 3D printed resin and cantilever arms to improve the strain exerted on a …
Parametric Design Of Flywheel For An Electric Punch Press, Prashant Dhakal
Parametric Design Of Flywheel For An Electric Punch Press, Prashant Dhakal
Honors Theses
Almost all designs start with a design requirement. These may be weight, volume, clearance, and even custom calculations. Finding a solution that meets these requirements often involves tedious and time-consuming iterations. Once the solution has been found, the design must be optimized to find the best possible solution. Finding the ‘best possible design’ requires substantial time and effort dedicated to iterating and analyzing the potential model solutions. This is where Parametric design comes into play. The Parametric design aids in specifying the key parameters of the design and makes changes interactively, with the model updating automatically. The purpose of this …

Establishing Independent Tunability Of The Mechanical And Transport Properties Of Polymer Gels, Lucas Rankin
Establishing Independent Tunability Of The Mechanical And Transport Properties Of Polymer Gels, Lucas Rankin
Master’s Theses
Polymer gels can be used in the fabrication of materials for filtering liquid and gaseous media, solid-state electrolytes, and transdermal medical patches. This diverse range of applications primarily relies on the transport and mechanical properties of polymer gels. Both sets of properties have shown excellent tunability, but typically in a coupled fashion. Establishing the independent tunability of the transport and mechanical properties of polymer gels (using simple, cost-effective methods) is paramount if polymer gels are to be used to their full potential. Specifically, block copolymer gels self-assemble into organized nanoscale networks within the gel solvent, which allows for facile control …
