Strategies To Manage Quality In Outsourced Manufacturing Processes, Claudia Elizabeth Contreras
Strategies To Manage Quality In Outsourced Manufacturing Processes, Claudia Elizabeth Contreras
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Offshore outsourcing operations that involve high risks of noncompliance with quality specifications have been studied among scholars. Researchers have demonstrated that organizations pursue offshore outsourcing to reduce costs and to remain competitive; however, noncompliance with quality specifications increases product costs. Grounded in the total quality management model, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore business managers’ strategies used to ensure compliance with quality standards when outsourcing manufacturing processes internationally. The participants consisted of 3 managers of companies in Riverside County, California, who successfully outsourced offshore manufacturing operations. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and validated with …

Formula Sae Intake System, Esa Mahmood, Arman Sarwar, Michael R. Smith
Formula Sae Intake System, Esa Mahmood, Arman Sarwar, Michael R. Smith
Capstone Design Expo Posters
The Formula SAE Intake System is intended to optimize the airflow into a restricted 600cc engine. The intake system is designed, fabricated, and installed in accordance with the FSAE rule book with a focus on maximizing the vehicle’s acceleration. It is directly responsible for determining the drivability of the car and how much horsepower the flow restricted engine produces.
Design of the intake was conceptualized based on researching a number of factors including venturi diffusion angles, plenum volumes, and runner lengths. Initial tests were performed utilizing computational fluid dynamics for a total of 367 flow simulations and 261 running hours …

In this paper a method is being proposed to find the optimal dimension of Programmable Gate Macro Block (PGMB) in clock-free nanowire crossbar architecture. A PGMB is a nanowire crossbar matrix with discrete number of rows and columns on which the NCL (Null Convention Logic) gates can be programmed. This method uses inherent redundancy to route through defective crosspoints. A 6 X 10 defect-free crossbar can be used to program any of the 27 threshold gates. Due to imperfections and variations in nanoscale manufacturing process, high defect densities are anticipated. Thus, such defects should be located when tested and the …

The metal layered manufacturing processes have provided industries with a fast method to build functional parts directly from CAD models. This paper compares current metal layered manufacturing technologies from including powder based metal deposition, selective laser sinstering (SLS), wire feed deposition etc. The characteristics of each process, including its industrial applications, advantages/disadvantages, costs etc are discussed. In addition, the comparison between each process in terms of build rate, suitable metal etc. is presented in this paper.

This paper presents a method for analyzing the environmental performance of solid freeform fabrication (SFF) processes. In this method, each process is divided into life phases. Environmental effects of every process phase are then analyzed and evaluated based on the environmental and resource management data. These effects are combined to obtain the environmental performance of the process. The analysis of the environmental performance of SFF processes considers the characteristics of SFF technology, includes material, energy consumption, processes wastes, and disposal. Case studies for three typical SFF processes: stereolithography (SL); selective laser sintering (SLS); and fused deposition modeling (FDM) are presented …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Summary form only given. An examination is made of the potential of neural networks and the impact of parallel processing in the design and operations of manufacturing systems. After an initial discussion on possible areas of application, an approach that integrates artificial intelligence, operations research, and neural networks for the solution of a scheduling problem is examined
