Theory Guided Professional Development In Early Childhood Science Education, Soo-Young Hong, Julia Torquati, Victoria J. Molfese

Soo-Young Hong

The importance of early and developmentally appropriate science education is increasingly recognized. Consequently, creation of common guidelines and standards in early childhood science education has begun (National Research Council (NRC), 2012), and researchers, practitioners, and policy makers have shown great interest in aligning professional development with the new guidelines and standard. There are some important issues that need to be addressed in order to successfully implement guidelines and make progress toward accomplishing standards. Early childhood teachers have expressed a lack of confidence in teaching science and nature (Torquati, Cutler, Gilkerson, & Sarver, in press) and have limited science and pedagogical …

Why ‘Dead White Guys’ Help Advance The Human Condition, August Nagro '15

2013 Fall Semester

Enlightenment often comes from unexpected sources. What English student, for example, could expect to be influenced by the works of a dead, blind author who yelled, “milk me! Milk me!” (Elfer), when calling his daughter to jot down his thoughts? While outlandish, John Milton (the author mentioned above) wrote persuasive literature that formed a snapshot of historical controversies of the time. English class should provide students with the critical thinking and writing skills necessary for their future, introduce students to philosophical controversy encouraging analytical analysis, and provide a historical basis for literature. These goals are only enhanced through the exploration …

The Imsa-Sf Paradigm: Why It’S All The Same To Me, Sarah Weitekamp '11 Oct 2010

The Imsa-Sf Paradigm: Why It’S All The Same To Me, Sarah Weitekamp '11

2010 Fall Semester

On what must have been my third or fourth day of IMSA, I remember an upperclassman asking me, “You’ve read Ender’s Game, right? You have to read that book—everyone at IMSA does.” I had, in fact, read the book, and I immediately felt relieved. I felt had passed my first test at IMSA, plus I was geeked to learn that my taste in books wasn’t out of place here. I shouldn’t have been so surprised. IMSA is overflowing with science fiction fans of all varieties—we are a nerd school after all, even if the Admissions Office disapproves of my …

Scientific Speculators: Imsa As Training Ground For Science Fiction Readers, Lisa Akintilo '11 Oct 2010

Scientific Speculators: Imsa As Training Ground For Science Fiction Readers, Lisa Akintilo '11

2010 Fall Semester

Science fiction (SF) is one of the world’s fastest-growing literary genres. Created as a separation from traditional writing styles, it challenges its followers to question the framework of societies across the globe. One would think that such a genre would allow people of all different ages, shapes, and sizes to enjoy its distinctive novels, but this is not the case. Readers of SF must be inquisitive, opinionated, and confident; in other words, be extremely similar to a student at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. IMSA’s belief statements and learning standards perfectly align with editor David Hartwell’s description of an …

Illinois Science Academy: A Proposal To The State Of Illinois, Corridor Partnership For Excellence In Education, Friends Of Fermilab

IMSA History

There is a widely recognized perception that the nation facing a crisis in fulfilling its needs for citizens trained in the fields of science, mathematics and technology. In particular, the State of Illinois has an obligation toward this national issue and to .its own need to develop these human resources that are so intimately coupled to economic leadership in a post-industrial society. This is a very broad challenge; here we propose to address only one important aspect: the nurturing of creative excellence in students of science and mathematics. We are concerned with the extraordinarily gifted person--the upper few tenths of …
