Modernizing The Birds And The Bees: New Standards For Sexual Education, Ashley Whetten, Katie Whitehead Apr 2022

Modernizing The Birds And The Bees: New Standards For Sexual Education, Ashley Whetten, Katie Whitehead

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Conversations surrounding sexual education usually revolve around comprehensive sexual education curricula and abstinence-only until marriage curricula. These conversations and the federal funding budgets that developed from these programs prevent innovation and modernization of sexual education programs. Furthermore, research has demonstrated major flaws in both curricula. This paper does not argue for one approach to sexual education over another; instead, the proposals in this paper aim to bridge long-standing disputes on sexual education by creating a new standard of sexual education that also addresses the major downfalls of both current curricula. In order to qualify for funding the program would require …

Application Of Linear Algebra Within The High School Curriculum: Designing Activities To Stimulate An Interest In Upper-Level Math, Shelby Castle Mar 2022

Application Of Linear Algebra Within The High School Curriculum: Designing Activities To Stimulate An Interest In Upper-Level Math, Shelby Castle

Honors Theses

This senior project outlines potential lecture activities for a guest speaker or teacher in a high school classroom to present interesting applications of linear algebra. These applications are meant to be pertinent to things students at this age level are already learning or are interested in. The activities are designed such that the ideas of upper-level math are introduced in a very guided and non-intense way. The intent of the activities is mostly applications and interesting results rather than mathematical lecturing or instruction.

The high school level courses explored in this project are chemistry, economics, and health/physical education. For these …

Problem Centered Teaching By Tomorrow, Cassandra Armstrong Jan 2021

Problem Centered Teaching By Tomorrow, Cassandra Armstrong

Publications & Research

Problem Centered Instruction is a great way to engage students, integrate content, and inspire learning. However, true problem centered instruction requires a major shift in both teaching and learning, requiring the one thing teachers don't have: time. In today's session, we will look at some simple strategies that teachers can put to immediate use within the classroom to help start the shift towards a student-led, problem centered learning environment.

Preservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Perceptions Of Proof In The Secondary Mathematics Classroom, Gregory S. C. Hine, Kristin Lesseig, Kaleinani S. Boardman Nov 2018

Preservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Perceptions Of Proof In The Secondary Mathematics Classroom, Gregory S. C. Hine, Kristin Lesseig, Kaleinani S. Boardman

Gregory S.C. Hine

Despite the recognized importance of mathematical proof in secondary education, there is a limited but growing body of literature indicating how preservice secondary mathematics teachers (PSMTs) view proof and the teaching of proof. The purpose of this survey research was to investigate how PSMTs in Australia and the United States perceive of proof in the context of secondary mathematics teaching and learning. PSMTs were able to outline various mathematical and pedagogical aspects of proof, including: purposes, characteristics, reasons for teaching, and imposed constraints. In addition, PSMTs attended to differing, though overlapping, features of proof when asked to determine the extent …

Caring, Male African Americans, And Mathematics Teaching And Learning, Jason G. Hunter, David W. Stinson Jan 2018

Caring, Male African Americans, And Mathematics Teaching And Learning, Jason G. Hunter, David W. Stinson

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

In this paper, the authors report on a qualitative study that explored the influence a “successful” African American male mathematics teacher had on three African American male high school students’ perceptions of teacher care. This critical ethnography study was guided by an intersection of an eclectic array of theoretical traditions, including care theory, critical race theory, and culturally relevant pedagogy. The study employed ethnographic methods during data collection; data analysis identified six overarching themes that the participants used to describe teacher care. Findings suggest that teachers should reconsider the ways they care for African American male students and that a …

conceptual framework was Villa and Thousand's 5 system-level best practices for successful

inclusive education. A purposeful sampling procedure was used to select 4 general education

teachers who were teaching autistic students in an inclusive setting; this sample included 2 middle …

Crossing “The Problem Of The Color Line”: White Mathematics Teachers And Black Students, Carla Bidwell, David W. Stinson Jan 2016

Crossing “The Problem Of The Color Line”: White Mathematics Teachers And Black Students, Carla Bidwell, David W. Stinson

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

In this paper, the authors explore—within an eclectic theoretical framework of critical theory, critical race theory, and Whiteness studies—the life experiences of four White high school mathematics teachers who were “successful” with Black students. The data were collected through three, semi-structured interviews, conducted over a 5-month time period. Through a cross-case analysis of the data, three commonalities among the teachers were identified as being significant contributors to their success in teaching Black students. Two commonalities the participants themselves felt strongly about, and a third became apparent during the cross-case analysis: (a) forming meaningful relationships with students, (b) engaging students in …

High School Teachers' Use Of Graphing Calculators When Teaching Linear And Quadratic Functions: Professed Beliefs And Observed Practice, Levi Molenje May 2012

High School Teachers' Use Of Graphing Calculators When Teaching Linear And Quadratic Functions: Professed Beliefs And Observed Practice, Levi Molenje

Teaching and Leadership - Dissertations

This study was designed to explore secondary mathematics teachers' beliefs about graphing calculators, their practices with the graphing calculators when teaching linear and quadratic functions, and the relationship between the teachers' beliefs and their practices. The study was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, 81 teachers responded to a questionnaire about their beliefs regarding the use of graphing calculators in the teaching and learning of linear and quadratic functions. Six of these teachers then participated in the second phase involving task-based interviews and classroom observations.

A major finding from the survey was a possible link between teachers' frequency …

An Experimental Approach To Teaching The Concept Of Functional Diversity., Cory Mckelvey Stanley May 2002

An Experimental Approach To Teaching The Concept Of Functional Diversity., Cory Mckelvey Stanley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study tested an experimental approach to use in teaching the concept of functional diversity. The project culminated in a laboratory exercise for use in high schools.

Experimental design consisted of representatives of three functional groups of plants, (legumes, grasses, and forbs), planted singly, and in two, or three species combinations. Legumes were represented by Trifolium repens and Medicago lupulina, grasses were represented by Cynodon dactylon and Festuca rubra, and forbs were represented by Helianthus annus and Raphanus sativa.

Plants were grown inside a controlled growth chamber. During the growth phase, measurements were taken to highlight temporal …

Relative Scholastic Success Of College Students From High Schools Of Varying Sizes, Leonard Lee Hudson Aug 1933

Relative Scholastic Success Of College Students From High Schools Of Varying Sizes, Leonard Lee Hudson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Education in America has made substantial growth in its various phases. No factor has been more marked than in the secondary field. The South was tardy in establishing a systematic scheme owing to the devastation of a Civil War and the misunderstandings natural to a reconstruction period. Many forces for the improvement of the secondary field in this section are now accomplishing wonderful results. Accrediting associations to investigate, recommend, and regulate certain practices, different divisions of the state department of education to supervise and inspect, research organizations, graduate schools, and school authorities are adding to the fund of knowledge regarding …
