Solomon Buckman Dr.

The Walash and Naopurdan groups are incorporated into the lower allochthonous thrust sheet in the Iraqi Zagros Suture Zone (IZSZ). 40Ar–39Ar dates on magmatic feldspar separates from both Walash and Naopurdan volcanic rocks indicate an Eocene–Oligocene age (43.01 ± 0.15 to 24.31 ± 0.60 Ma). The Walash and Naopurdan groups form a thrust sheet that is structurally overlain by an upper allochthon of Cretaceous arc-related rocks (106–92 Ma) now known as the Hasanbag igneous complex (formerly known as the Gemo–Qandil Group). The Walash and Naopurdan lower allochthon is thrust over the foreland basin Red Beds series. Volcanic and subvolcanic units …

How Do School Social Workers Provide Support To Children Of Divorce?, Kimberly Johnson May 2013

How Do School Social Workers Provide Support To Children Of Divorce?, Kimberly Johnson

Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers

The ongoing impact of divorce on elementary school-aged children has been associated with lower academic achievement, behavioral problems, relational issues, depression, and risk of developing short-and long-term mental health symptoms. School-based divorce support groups are one way children may receive support to cope with ongoing stressors associated with growing up in divorced or separated families. The purpose of this project was to explore elementary school social workers perspectives regarding what services they are able to provide to children who come from divorced, separated, or never married households and at what frequency. If divorce groups were offered in an elementary school …

Trading Boots For Books: A Psychoeducational Group For Military Veterans Enrolled In Higher Education, Jessamyn Randall, Lilith Spry, Herman L. Lukowh Ii May 2013

Trading Boots For Books: A Psychoeducational Group For Military Veterans Enrolled In Higher Education, Jessamyn Randall, Lilith Spry, Herman L. Lukowh Ii

The William & Mary Educational Review

More than ten years of armed conflict and educational benefits offered as an incentive to enlistment have produced a small but growing population of veterans attending colleges and universities. These students may feel isolated from peers and underutilize existing transition services. The authors present format and content for a psychoeducational group experience that integrates social support and academic skill building.

The Emotional Logic Of Participation In Intergroup Violence, Christopher Bruce Phillips Claassen Apr 2013

The Emotional Logic Of Participation In Intergroup Violence, Christopher Bruce Phillips Claassen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Existing theories of intergroup violence focus on the motives of group or leaders. But why do thousands of people choose to take part given the dangers and risks? This dissertation develops a model, the entitlement-blame-anger model, to explain participation in intergroup violence. According to this model, participation is motivated by emotional reactions of intergroup anger. Anger is useful in this respect because it shapes both the preference for confrontation and beliefs about the risks of taking part. Intergroup anger, in turn, is triggered by appraisals that the outgroup are to blame for some harm suffered by the ingroup. Blame and …

Discovery Of Fe Kα X-Ray Reverberation Around The Black Holes In Mcg-5-23-16 And Ngc 7314, A. Zoghbi, C. Reynolds, E. M. Cackett, G. Miniutti, E. Kara, A. C. Fabian Apr 2013

Discovery Of Fe Kα X-Ray Reverberation Around The Black Holes In Mcg-5-23-16 And Ngc 7314, A. Zoghbi, C. Reynolds, E. M. Cackett, G. Miniutti, E. Kara, A. C. Fabian

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Several X-ray observations have recently revealed the presence of reverberation time delays between spectral components in active galactic nuclei. Most of the observed lags are between the power-law Comptonization component, seen directly, and the soft excess produced by reflection in the vicinity of the black hole. NGC 4151 was the first object to show these lags in the iron K band. Here, we report the discovery of reverberation lags in the Fe K band in two other sources: MCG-5-23-16 and NGC 7314. In both objects, the 6-7 keV band, where the Fe Kα line peaks, lags the bands at lower …

Finitely Presented Groups For The Undergraduate Algebra Student, Davis Shurbert Jan 2013

Finitely Presented Groups For The Undergraduate Algebra Student, Davis Shurbert

Summer Research

The concept of a finitely presented group is a topic which students do not normally see until graduate school. Through contributions to the open source computer algebra system Sage, I was able to accomplish my goal of making finitely presented groups more accessible to undergraduate students. Implementing this goal required a series of smaller tasks, all building together to expand the original framework regarding this type of group representation. I began my research by creating a catalogue of named groups easily accessible to the user as finitely presented group objects, along with a method to convert from a permutation group …

Neglected Stakeholder Groups: A Case Study Of Recreational Vehicle Users In Tasmania, Anne Hardy, Ulrike Gretzel, Mark Wickham Jan 2013

Neglected Stakeholder Groups: A Case Study Of Recreational Vehicle Users In Tasmania, Anne Hardy, Ulrike Gretzel, Mark Wickham

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Traditional stakeholder mapping tools have concentrated on the identification of issues such as power, urgency and predictability of stakeholder groups. Yet they do not sufficiently address the ability of neglected stakeholder groups to communicate, gain and use their power when issues affecting them arise, suggesting that traditional approaches have to be updated to accommodate suddenly emerging stakeholder groups. This paper uses the case study of Recreational Vehicle Users in Tasmania, Australia, to explore the issue. In doing so it illustrates the risks of ignoring these groups, particularly when developing public policy. The paper proposes a more iterative and consultative approach …

'The Books Don't Talk To Me!': Postgraduate Student Groups And Research Student Identity Formation, Felicity Bell, Rita Shackel, Linda Roslyn Steele

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

This paper explores alternative spaces for learning amongst postgraduate research (PGR) students in the form of research-related groups such as reading and discussion groups, writing groups, seminar series or social groups. Our research with PGR students and academics explores the pedagogy and role of such groups in student learning and identity formation. In this paper, we discuss our findings related to PGR student needs and the factors prompting the formation of research-related groups. A survey of 36 PGR students revealed that students were reasonably satisfied with the formal components of their research degrees such as supervision and mandatory units of …

Food Groups And Fatty Acids Associated With Self-Reported Depression: An Analysis From The Australian National Nutrition And Health Surveys, Barbara J. Meyer, Nithin Kolanu, David A. Griffiths, Ben Grounds, Peter R. C Howe, Irene A. Kreis

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Objective The aim of this study was to explore the associations between incidence of depression and dietary intakes of foods and fatty acids in adult Australians. Methods Data from the 1995 Australian National Nutrition Survey (NNS), the 1995 Australian National Health Survey (NHS) and an updated fatty acid database were merged and the 24-h fatty acid intakes were calculated for the 10 986 adult participants ages 18 to 79 y in the 1995 NNS. The merged data set was used to run a logistic regression with depression as the response variable and the food groups and calculated fatty acid values, …

Arrival Order Among Native Plant Functional Groups Does Not Affect Invasibility Of Constructed Dune Communities, T J. Mason, K French, D Jolley Jan 2013

Arrival Order Among Native Plant Functional Groups Does Not Affect Invasibility Of Constructed Dune Communities, T J. Mason, K French, D Jolley

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Different arrival order scenarios of native functional groups to a site may influence both resource use during development and final community structure. Arrival order may then indirectly influence community resistance to invasion. We present a mesocosm experiment of constructed coastal dune communities that monitored biotic and abiotic responses to different arrival orders of native functional groups. Constructed communities were compared with unplanted mesocosms. We then simulated a single invasion event by bitou (Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp. rotundata), a dominant exotic shrub of coastal communities. We evaluated the hypothesis that plantings with simultaneous representation of grass, herb and shrub functional groups at …

Galois Theory And The Hilbert Irreducibility Theorem, Damien Adams Jan 2013

Galois Theory And The Hilbert Irreducibility Theorem, Damien Adams

Master's Theses

We study abstract algebra and Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem. We give an exposition of Galois theory and Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem: given any irreducible polynomial f(t1, t2, …, tn, x) over the rational numbers, there are an infinite number of rational n-tuples (a1, a2, …, an) such that f(a1, a2, …, an, x) is irreducible over the rational numbers.

We take a preliminary look at linear algebra, symmetric groups, extension fields, splitting fields, and the Chinese Remainder Theorem. We follow this by studying …
