Reimagining Inclusion: Shaping The Future Of Special Education Engagement, Selena Rodriguez
Reimagining Inclusion: Shaping The Future Of Special Education Engagement, Selena Rodriguez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
For this Capstone Project, the researchers investigated how special education teachers, general education teachers, and a behavioral technician at Landscape Elementary view student engagement and what they think could be done to improve it. This is important because students with special needs deserve quality education that revolves around equity. It is argued that special education teachers require increased support that empowers them to effectively engage students and promote their learning. The primary stakeholder perspectives chosen were three general education teachers, two special education teachers, and one behavioral technician, because they all have experience in working with students with special needs. …

A student's relative age in their schooling cohort has been shown related to several measures of academic and labor market success. Here, we focus on a singular outcome: the probability of college course failure. Even within a sample constrained to students with traditional academic progression and who completed their college degree program, we find evidence relatively younger students were more likely to fail courses. The estimated impact is larger for males, minorities, and those with less academic success before college. Statistical significance remains constant across the parental income distribution. Students within the sample represent over 600 colleges and universities across …

General anesthesia (GA) during surgery is commonly maintained by inhalational sevoflurane. Previous resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) studies have demonstrated suppressed functional connectivity (FC) of the entire brain networks, especially the default mode networks, transitioning from the awake to GA condition. However, accuracy and reliability were limited by previous administration methods (e.g. face mask) and short rs-fMRI scans. Therefore, in this study, a clinical scenario of epilepsy patients undergoing laser interstitial thermal therapy was leveraged to acquire 15 min of rs-fMRI while under general endotracheal anesthesia to maximize the accuracy of sevoflurane level. Nine recruited patients had fMRI acquired during …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The effect of anesthesia choice on endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) outcomes is unclear. Collateral status on perfusion imaging may help identify the optimal anesthesia choice.
METHODS: In a pooled patient-level analysis of EXTEND-IA, EXTEND-IA TNK, EXTEND-IA TNK part II, and SELECT, EVT functional outcomes (modified Rankin Scale score distribution) were compared between general anesthesia (GA) vs non-GA in a propensity-matched sample. Furthermore, we evaluated the association of collateral flow on perfusion imaging, assessed by hypoperfusion intensity ratio (HIR) - Tmax > 10 seconds/Tmax > 6 seconds (good collaterals - HIR < 0.4, poor collaterals - HIR ≥ 0.4) on the association between anesthesia type and EVT outcomes.
RESULTS: Of 725 treated with EVT, 299 (41%) received GA …
Assessing African American Perceptions Of Racial Discrimination By Law Enforcement In Rural South Georgia, Joseph Bacot
Assessing African American Perceptions Of Racial Discrimination By Law Enforcement In Rural South Georgia, Joseph Bacot
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African Americans make up a very small percentage of our nation’s population. However, studies have shown that they are treated unfairly by law enforcement at higher rates than their white counterparts. The purpose of this qualitative study was to utilize a phenomenological approach to assess the perceptions of the lived experience of African Americans who claim to have been the recipients of racial discrimination by police. The study specifically focused on targeted rural areas in South Georgia to determine if “rural” life would alter how recipients perceived the overall legitimacy of policing after encountering a racially discriminatory interaction with police. …

Status To Be Determined: Analyzing Indian Status Within The General Crimes Act In A Post-Castro-Huerta Landscape, Joshua Zoeller
Saint Louis University Law Journal
The General Crimes Act, codified at 18 U.S.C. § 1152, is an older statute that pertains to federal criminal jurisdiction over crimes committed in Indian Country. The General Crimes Act is limited in scope as it only applies to cases where the alleged perpetrator of the crime is not a Native American but the victim is determined to be a Native American. But who decides how to label each party as “Indian” or “non-Indian” (to borrow language used in the courts)? And is ‘Indian status’ an element of the statute that the prosecution must prove or is it reserved for …

Physics
Context. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are thought to be intimately connected with their host galaxies through feeding and feedback processes. A strong coupling is predicted and supported by cosmological simulations of galaxy formation, but the details of the physical mechanisms are still observationally unconstrained.
Aims. Galaxies are complex systems of stars and a multiphase interstellar medium (ISM). A spatially resolved multiwavelength survey is required to map the interaction of AGN with their host galaxies on different spatial scales and different phases of the ISM. The goal of the Close AGN Reference Survey (CARS) is to obtain the necessary spatially resolved …

We report results of our analysis of the Kepler superaperture LC data of the open cluster NGC 6791 to search for pulsating sdB stars. We checked all pixels and we found only three sdB stars to be pulsating, KIC 2569576 (B3), KIC 2438324 (B4), and KIC 2437937 (B5). These stars were known to be pulsators before, though we extended data coverage detecting more frequencies and features in their amplitude spectra, i.e. new ltiplets and more complete period spacing sequences that we used for identifying geometry of the pulsation modes. The ltiplet splittings were also used to derive rotation periods. The …

Background: The effects of spinal anesthesia as compared with general anesthesia on the ability to walk in older adults undergoing surgery for hip fracture have not been well studied.
Methods: We conducted a pragmatic, randomized superiority trial to evaluate spinal anesthesia as compared with general anesthesia in previously ambulatory patients 50 years of age or older who were undergoing surgery for hip fracture at 46 U.S. and Canadian hospitals. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive spinal or general anesthesia. The primary outcome was a composite of death or an inability to walk approximately 10 ft (3 …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Knowledge base question answering (KBQA) aims to answer a question over a knowledge base (KB). Recently, a large number of studies focus on semantically or syntactically complicated questions. In this paper, we elaborately summarize the typical challenges and solutions for complex KBQA. We begin with introducing the background about the KBQA task. Next, we present the two mainstream categories of methods for complex KBQA, namely semantic parsing-based (SP-based) methods and information retrieval-based (IR-based) methods. We then review the advanced methods comprehensively from the perspective of the two categories. Specifically, we explicate their solutions to the typical challenges. Finally, we conclude …

Towards A Unified General Theory Of Law In The Arab And Islamic World- Prof. Mustafa Al - Jammal
UAEU Law Journal
This study starts by observing the duplicity that exists in the legal culture in the Arab and Islamic world, stemming, as it does, from the interaction with western legal culture, while a t the same time preserving the Islamic legal culture . This study aims at opening the way to unify the two cultures, in such a manner that would serve pedagogic and educational purposes in a contemporary Islamic society. The projected study consists of consecutive essays, and begins with this essay which discusses the issue of the definition of law. This essay comprises four points: The first point criticizes …
