Identity Negotiation, Saudi Women, And The Impact Of The 2011 Royal Decree: An Investigation Of The Cultural, Religious, And Societal Shifts Among Women In The Saudi Arabian Public Sphere, Maha Alshoaibi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historically, Saudi Arabian culture has been deeply rooted in tradition, religious customs, family-oriented structures, and gender derived expectations for men and women alike. Saudi Arabian culture emphasizes a patriarchal family structure where men financially provide for their family whereas women are expected to manage internal household duties such as raising children, upholding household affairs, and working within a limited scope of employment. The concept of Saudi Arabian women integrating into the public workforce has been a source of contention and debate for the last several hundred years. Due to recent changes in political and economic events, a royal decree issued …

The objective of this study was to investigate the connection between the gender of the coach and the perceived motivational climate that is established on a college sports team. Eighty-eight athletes completed the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire (PMCSQ-2) to assess their perceptions of the motivational climate that is established on a college sports team. The study further investigated the influence of the gender of the athlete, as well as the athlete's preference for either an Ego-oriented or Task-oriented motivational climate. Personal interviews were conducted with each of the six participants, who were all international undergraduate students studying at the …

Comparison Of Learning Outcomes From Online And Face-To-Face Accounting Courses, Joel Faidley Aug 2018

Comparison Of Learning Outcomes From Online And Face-To-Face Accounting Courses, Joel Faidley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Online education continues to evolve and grow dramatically at colleges and universities across the globe. Today’s society is comprised of people who are increasingly busy with work and family obligations and who are looking for more flexible and expedited avenues for higher education. Institutions seek to meet these new demands by offering online distance educational opportunities while increasing cash flow for their college. Unfortunately the pitfalls to this rush to meet online demand results in what some researchers assert are inadequate quality content and curriculum. Others indicate there are not significant differences in the outcomes from online learning compared with …

"What Is The M/F Problem?": Critical Discourse Analysis In Anne Fausto-Sterling's Sexing The Body: Gender Politics And The Construction Of Sexuality, Marysarah Grace Reid Jul 2018

"What Is The M/F Problem?": Critical Discourse Analysis In Anne Fausto-Sterling's Sexing The Body: Gender Politics And The Construction Of Sexuality, Marysarah Grace Reid

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current dominant understandings of biological sex and gender that rely upon binary constructions are problematic on cultural, political, and individual levels. Cultural misunderstandings of the complexities of biological sex have harmful consequences, including the unnecessary surgical and medical interventions on intersexed bodies and the negative psychological effects of gender stereotypes. Anne Fausto-Sterling’s book, Sexing the Body: Gender Politics and the Construction of Sexuality (2000), advances necessary progressive feminist perspectives on the subject. I employ critical discourse analysis comparing original scientific and academic discourses with the author’s translations. I argue that she questions binary sex development and assignment in ways that …

American Myth And Ideologies Of Straight White Masculinity In Men's Literary Self-Representations, Mary Parish May 2018

American Myth And Ideologies Of Straight White Masculinity In Men's Literary Self-Representations, Mary Parish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines three autobiographical texts written in post-World War II America (1959-1973) that take as their subject a straight white man’s reflection on and engagement with the exercise of male power and the forces, both internal and external, that shape the degree to which he is “self-made,” i.e., an autonomous agent able to exert his will within a life domain (domestic, public, and war). Each of these writers engages in surveillance not solely of their own power, but also of the men who influence their experience, using their observations to critique, assert, and question the gendered realities and expectations …

Jumping Over The Hurdle : Examining And Overcoming The Barriers For Women In Intercollegiate Athletics Through Mentorship., Emma Mary Cohen May 2018

Jumping Over The Hurdle : Examining And Overcoming The Barriers For Women In Intercollegiate Athletics Through Mentorship., Emma Mary Cohen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Given the evident underrepresentation of females working intercollegiate athletics at all levels, there is a growing need to understand the types of barriers that limit women and cause these disproportionate representation(Acosta & Carpenter, 2014; Staurowsky & Smith, 2016). There is also a need to explore the impact of meaningful mentorship to combat these apparent obstacles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the barriers women currently face as they enter the intercollegiate athletics workplace in entry-level positions and explore the role of mentors in their career success. Entry-level sport administrators are a demographic of the industry that has not …

Behind Every Man Is A Strong Woman: Reconsidering The Form And Function Of Old Kingdom Dyads From Giza, Alexandria Danielle Salisbury Apr 2018

Behind Every Man Is A Strong Woman: Reconsidering The Form And Function Of Old Kingdom Dyads From Giza, Alexandria Danielle Salisbury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Statues of males and females, usually of husbands and wives, first appear during Egypt’s Old Kingdom from the Fourth through Sixth Dynasty (2649 - 2150 BCE). Known as “pair statues” or “dyads,” the two individuals are seated or standing beside one another. In most instances, the female touches or holds her male counterpart, which may or may not be reciprocated by the male figure. Research has shed much light on royal dyads, like those of the pharaoh Menkaure (4th Dynasty). However, non-royal dyads have not yet received adequate attention, except in cases where scholars discuss size variations of the individuals …

Whither The Gender Of Get Out: A Critique Of The Cinematic (Im)Possibilities Of The Black Political Imagination, Daelena Tinnin Jan 2018

Whither The Gender Of Get Out: A Critique Of The Cinematic (Im)Possibilities Of The Black Political Imagination, Daelena Tinnin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the entanglements of spatialized racial-sexual violence, conceptualizations of black female subjectivity, questions of the limitations and excesses of media representations and the socioeconomic, cultural and spatiotemptoral relations that make black images visible and (im) possible as they are situated in the cinematic black political imagination. Through a materialist media analysis of the 2017 film Get Out, I argue that the film and its articulation of the afterlife of slavery fails to account for gender by tangentially engaging black women in its dissection of race and racism. I contend that black women are the absent presence in …

Monstrous Mouths, Im/Mature Lips: Orality And The Queering Of Age And Gender In Contemporary Horror, Kyle Christensen Jan 2018

Monstrous Mouths, Im/Mature Lips: Orality And The Queering Of Age And Gender In Contemporary Horror, Kyle Christensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes representations of the mouth in the horror genre. I focus on contemporary iterations of well-known figures of horror defined by monstrous uses of the mouth, including the female rape avenger and the act of spitting in I Spit on Your Grave (2010), the blood-drinking vampire in Let Me In (2010), the voice of the slasher horror Final Girl in the television series Scream Queens, and the bite of the Zombie Mouth Fleshlight. I propose the term horr/orality to describe how the mouth provides a vantage point for exploring how identitiesin particular, age and genderare enacted through the …

Essays In Finance, Management, And Real Estate, Minxing Sun Jan 2018

Essays In Finance, Management, And Real Estate, Minxing Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents three papers in three different areas: finance, management and real estate. The first essay investigates whether CEO gender influences the likelihood of dismissal. We theorize and find that, ceteris paribus, female CEOs are significantly more likely to be dismissed than male CEOs. Perhaps even more importantly, we find a CEO gender by firm performance interaction such that male CEOs are less likely to be dismissed when firm performance is high (compared to when it is low), whereas female CEOs have a similar level of dismissal likelihood regardless of firm performance. The second essay illustrates that managers strategically …

Small Batch: Women's Positions In Southern Craft Beverages, Victoria De Leone Jan 2018

Small Batch: Women's Positions In Southern Craft Beverages, Victoria De Leone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores three different forms of narrative in order to understand how and why craft beverage industries, specifically beer and whiskey, have been framed as masculine spaces. Women who seek to work in or around these industries are often sorted into the marketing, sales and service corners of the industry, and the production floor still hosts very few women, and those women must negotiate performing their femininity and the masculinities deemed necessary for the environment simultaneously. I argue that the way that we talk about women who choose to do this work is rooted in a history of domestic …

Deconstructing Abject Complacency Of Ascribed Gender, Kyle M. Hooten Jan 2018

Deconstructing Abject Complacency Of Ascribed Gender, Kyle M. Hooten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My life has been dedicated to the relentless pursuit of masculinity throughout my transition from female to male. While originally focusing on the physical transition, my attention is now focused on the social aspects of transition. For me, this involved coming out, managing legal name/gender change paperwork, and understanding a newfound, cultural privilege. This is where I draw inspiration to create my work. My process and techniques are informed by Drag Kings and Queens as well as contemporary culture and art. After performing as a Drag King for a year I developed a sense of gender that differed from what …
