Sport Psychology Utilization Among College Football Coaches: Understanding College Football Coaches’ Attitudes About Sport Psychology, Aaron W. Halterman, Jesse A. Steinfeldt, Jeff Ruser, Julia Cawthra, Ashley Neidigh

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

As the field of Sport Psychology (SP) continues to expand and become more embedded within college athletic programs, it is necessary to assess practices by which sport psychology providers can be effective in delivering services and accessing populations. Football represents a particular athletic subculture that paradoxically needs services but can be difficult to access. This current study examined perspectives of college football coaches in order to further expand the understanding of college football coaches’ knowledge about sport psychology by assessing coaches’ abilities to identify mental health concerns and their willingness to refer student- athletes to mental health services. Coaches revealed …

Black Football Student-Athletes’ Perceived Barriers To Seeking Mental Health Services, Todd A. Wilkerson, Sarah Stokowski, Alison Fridley, Stephen W. Dittmore, Charles A. Bell

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Black male student-athletes have endured frequent stereotyping on college campuses (Hawkins, 2010). Additionally, Black student-athletes have experienced educational, campus, and athletic stressors (Miller & Hoffman, 2009). Many student-athletes do not seek mental health services because of their status on campus (Watson, 2005). The general population has experienced common barriers in seeking mental health services including low socio-economic status (Hurd, Stoddard, & Zimmerman, 2013) and negative stigmas related to metal illness (Wang et al., 2005). While it is reasonable to assume similar challenges exist for Black student-athletes, it must be investigated empirically. As such, the purpose of this study was to …

The Impact Of Video Assistant Referee (Var) On The English Premier League, Jack Kenyon Brown

Master's Theses

The aim of this study is to examine how the introduction of the Video Assisted Referee (VAR) system influenced the English Premier League (EPL). Since its implementation in the English Premier League in 2019, VAR has been a constant source of debate and controversy. Many studies have been done on the immediate impact of VAR on other elite professional soccer leagues, but the scope of results is very limited and due to be updated. The data for the ensuing analysis consists of 3800 matches played in the English Premier League during the five seasons before (14/15, 15/16, 16/17, 17/18, and …

The Qualitative Report

Football is a sport that has attracted global attention. Individuals who attend competitive football associate with teams and athletes to a point where they become ardent attendees. Post-pandemic, fans have returned in droves to watch live matches at stadiums following the relaxation of strict observance of safety protocols. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to determine the factors that prompt fans to attend matches during games by focusing on three main factors including team affiliation, sportscape and star players. We used a qualitative phenomenological approach to obtain deeper comprehension regarding factors that influence fans to crowd at stadiums to …

Corporate Social Responsibility In Sport: The Illustrative Case Of The German Men’S Bundesliga, Denise Morawek

Masters Theses

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a pivotal aspect for companies and governments, exceeding mere risk management to create opportunities and enhance overall performance. While the concept of CSR in sports

is relatively recent, its significance is growing, especially in Germany’s sport industry. The Bundesliga, one of the world’s top football leagues, showcases a unique CSR landscape shaped by societal, economic, and political drivers. Societal motives reinforce regional identity, economic strategies target customer retention, and political actions, including governmental programs and football governing bodies’ initiatives, shape CSR endeavors. Germany’s distinctive 50+1 rule, albeit with exceptions, highlights the fan-centric model. The …

Development Of A Discrete Element Model For Artificial Turf, Justin Rittenhouse Apr 2024

Development Of A Discrete Element Model For Artificial Turf, Justin Rittenhouse

Dissertations

NFL data exhibits a distinct correlation between an elevated lower extremity injury rate and synthetic surfaces. These ubiquitous injuries frequently relate to excessive foot traction (i.e., failure to release causing fracture or soft tissue damage). Consequently, a discrete element model was developed using open-source software to analyze stud traction. First, laboratory data was collected via bench level experiments covering seventeen different testing scenarios. A minimum of twenty-five samples were collected per scenario. Total work, average torque, and maximum torque were used as indicators of stud grip. And the latter two were statistically analyzed for outliers and significant differences. Next, an …

On The Value Of A Premium College Football Player: Evaluating The Literature, Jeremy M. Losak, Benjamin J. Posmanick, Raymond Sauer

Sport Management - All Scholarship

Over the past decade, the issue of player compensation in college sports has been the subject of several successful legal challenges. Athletes contend that the compensation they receive falls significantly short of the value they generate, attributing this gaps to unlawful NCAA restrictions. Numerous tools exist in the sport economic literature that estimate the value of colelge athletes, with an emphasized focus towards premium college football players. In addition to providing updated estimate of player marginal revenue product (MRP), we review past and contemporary methodologies for esitmating colllege player MRPs. We contend that, while presenting some evidence that restrictions on …

The Relationship Between Shoulder Mobility And Upper Body Muscle Mass On 2-Rm Bench Press Performance, Raquel J. Cavazos, Francesca Aquilino, Ernesto Balderrama, Chaehyun Byun, Shelby Gerner, Cheyenne Martinez, Austin Riffe, Vipa Bernhardt, Michael D. Oldham

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

INTRODUCTION: Upper body strength is one of the most important factors in American football and thus tested frequently. However, strength may come at the cost of mobility as recent studies have reported an inverse relationship between shoulder range of motion (ROM) and strength, with an increase in strength causing a decrease in ROM (Shitara et al., 2022). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if upper body muscle mass or shoulder mobility are associated with two-repetition max (2-RM) bench press performance in collegiate football players. METHODS: Data from 80 Division I varsity football players (20.5 ± 1.4 …

Student Publications

Background:

In 2020, COVID-19 spread across the world and brought normal daily life to a halt, causing the shutdown of nearly everything in order to prevent its spread. The National Football League (NFL) similarly experienced shutdowns and the resulting effects, leaving athletes unable to train in some of the most advanced facilities with many of the best trainers in the world. A previous study, titled COVID-19 Return to Sport: NFL Injury Prevalence Analysis, determined that there was increased injury prevalence during the 2020 season, likely due to decreased physiological adaptations within athletes’ bodies as a result of facility shutdowns. …

Historical Racism And Professional Football, Evan Leaf Jan 2024

Historical Racism And Professional Football, Evan Leaf

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

Ideas of biological differences between people of different racial groups have existed in the United States for centuries, either as popular belief or pseudo-scientific fact. These supposed biological differences have evolved over time as they incorporated new anecdotes and stereotypes. Today, the impact of these supposed biological differences can be found in sports through racial stacking. Stacking is a phenomenon whereby players of a certain racial group are more likely than players of other racial groups to play a certain position. This thesis investigates stacking in the National Football League, using both content analysis of football commentary and an experimental …

“Little Old Wales”: Expressions Of Nationalism, Language And Pride In Welsh Football, Abigail Mathieson Dec 2023

“Little Old Wales”: Expressions Of Nationalism, Language And Pride In Welsh Football, Abigail Mathieson

Masters Theses

Welsh football, through its use of material culture, language, and acknowledgements of history, has become a major force in representing Welsh national identities locally and globally. This thesis expands on Benedict Anderson’s idea of the “imagined community” through contemporary research from academic sources and from voices throughout the Welsh footballing community. It highlights the significance of the sport in national identity, especially within smaller nations such as Wales with histories of post-colonialism. Along with this, football shows the role cultural nationalism plays in the nation of Wales and in its independence movements.

No Difference Found In Hamstring Strength Across Division I Football Positions, Hunter Jack, Kaden Kennard, Spencer Jezek, Joshua Sponbeck, Malorie Wilwand, A. Wayne Johnson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Hamstring injuries are one of the most common injuries sustained in professional football with 800+ hamstring injuries per year. These hamstring injuries often occur between late swing (eccentric contraction) and early ground contact. PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation of eccentric hamstring strength to muscle volume across positional groups. METHODS: Athletes were divided into three homogeneous groups based on position (big (e.g., linemen), skill (e.g., receivers), combo (e.g., linebackers)). Seventy-three NCAA Division I football players participated (24 big, 37 skill, and 12 combo). Hamstring strength was collected for each leg while performing 3 Nordic curls on a Nordbord device. The peak …

The Effects Of Accessory Blood Flow Restriction Training On Muscle Size And Strength In Division Iii Soccer Athletes: A Preliminary Ecological Study, Kaitlyn Judd, Christian Morales, Megan White, Kate Wilkie, Justin Faller, Stephen Ives

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(6): 1244-1256, 2023. Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) uses occlusion during low-intensity resistance training (< 50% of 1-repetition maximum, 1RM) to reduce arterial blood flow and venous return, imposing greater metabolic stress but similar muscular hypertrophy and strength gains as high-intensity resistance training (HIRT). However, no study, to date, has incorporated BFRT in a collegiate strength and conditioning setting to assess ecological validity. We aimed to investigate the effects of adding 6-weeks of accessory BFRT or HIRT to NCAA Division III soccer players prescribed resistance training regimen on muscle strength and size. Male and female (n = 17) athletes were randomly assigned to complete biceps curls 2x/week under BFRT or control (HIRT), following regularly scheduled strength training. Bicep strength (1RM) and circumference (BC) were assessed at weeks 0, 3, and 6 (men only). In men, for BC no significant interaction of condition x time was observed (p = 0.861), though condition (BFRT vs Control, p = 0.025) and time (p = 0.024) were significant. For 1RM, there was no significant interaction of condition …

The burden of pain is unequal across demographic groups, with broad and persisting race differences in pain-related outcomes in the United States. Members of racial and ethnic minorities frequently report more pervasive and severe pain compared with those in the majority, with at least some disparity attributable to differences in socioeconomic status. Whether race disparities in pain-related health outcomes exist among former professional football players is unknown. We examined the association of race with pain outcomes among 3995 former professional American-style football players who self-identified as either Black or White. Black players reported more intense pain and higher levels of …
