IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
The tiller is the basic unit of grass growth and tiller density determines the horizontal ground cover, leaves production and pastures perennially. The objective in this study was to quantify the number of aerial and basal tillers and basal:aerial tillers ratio in Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu, established in Brazilian savannah, submitted to nitrogen doses (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N/ha). The experiment was carried out in the Forage and Pasture Sector of Jataí Federal University (UFJ) and after soil correction and fertilization, plots were established with Marandu palisade grass in a randomized block design, with four replications and four …

Sugarbeet and sugarcane are the major sources of sucrose, a sweetener in a vast range of foods. Total world production of sucrose was estimated at 126,500 metric tons in 1998-1999 of which 37 percent was from sugarbeet and 63 percent was from sugarcane. This Extension Circular discusses the importance of growing sugarbeets and sugarcane in the states of Nebraska, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Mulching, pruning, watering, wrapping, staking, and fertilizing affect the growth and development of young trees. This NebGuide explains the proper practices of caring for newly planted trees.
Landscape trees provide beauty and utility. The care they receive during the first few years after planting is critical. This NebGuide discusses cultural practices that are recommended for young trees. Many recommendations have changed drastically in recent years in light of new and more thorough research.

G91-1022 Guide To Growing Houseplants, Don Steinegger, Frederick P. Baxendale, John E. Watkins
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Proper care can extend houseplants' lives. This NebGuide offers hints on conditioning, light, fertilizing and more.
Many people enjoy houseplants; in fact, raising them is one of the fastest growing indoor hobbies. Caring for houseplants offers opportunities for people who like to work with living things and watch them develop. Today, houseplants are an integral part of indoor decor -- especially in winter.
An artificial indoor environment often hinders plant development. High temperatures, low humidity, lack of sunlight, poor soil conditions, and improper watering contribute to most houseplant problems. In addition, insects or plant diseases occasionally damage houseplants.
While plants …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Iris culture emphasizes the best in site selection, planting, winter care and protection, and control of insects and diseases.
The iris is one of the most popular and beautiful of the garden flowers. With the range in plant type, size, and adaption, there is an iris for almost any location.
More than 200 species of iris have been found in the wild. From these species thousands of varieties have been named and made available. Plant size ranges from about 6 inches in the miniatures to more than 3 feet in the large types. Flowers can be 1 or 2 inches …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses alfalfa production, including site selection and preparation, fertilization, variety selection, seeding, companion crops, stand management, weed control and stand renovation.
Alfalfa can produce more protein per acre than any other crop in Nebraska. Up to 100 percent of the protein needs of most livestock can be supplied by alfalfa in addition to large amounts of vitamins, minerals, and energy.
G82-601 Using Phosphorus Fertilizers Effectively, E.J. Penas, D.H. Sander
G82-601 Using Phosphorus Fertilizers Effectively, E.J. Penas, D.H. Sander
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
For most effective use of phosphorus, the fertilizer needs to be placed to ensure quick contact by growing roots and minimal contact with the soil.
Phosphorus (P) fertilizers are second only to nitrogen fertilizers in importance for growing crops in Nebraska. However, the principles affecting efficient phosphorus use are totally different. Nitrogen is a mobile nutrient both inside the plant and in the soil, while phosphorus moves very little in the soil. In addition, total plant phosphorus requirements are much lower than those of nitrogen. Plant leaves commonly contain ten times more nitrogen than phosphorus. However, phosphorus is concentrated in …
Field Preparation For Pasture Renovation, Harold B. Rice
Field Preparation For Pasture Renovation, Harold B. Rice
Soil Science News and Views
Grassland renovation is the improvement of pasture and hay fields by partial destruction of the sod, plus liming, fertilizing, and seeding as may be required to establish or re-establish desirable forage plants without an intervening crop. In Kentucky, this improvement has been primarily through the seeding of legumes such as clovers and alfalfa into grass sods.
Since liming and fertilizing are essential steps in pasture renovation the FIRST step is to have your soil tested to determine how much lime and plant nutrients to apply. Seedbed preparation will range from none to complete disturbance of the existing sod depending on …

G79-464 Composting Municipal Sewage Sludge Slurry, Leon Chesnin
G79-464 Composting Municipal Sewage Sludge Slurry, Leon Chesnin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Municipalities can save operating expenses, eliminate pollution problems and increase the convenience of their waste management program by recycling their sewage sludge slurry in agricultural soils.
Sewage sludge slurries have from 2 to 10-percent solids depending on the treatment plant design and operation procedures. Sewage slurries with more than 8 percent solids are difficult to pump because of high friction in the pipe lines and pump mechanism. Sewage slurries can be applied to agricultural fields by gravity flow and sprinkler irrigation systems, as well as by tank trucks that either broadcast spray on, or inject the slurry into, the soil. …

G73-20 Fertilizing Through Center Pivots, Paul E. Flschbach
G73-20 Fertilizing Through Center Pivots, Paul E. Flschbach
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
There are two decisions and three sources of information that are needed before applying fertilizer solutions through a center-pivot sprinkler system. These are discussed in this publication.
The decisions are: the amount of nitrogen to be applied per acre through center-pivot sprinkler system; and the kind of fertilizer solution to be applied.
The information needed is: the number of acres that will be irrigated in one revolution of the center-pivot sprinkler system; the amount of time required to make one revolution of the center-pivot sprinkler system; and the rate at which your porportioning pump can inject a fertilizer solution into …
