Theatre Arts Integration For Deeper Learning In The English-As-A-Foreign-Language Classroom, Andrew Zutell Dec 2020

Theatre Arts Integration For Deeper Learning In The English-As-A-Foreign-Language Classroom, Andrew Zutell

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This quasi-experimental case study examines the impact of theatre arts integration in an English-as-a foreign language (EFL) course in a competency-based international high school. Aiming to engage students in a process of deeper learning through drama, this study focuses on the domain of speaking and oral communicative competence. Although widely recognized as one of the most important college-and-career-readiness skills, oral communication is often overshadowed by high-stakes testing priorities such as reading and writing. In particular, many Chinese students of English struggle to achieve confident oral fluency despite years of study. This research was designed to investigate whether theatre arts integration …

Removing The Fence?: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Corequisite Courses, Faculty Validation, And Equity For Men Of Color In Community College English, Daniel Hogan

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The passage of California’s AB 705 in 2017 mandated that community colleges drastically reimagine their English course offerings in an effort to increase student throughput and eliminate equity gaps. This typically meant replacing traditional remedial coursework and placement with corequisite models of remediation, wherein students took transfer-level courses with built-in concurrent remedial support.

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore the relationship between these structural changes and non-traditional relational success markers, namely faculty validation, especially for male Black and Latino students in English at a large urban California community college. The quantitative phase was a survey of over …

Understanding Provider And Parent Experiences In Caring For Hospitalized Young Children: Summary Findings From A Formative Study In Kenya, Breakthrough Research

Reproductive Health

Although young children are unable to articulate their own experiences, their experiences can be studied by collecting responses from parents of hospitalized newborns and young children (0–24 months). It is also critical to understand the role of health providers, including their communication and behaviors with parents and families caring for hospitalized young children. This formative study of the manifestation of mistreatment of newborns, infants, and young children (0–24 months) led to co-design (with families and providers) of a set of interventions that promote a positive experience of care. The study was conducted in five hospitals in Kenya: Pumwani Maternity Hospital, …

HIV and AIDS

Although the disparity in HIV prevalence among young women and their male counterparts is not new, there is increasing recognition that addressing the unmet HIV prevention needs among AGYW is necessary to achieve epidemic control. In Ethiopia, data characterizing unmet HIV prevention needs and HIV risk vulnerabilities among AGYW, particularly out of school AGYW, have been limited. Armauer Hansen Research Institute and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health through Project SOAR conducted an integrated HIV biobehavioral survey (IBBS) focused on out-of-school adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15–24 years to assess AGYW HIV risk vulnerability. Innovating And Validating Measures Of Complex Concepts, Evidence Project Dec 2020

Innovating And Validating Measures Of Complex Concepts, Evidence Project

Reproductive Health

Over the past several decades, a number of measures have been developed to assess complex concepts including quality of care (QoC) for family planning (FP) services, anticipated stigma, and gender and power. These measures may predict uptake of health services, contraceptive continuation, and other health-seeking behaviors. Use of these measures may be limited because they are often lengthy and have not undergone extensive assessments for reliability and validity. This brief provides an overview of the Evidence Project's validation of existing measures of QoC for FP and development of a new, shorter measure of QoC; design and validation of a measure …

Expanding Access And Method Choice: Evidence Of Client Self-Administration Of Injectables And Private Sector Provision Of Family Planning Services In Three West African Countries, Evidence Project

Reproductive Health

Governments across West Africa have expressed their commitment to increasing access to voluntary family planning (FP) through global and regional initiatives such as FP2020 and the Ouagadougou Partnership, and through targeted national strategies. Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal, among other countries, have been exploring new strategies to expand access to voluntary FP service delivery. Context-specific evidence was needed for two promising strategies—1) task sharing of FP services to private sector drug shops and pharmacies, and 2) introducing self-injection of subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC). The Evidence Project collaborated with stakeholders in Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal to use implementation science (IS) to …

A Lyrical Comparison Of Suzanne And Its Translation, Natalie Sadler Nov 2020

A Lyrical Comparison Of Suzanne And Its Translation, Natalie Sadler

The Corinthian

This paper compares Leonard Cohen’s song Suzanne and its French translation by Graeme Allwright. It takes translation principles into account, by relying on translator Antoine Berman’s “Twelve Deforming Tendencies of Translation.” In his reliance on the instrumental model, which tries to find equivalence and treat the translation as a reproduction of the original, Allwright’s translation misinterprets several important elements in the original, namely the relationship between the speaker and the Suzanne character. In Cohen’s original, the character Suzanne is expected to follow the speaker and is changed by his “superior” intellect, while in Allwright’s version Suzanne is likened to a …

Comparative Analysis: Animal Research Versus Animal Testing, Hannah Vanhoose Nov 2020

Comparative Analysis: Animal Research Versus Animal Testing, Hannah Vanhoose

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Currently, there is a push to eliminate the use of animals in all experimental settings. Animal rights organizations like PETA and the Animal Welfare Institute consistently advocate for the well-being of animals in many aspects, including in the laboratory setting. While it is necessary to eradicate the maltreatment of animals found in unregulated testing centers, it is important to distinguish the differences between testing and research involving animals. The focus of this research is to demonstrate that while it is essential to cut down on harmful testing, the use of animals in medical research is crucial.
