Robert Burns’ Poetic Style Through His Poetry, Songs, And Correspondence, Abigail Druckenmiller

This thesis explores connections and contradictions within the songs, correspondence, and poems of Scotland’s bard, Robert Burns. A selection of works from each of these categories is presented to compare the ways Burns writes verse, lyrics, and letters. Through this thesis, I analyzed his work looking at subject matter, use of the Scots dialect, structure, and poetic devices in order to offer holistic commentary on Burns’ style in a way that includes his letters more heavily than most other Burns scholarship. Using the framework of scientific investigation, ‘Familial Dialects’ explores the languages – systems of signs and codification of those signs - of individual members of my family, and the metaphors that arise from their interaction with pieces of the natural world. Each of the pieces combine an inherent form and an organizing action as a means of representing an individual’s form of expression. These familial dialects are created and translated using the methodologies of a naturalist - collection, dissection, observation, and classification. Blue Notes From Three Songs: Malleable Artifacts As Related To Evolving Cultural Identity, Lou Lucas

A consideration of three State Songs, ΓÇ£My Old Kentucky HomeΓÇ¥ by Stephen Foster, ΓÇ£Carry Me Back to Old VirginnyΓÇ¥ by James A. Bland, and ΓÇ£The Missouri WaltzΓÇ¥ with lyrics by James Royce Shannon. The combination of black dialect and negative stereotypes, with elevation to special status impacting identity, necessitated their alteration. Such change reflects societal response to the Civil Rights Movement, while a pragmatic view suggests these malleable artifacts have functioned, and continue to function, as ΓÇ£blue notes,ΓÇ¥ unsettling elements acting to stimulate discourse, becoming participants in the formation of identity and American cultural change.

This paper is the capstone of a personal project which I began three years ago only as a matter of personal interest. While the information the project divulges is not difficult to understand, it should be noted that the details of this subject are virtually inaccessible to Americans or any other person who is not a part of the subculture of the Cockney people. Very little substantial information has been documented on the subject of Cockney dialect and slang. Therefore, most of my knowledge was gained through research and personal interviews with key sources in the London area.
