Who Will Leave? Oil, Migration, And Scottish Island Youth, Carole L. Seyfrit, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Who Will Leave? Oil, Migration, And Scottish Island Youth, Carole L. Seyfrit, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Sociology
Rural communities facing the prospect of rapid energy development consider trade‐offs between economic benefits and “way of life”; as disruption. One of ten‐cited but unproved benefit of development is increased retention of local youth, who otherwise tend to migrate away. Using survey data from high school students of Scotland's Shetland and Orkney Islands (affected by North Sea oil development), we explore relations between intentions to migrate and individual background, aspirations, and attitudes. Attitudes toward oil development do not predict migration intentions. Instead, migration intentions are predicted by essentially the same variables identified in other studies, in areas where energy development …

Master Of Architecture Ii - Thesis (Baltimore's Inner Harbor), Federico G. Beulcke
Architecture Master Theses
This project is interested in the chance to develop a project for a "Museum of the Bay" in Baltimore's Inner Harbor area. The building would contain a somewhat historical retrospective on what the Chesapeake Bay meant for the population living on its coast, focusing in particular on the docks area and its potential development.
The museum itself and the facilities that will naturally be tied to it will be generated by the use of some of the pre-existing structures, connected to a circulation system, and able to work as a starting point for the total recuperation of the area.
Morphological Correlates Of Mechanotransduction In Acousticolateral Hair Cells, J. O. Pickles, G. W. Rouse, M. Von Perger
Morphological Correlates Of Mechanotransduction In Acousticolateral Hair Cells, J. O. Pickles, G. W. Rouse, M. Von Perger
Scanning Microscopy
The development of ideas on mechanotransduction in acousticolateral hair cells is described, leading to the current idea that transduction depends on deflection of the bundle of stereocilia by a force parallel to the plane of the sensory epithelium. Electrophysiological experiments are summarised, suggesting that transduction depends on a shear between the different rows of stereocilia, and that the transducer channels are situated towards the tips of the stereocilia. Analysis of the ways that shear between the rows of stereocilia could be detected suggests that tip links are the structures which are most likely to transmit the stimulus-induced forces to the …
Risk Assessment For Developmental Toxicity: Airborne Occupational Exposure To Ethanol And Iodine, Donald R. Mattison
Risk Assessment For Developmental Toxicity: Airborne Occupational Exposure To Ethanol And Iodine, Donald R. Mattison
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Dean Mattison explains hazard identification, hazard characterization and exposure characterization as furnishing a foundation for Risk assessment generally. He then illustrates their application in assessing the fetal Risk posed by two common substances. Ultimately, he argues that only after Risks have been so examined can women of child bearing age (or anyone) decide what if any measures are appropriate to avoid them.

Japan's Manchukuo Economic Development Or Militaristic Seizure, Nathan Douglas Alder
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Was the founding of the State of Manchukuo an act of independence brought about by the people of Manchuria or a planned take-over by the Japanese military and government? Was Manchukuo a favored trading nation of Japan or just another province in an expanding Japanese empire? Answers to these questions are the motivation for this paper, and aim at the heart of Manchukuo's history.

The Development Of An Instrument For The Assessment Of Obesity-Related Cognitions, David E. Christian
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation involved the design and validation of the Obesity Cognitions Inventory (OCI) which was intended to quantify cognitions associated with obesity. An initial pool of 117 items was refined through expert ratings, a pilot test involving 59 subjects, and a major test and validation using 217 subjects.
The resulting 56-item instrument contains scales measuring five types of cognitions: Personal Control, Dietary Restraint, Cost-Benefit Beliefs, Health Knowledge, and Self-Concept. Test-retest reliabilities for these scales range from .69 to .83 and Cronbach alphas range from .57 to .82. Concurrent criterion validity of the OCI was assessed through two methods (a) correlations …
Development And Evaluation Of An Expert System For Use As An Aid In Culling Dairy Cattle, Max L. Checketts
Development And Evaluation Of An Expert System For Use As An Aid In Culling Dairy Cattle, Max L. Checketts
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An expert system for identifying cows to be culled, MAXCULL, was programmed to run on an IBM or compatible personal computer. It was designed to be used with Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) records as an aid in decision making. MAXCULL used fifty-two health, seventeen reproduction, and thirty-nine production rules in the analysis.
MAXCULL was initially developed using two expert system tools. VP-Expert and Super Expert both had inductive abilities and were reasonably priced. VP-Expert was selected to continue the development of the MAXCULL system. The program used a rule-based method of storing knowledge, which was obtained from literature reviewed in …

Debt, Development, And Human Rights: Lessons From South Africa, Daniel D. Bradlow
Debt, Development, And Human Rights: Lessons From South Africa, Daniel D. Bradlow
Michigan Journal of International Law
This paper, through a case study of financial sanctions against South Africa, demonstrates that it is possible to design a development-oriented financial sanctions strategy against any country that violates the human rights of its citizens and in which government regulations, including exchange controls, result in foreign-owned financial assets being trapped in the target country. This strategy will both deprive the perpetrators of the human rights violations of new funds and will help redirect the blocked funds into activities that are designed to promote the political and socioeconomic development of the victims of the human rights abuses. The means for identifying …

Economic Development, Aid And Debt Crisis In Sub-Saharan Africa, Hassan Ziad Ahmed
Economic Development, Aid And Debt Crisis In Sub-Saharan Africa, Hassan Ziad Ahmed
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the inverse relationship between foreign capital inflow and domestic savings. The results of the tests lead to a variety of outcomes: (1) There is a positive relationship between the domestic savings ratio and the foreign savings ratio in sub-Saharan African countries. (2) The conclusion from the statistical use of the Chow Test shows that the derived results are reliable results, with the exception of one country, Tanzania. (3) There is no evidence from the cross-sectional study of sub-Saharan Africa to support the negative effect. (4) The performance of the lagged form indicated that the lagged function is …
Character Education Through Secondary School Literature Classes, Mary Elizabeth Curfman
Character Education Through Secondary School Literature Classes, Mary Elizabeth Curfman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Perhaps because of a lack of knowledge about American history and tradition, American youth are disconnected from society and feel little moral obligation or responsibility to others. While American public schools traditionally taught values and ethics, most no longer do so in any consistent or systematic fashion; This thesis will defend a synthesis of the thinking of certain influential moral philosophers and learning theorists on the nature of moral character and its development. Since its recommendations are for improving character education in public secondary school literature classes in the Clark County School District, Las Vegas, Nevada, the thesis will also …

A Tale Of Two Families: Change In North Yemen 1977-1989, Sheila Carapico, Cynthia Myntti
Political Science Faculty Publications
Virtually every aspect of life in North Yemen has changed dramatically since 1977, including those aspects of Yemeni society which represent continuity with the past: tribalism, rural life, and use of qat.1 The driving force for change has been economic. By 1975, Yemen was caught up in the dramatic developments that affected all Arab countries. Rising international oil prices generated enormous surpluses in the producing countries, enabling them to initiate ambitious development plans and forcing them to import workers.
The Yemen Arab Republic (YAR) was in a good position to provide those workers. In the late 1970s, one …

Resource Management Plans (UT)
This General Management Plan provides the National Park Service with direction for long-range management, development, and use of the Rainbow Bridge National Monument. The plan responds to new issues identified during the planning process when the draft plan was published in September of 1990. A main concern expressed during public review of the draft plan was diverse public expectations for visitor experience, crowding, and the high number of visitors accessing a limited area of Rainbow Bridge. In addition, the plan and environmental assessment address these diverse public expectations along with the issues of a visitor experience, protection of natural and …
