March: Book Three, Emma Patton
March: Book Three, Emma Patton
Children's Book and Media Review
By 1963, the Civil Rights movement had many supporters, but it still had a long way to go before finally achieving the magnitude of change that its fighters were seeking. Support was split up into different activist groups which all had the same ultimate goal of equality, but had different ideas about how to achieve that goal. John Lewis served as Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during these pivotal years. Amidst mounting tension between various Civil Rights groups, empty promises for change from the White House, and continued violence at the hands of local authorities, Lewis was …

Set against the backdrop of a small rural town in Mississippi during the 1950s, Rose tries to understand and find strength in the tumultuous era of the Jim Crow Laws. Rose is African American and lives with her family of sharecroppers. With her best friend Hallelujah, Rose attempts to understand what it means to be brave and to stand up for what you believe in. As racial tensions escalate throughout the South, Rose delves into civil rights protests, despite her grandmother's wishes. She wrestles with the decision to either stay in the South or join a family living in the …

Chasing King’S Killer: The Hunt For Martin Luther King, Jr.’S Assassin, Melissa Heaton
Children's Book and Media Review
Martin Luther King Jr. is dead and no one can find his killer. Surprisingly, James Earl Ray eludes police and the FBI for almost two months before his capture. How does Ray do it? He is an experienced convict who only knows a life of crime, but he makes some costly mistakes that eventually lead to his arrest. No one knows for sure why Ray chose to kill King, but many chilling events led Ray and King’s paths to cross and eventually collide.
Betty Before X, Taylor Harris
Betty Before X, Taylor Harris
Children's Book and Media Review
No matter how hard she tries, Betty just can’t get her mother, Ollie Mae, to love her. One day, Betty decides that she has had enough of the beatings and lack of love, and so she runs away. A kind, well-off couple takes her in as their daughter. Soon, Betty and her friend Suesetta begin volunteering with the Housewives’ League, an organization that encourages people to not shop at places where Negroes can’t be hired. With all the prejudice, racism, and hate surrounding blacks at this time, Betty is determined to make a difference and learns from her new mother’s …
Let The Children March, Taylor Harris
Let The Children March, Taylor Harris
Children's Book and Media Review
“Let the children march,” Dr. King encouraged, hoping peaceful protests would lead to change. So they did. The children marched. Police brought out high-pressure hoses and attack dogs, jailing hundreds of children in an effort to crush their protest. But courageous children kept marching, singing anthems of freedom even as they were jailed and abused. Their march made a difference. On the tenth of May in 1963, desegregation in Birmingham, Alabama began.

This interview features Ellen McKenzie, an African-American lesbian woman living in Portland, Maine. SURGE
They will treat you as if you have come from an outer space planet. They will be amazed by how much you are different from others. People will make jokes about how much of an “oreo” you are. How your chocolate cookie layers are thinner than your cream filling. [excerpt]
The New Jim Crow’S Equal Protection Potential, Katherine Macfarlane
The New Jim Crow’S Equal Protection Potential, Katherine Macfarlane
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
In 1954, the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education opinion relied on social science research to overturn Plessy v. Ferguson’s separate but equal doctrine. Since Brown, social science research has been considered by the Court in cases involving equal protection challenges to grand jury selection, death penalty sentences, and affirmative action. In 2016, Justice Sotomayor cited an influential piece of social science research, Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, in her powerful Utah v. Strieff dissent. Sotomayor contended that the Court’s holding overlooked the unequal racial impact of suspicionless …
