Audre Lorde Writing Prize
This essay explores the devastating impacts that global warming currently has on women living in the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest globally, located in South Asia. Womanist ideas are employed to identify the underlying injustices within environmental policies like the Paris Agreement, which undermine the effects of climate change in the global south. Initiatives led by women in vulnerable regions are then shared to offer ideas for improvement.

Education Out Loud Case Study: Iid, Alexander Towne, Sladana Krstic, Miriam Linder
International Education Research
The education system in Bangladesh has undergone significant change since the country’s independence from Pakistan in 1971. In 1973 the community-sponsored school system, in which communities felt a moral obligation to take an active role in schools, was transformed into a centralised national system. This caused a shift in the sense of ownership of the education system and a disconnect between community and school. This in turn led to the development of a system, which lacks accountability and community monitoring, and has left the system vulnerable to shocks that disproportionately affect already disadvantaged students. Nevertheless, there have been some notable …

The Qualitative Report
Teachers’ professional ideology and their involvement in out-of-school hours (OoSH) practices have been questioned in recent times. This study explores how schoolteachers understand their professional ideology in relation to their OoSH practices and how they explain their participation in private tutoring in addition to formal schooling. This study deploys a qualitative approach using in-depth semi-structured interviews with nine secondary school teachers in Bangladesh. The thematic analysis highlights a substantial gap between Bangladeshi school teachers’ professional ideologies and their involvement in private tutoring. The findings from the study reveal that the respondents perceive their dual roles as schoolteachers and tutors as …

How Climate Change Is Shaping Young People’S Livelihoods And Educational Opportunities, Population Council, Women Deliver
Adolescents and Young People
The climate crisis is threatening global access to education and the creation of livelihood and/or economic opportunities for adolescents and young people (AYP). Climate change prevents more than 12.5 million girls from completing their education each year, and this is projected to increase. The Population Council and Women Deliver conducted participatory, AYP co-led focus group discussions in three countries (Bangladesh, Guatemala, and Nigeria). In each country, a participant in the Women Deliver Young Leaders program teamed up with Council researchers to talk to AYP (ages 12–25 years) about how climate change is affecting their lives, from health to education to …

The Health Effects Of Climate Change: Experiences Of Young People In Bangladesh, Guatemala, And Nigeria, Population Council, Women Deliver
Adolescents and Young People
Climate change is affecting the health and well-being of adolescents and young people (AYP) worldwide. This happens through direct exposure pathways but mainly indirectly, by influencing economic and food insecurity, access to health services, and harmful gender norms and social inequalities. According to a recent meta-analysis of 130 studies, climate change disproportionately harms the health of women and girls, especially younger generations. There are intergenerational inequities in exposure to climate extremes. A child born in 2020 will face an up to sevenfold increase in extreme climate events compared to one born in 1960. These events will have cascading harms and …

Biodiversity In Grassland: Bangladesh Perspective, B. Hossain
Biodiversity In Grassland: Bangladesh Perspective, B. Hossain
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
The rapidly increasing human population in Bangladesh has caused widespread damage to and disturbance of natural habitats and a loss of indigenous wildlife. There are now very few, if any, extensive patches of grassland in Bangladesh and any that might remain are inundated for two-thirds of the year with no alternative refugia available. Most remaining grassland areas are fragmented, heavily used and harvested up to three times a year. Furthermore, the reed lands of northeast Bangladesh were leased out for paper production and are reported to have been entirely destroyed and settled by encroachers. Tall grasslands around rivers and lakes …

Researching Elite Interviewing In Higher Education In Postcolonial Bangladesh, Ariful H. Kabir
The Qualitative Report
The concept of “elite interviewing” is a recent phenomenon in educational research and has been studied widely in the Western context. Drawing on my own experience, this article traces the challenges and difficulties involved in “elite interviewing” in higher education in post-colonial Bangladesh. It is based on a critical methodological perspective, using a thematic analysis of interviews with 28 higher education policy-making elites working between the 1990s and 2010s at the state level in Bangladesh. This article examines how the local power structure within the current socio-political context emerged from a long colonial past, and how this in turn influenced …

Integration Of Forage Production In Rice-Based Cropping Systems For Mitigating Forage Crisis Of Ruminant Livestock - Studies In Bangladesh, M. A. Akbar, M. S. U. Bhuiyan, M. S. Islam
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Intensive rice cropping in Bangladesh is causing alarming shortages of forage and low ruminant productivity. This is also causing degeneration of soil fertility. Therefore it is imperative to identify some approach to integrate fodder production into rice cropping systems on rural farms. The integration of legume forage may improve soil fertility and soil structure, thus enhancing crop yield and may provide high quality feed for livestock (Haque 1992). Studies were done to investigate the effects of rice/forage integration on forage yield, soil fertility and also on milk yield of cows fed on the grown forages.

Tracing The Impact Of Migration In Bangladesh: From Partition To The Pandemic, Sabrin Sarwar
International Journal on Responsibility
The challenge of migration has been multidimensional, with ramifications that range from economic, social, cultural, and even psychological. People have suffered deep trauma, which is reflected through their experiences of homelessness, the act of leaving their homeland or known habitat behind and being forced to travel due to societal pressure. This paper attempts to study migration-based literature and films with a special focus on two films from Bangladesh, Chitra Nodir Pare (Quite flows the River Chitra) and Maati (Back to its Roots). The first part of the paper examines how partition affected the subcontinent and caused trauma to multiple people …

The Qualitative Report
In recent years, the globalization of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) policy has grown exponentially, driven by socio-economic, political, cultural, and educational desires and forces. Despite having a well-established elite English-medium education in Bangladesh, EMI-based, a new type of education system has emerged recently at primary and secondary levels called English-version (EV) education. This paper investigates parents' desires to choose EV schools for their children and how those desires contribute to marketizing EV schools as a new and popular commodity in the education market of Bangladesh. Data were collected using open-ended questionnaires from 120 parents of primary school …

The Urdu-Speaking Community Of Bangladesh: Forgotten Denizens Or Putative Citizens?, Naimul Muquim
Emory International Law Review
The Urdu-speaking community in Bangladesh, commonly known as the “Biharis” or “Stranded Pakistanis,” has been living in distressing circumstances. Despite the Supreme Court of Bangladesh declaring Urdu-speakers citizens of the country in 2008, there continues to be challenges related to their integration prospects. The community still faces widespread discrimination, primarily because of the Bangladeshi bureaucracy’s systemic neglect and the community’s former refugee and stateless status. This study examines to what extent Urdu-speakers are now able to enjoy full citizenship rights. It also assesses the government of Bangladesh’s existing policies and the relationship between citizenship and the law, comprising of both …
