Theses and Dissertations

Diode Pumped Alkali Lasers (DPALs) are a new type of laser that uses alkali metal vapor as a gain medium and a buffer gas to control the line shape and kinetics. While these systems were first demonstrated in 2003 [48] they have just recently been scaled to the kilowatt power levels in 2012 [18]. To achieve these powers, the design of the gain cell relied on a set of incomplete line shape and kinetic data. The current focus areas of DPAL research are the continued power scaling of the systems and basic science research into the rates involved within the …

The work shows the impact of alkali metals in the sintering process on effectiveness of the electrostatic precipitator and dust emissions into the air. The results of analysis of the content of Na and K in dust discharged from the sinter strand and emitted to the air are presented. It was found that this content is subject to large fluctuations and significantly increases in the dust phase after electrostatic precipitators. Using the balance sheet data, the effect of loads of Na2O and K2O compounds contributed to the sinter mix on emissions of dust. It was also observed high variability of …

The paper presents the impact of alkali metals on sintering and blast furnace processes and air pollutant emissions including particulate matter. On the basis of the balance calculations, it was found that the main source of alkali (Na2O and K2O) in the sintering process is a raw mixture unweathered. The calculations showed that the level of dust emissions from the sinter strand to a large extent depends on: the total alkali content in a mixture of sinter, ash content in coke breeze, K2O concentration in coke ash and alkalinity of the produced sinter. Alkali metals are introduced into the blast …

Three-Dimensional Current Distributions In A Bipolar, Chlor-Alkali Membrane Cell, Ralph E. White, F. Jagush, H. S. Burney Jan 1990

Three-Dimensional Current Distributions In A Bipolar, Chlor-Alkali Membrane Cell, Ralph E. White, F. Jagush, H. S. Burney

The current distributions in a stack of bipolar, membrane
chlor-alkali cells are important design considerations
(1). The degree of nonuniformity of the current distribution
is important to know because highly nonuniform
current distributions could cause, among other things, severe
damage to the membrane in a cell stack (2).
