Improving Compliance In Missed Visits Documentation, Ma Rosalie Felix
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Within the South Bay Hospice Agency, documentation compliance for missed visits was 68% in the first quarter of 2024, when the national standard should be 100% according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Context: Inadequate nurse documentation and communication between health professionals can lead to medical errors, poor team communication and suboptimal patient outcomes (Tasew et al., 2019). Therefore, the importance of documentation compliance is imperative. Hospice staff perform scheduled visits for terminally ill patients 1-2 times a week; however, a missed visit can occur when a patient declines it for a variety of reasons.
Interventions: The …

BACKGROUND: Individuals on the autism spectrum commonly have differences from non-autistic people in expressing their emotions using communicative behaviors, such as facial expressions. However, it is not yet clear if this reduced expressivity stems from reduced physiological reactivity in emotional contexts or if individuals react internally, but do not show these reactions externally to others. We hypothesized that autism is characterized by a discordance between in-the-moment internal psychophysiological arousal and external communicative expressions of emotion.
METHODS: Forty-one children on the autism spectrum and 39 non-autistic, typically developing (TD) children of two age groups (2-4 and 8-12 years) participated in a …

Leadership Strategies And Behaviors That Support Career Advancement For Teleworkers, Glory A. Sanders
Journal of Fundamental & Applied Business Research
Research in telework has primarily focused on the study of teleworkers or the comparison between teleworkers and non-teleworkers. For this reason, leader behavior in the telework context has been a relatively neglected area of study. This study emphasized the need for more career advancement within the telework arena, contributing to higher turnover intentions and a reluctance to participate in telework programs. This research explored explicitly leader behaviors and strategies that support career advancement for teleworkers within Denver, Colorado. The findings indicate that leaders are more intentional about communication with teleworkers than non-teleworkers. Physical distance creates many challenges, which effective and …

Exploring Hangar Flying As A Communication Practice For Vicarious Learning: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of General Aviation Storytelling On Youtube, Timothy Aaron Frizzell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
More than 50% of general aviation accidents are caused by pilot error, often due to inadequate formal training or inexperience in real-life situations (Pilot Institute, 2023). Some scholars suggest that learning from other pilots’ experiences could supplement formal training and increase general aviation safety (Cohn, 1994; Harnagel, 2021; Krog, 2022). With this in mind, this study explored the communication phenomenon known as hangar flying, an aviation storytelling practice in which pilots share flying experiences. The goal was to investigate how hangar flying may enable vicarious learning, influence personal flying culture, and, as a result, increase flight safety. Employing a qualitative …

You Never Walk Alone: Bts As A Symbol Of Light For Youth, Aaliyah Robinson
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
This essay examines how the South Korean music group, BTS, has utilized their platform to bring awareness to mental health in youth. I specifically analyze the use of their personal stories and experiences as a means of communication or outreach to their fans, also known as the ARMY. Exploring the theory of identification, or a direct sense of connectedness between a speaker and an audience, I argue that through their music and personalized rhetoric speech patterns, BTS seeks to allow their fans to view their experiences as the same. This has created a dynamic encompassing a sense of friendship and …

Speech and language needs are not being met effectively in preschool-aged children. These skills are incredibly important, as speech and language skills affect all other areas of development (Greenwood et al., 2013). To help solve this problem, professionals who work with this population of students need to have effective practices in place to address the needs of these students. This project aims to provide preschool-aged children who have speech and language needs the access to communication they deserve. Through Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, many speech and language needs can be addressed. This project will provide training on AAC …

Staff Matters: Supporting Working Parents As A Recruitment And Retention Strategy, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Supporting employees who are parents is essential. Harvard data shows 73% of employees have caregiving responsibilities, highlighting the need for proactive strategies. First, communicate with employees to understand their needs for flexibility. Consider offering flexible schedules, part-time roles, and on-call staff to manage absences. Partnering with local childcare providers for sick coverage and allowing children at work occasionally can also help. Clear communication and defined parameters for flexibility are crucial. Implementing these strategies can build a supportive culture, enhancing employee retention and commitment.

Exploring A New Conceptual Framework In Aviation Maintenance Incident Reporting Using Natural Language Processing, Christopher P. Braun
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In the analysis of human error incidents, human factors specialists predominantly follow two schools of thought in categorization strategies. One is to categorize the operator’s actions by the physical properties of the activity (phenotypes); the other focuses on the cognitive behaviors preceding the incident (genotypes). These categorization strategies are intended to foster an understanding of the events, identify risks, and assist in the implementation of risk reduction interventions. Commercial aviation maintenance presents unique challenges to human factor practitioners in terms of task requirements, working environments, communication modalities, and safety standards. Complex tasks are handed from one shift of personnel to …
