Indonesia-Germany Cooperation In Efforts To Improve Vocational Education Levels: Analysis Of The Ausbildung Program, Rafflialdi Hugo Atthareq, Rmt Nurhasan Affandi
Jurnal Pendidikan Vokasi
The quality of Indonesian human resources still needs improvement to compete in the international world. Currently, the international market requires a lot of competence in technical skills in the vocational field. For this reason, Indonesia focuses on developing vocational training and education. This demand was not fulfilled because Indonesian vocational graduates did not have the right skills. With abundant but ineffective resources, Indonesia must learn much from other countries, including Germany. The output of this international collaboration is the Ausbildung program or Apprenticeship Training. This article seeks to reveal how Indonesian-Germany cooperation in vocational education impacts the two countries by …
"Innumerable Small Crafts": Maritime Work In The Estuarian Gulf, 1865-1900, Kevin Grubbs
"Innumerable Small Crafts": Maritime Work In The Estuarian Gulf, 1865-1900, Kevin Grubbs
Dissertations
Maritime historians have argued for a highpoint in maritime activity during the antebellum years. This peak was fed by Americans travelling on tall wooden sailing ships in international trade, in the whaling industries, and as members of the US Navy. The prowess of the American Merchant Marine faded quickly in the middle of the nineteenth century due to military losses during the American Civil War and due to the rise of steamships and steel hulls. This peak was followed by another lesser peak in the Twentieth Century as American ships caught up with technological changes. World War One provided a …
The Challenges Of Minoritized Contingent Faculty In Higher Education, Edna Chun, Alvin Evans
The Challenges Of Minoritized Contingent Faculty In Higher Education, Edna Chun, Alvin Evans
Navigating Careers in Higher Education Series
The Challenges of Minoritized Contingent Faculty in Higher Education offers a probing and unvarnished look at the employment challenges of these faculty members in four-year institutions. With dramatic shifts in the faculty workforce and nearly three-quarters of instructional positions in United States institutions now off the tenure track, contingent faculty have become the essential, frontline workers of higher education. Remarkably little research attention has focused on the experiences of minoritized contingent faculty in this new academic underclass. Based on in-depth interviews coupled with extensive research, the book highlights the double marginalization that can occur due to secondary employment status in …
Welfare In Crisis: Labor And Social Protection In The Global South, Jake Lin, Dennis Arnold, Minh T. N. Nguyen
Welfare In Crisis: Labor And Social Protection In The Global South, Jake Lin, Dennis Arnold, Minh T. N. Nguyen
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Welfare expansion in the global South is partly in response to the social crises caused by neoliberal restructuring since the 1980s, with the 2008 global financial crisis escalating them, and the covid-19 pandemic further exposing the impact on the most precarious working populations. What are the new dynamics of labor struggles against these structural, industrial, and health crises under the expansion of social protection or the lack thereof? How do the state and non-state actors manage recurring and new capitalist crises by reconfiguring labor and social policies? The contributions in this special issue address these questions by engaging with workers’ …
Making Oer Sustainable In The Library: Building Community Through Professional Development For Librarians, Joanna Thompson, Joshua Peach
Making Oer Sustainable In The Library: Building Community Through Professional Development For Librarians, Joanna Thompson, Joshua Peach
Publications and Research
While open educational resources (OER) programs are often situated in university and college libraries, librarians come to the practice with different levels of exposure and knowledge. At the New York City College of Technology (City Tech) library, we attempted to bridge this gap by offering a paid training for all full-time librarians at the college. Our goal for the training was to integrate the philosophy of open educational resources and its approaches into librarians’ everyday work. This article outlines the rationale for our approach to professional development, the program design, participant feedback, and future directions.

Religion And Growth, Sascha O. Becker, Jared Rubin, Ludger Woessmann
Religion And Growth, Sascha O. Becker, Jared Rubin, Ludger Woessmann
ESI Working Papers
We use the elements of a macroeconomic production function—physical capital, human capital, labor, and technology—together with standard growth models to frame the role of religion in economic growth. Unifying a growing literature, we argue that religion can enhance or impinge upon economic growth through all four elements because it shapes individual preferences, societal norms, and institutions. Religion affects physical capital accumulation by influencing thrift and financial development. It affects human capital through both religious and secular education. It affects population and labor by influencing work effort, fertility, and the demographic transition. And it affects total factor productivity by constraining or …
Indigent Defense In Louisville: Conditions For Unionization, Zane R. Phelps
Indigent Defense In Louisville: Conditions For Unionization, Zane R. Phelps
The Cardinal Edge
This paper begins by examining the unionization efforts of the Louisville Metro Public Defender Corporation and seeks to link those conditions with national trends to cultivate a rich understanding of why the attorneys are unionizing and what policy solutions they hope to achieve. After surveying the sources of funding and oversight for indigent defense across varying state systems, it synthesizes a policy recommendation wherein federal intervention (National Labor Relations Board), state and local government budgetary oversight and appropriations powers (Kentucky General Assembly, Louisville Metro Council), and the collective bargaining and unionization process (concerted activity), protected by law, are utilized in …
Representaciones Ideológicas Del Lenguaje Entre La Población Mexicana En Nueva York, Maria Del Rocio Carranza Brito
Representaciones Ideológicas Del Lenguaje Entre La Población Mexicana En Nueva York, Maria Del Rocio Carranza Brito
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the linguistic ideologies that Mexican migrants bring when migrating and reproduce in their daily interactions with other Spanish and English speakers, as well as the representations of the language presented in their linguistic behaviors. This work presents an intersectional analysis where the factors of gender, migratory status, education, and work are determining factors in the adoption, maintenance, and reproduction of language ideologies, which affect the linguistic decisions of the speakers in their use of Spanish, learning of English and the support of bilingualism. Based on the stereotypical idea of Spanish as the …

The State Of The Unions 2023: A Profile Of Organized Labor In New York City, New York State, And The United States, Ruth Milkman, Joseph Van Der Naald
Publications and Research
This report released by the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, State of the Unions 2023: A Profile of Organized Labor in New York City, New York State, and the United States, is a part of an annual publication series, documents recent trends in unionization patterns. The overall level of unionization in both the City and State has been roughly double the national rate over the past two decades. But recently, union density has fallen more in New York City and New York State than in the United States as a whole. In the mid-2010s, both the City and …

Factors Associated With Postpartum Care During The Fourth Stage Of Labor In Nepal: A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study, Ashok Kumar Paudel, Muni Raj Chhetri, Ambika Baniya, Mamta Chhetri, Aafrin Gurung
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Postnatal care is an important part of maternal and neonatal care, and life-threatening complications can occur during the postpartum period. Empirical information on the level of postpartum care services is generally scarce in Nepal. Key elements of postpartum care during the fourth stage of labor include providing proper nutrition, promoting breastfeeding, and helping the mother manage any physical discomforts or challenges that may arise. This study investigated the level of postpartum care services delivered during the fourth stage of labor in a tertiary-level hospital in the Chitwan district of Nepal. A descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted among 148 women …
Exploring Sustainability In Library Support For Open Pedagogy Collaborations, Kate Mcnally Carter, Ariana Santiago
Exploring Sustainability In Library Support For Open Pedagogy Collaborations, Kate Mcnally Carter, Ariana Santiago
Communications in Information Literacy
The literature in open education has thoroughly examined the implications of labor and staffing for initiatives around open educational resources (OER). However, less attention has been paid to the reliance on librarian labor for open pedagogy support. This article describes a collaboration between librarians and faculty to support an open pedagogy assignment in which students co-created an open textbook describing the history, politics, and culture of several East Asian cities. Special attention is paid to the scope and level of the support from the Libraries, which included faculty consultations, several instruction sessions, managing the publishing platform, and developing processes to …
The Design Of Consequences, Yuqi Tang
The Design Of Consequences, Yuqi Tang
Masters Theses
Young professionals entering the architecture industry face an imminent and abrupt realization of the disparity between their academic training and the reality of what a career in practice entails.
The architectural industry has long been susceptible to criticism for unpaid internships and overtime. The issue stems from an ambiguity of architectural practice as neither a service or an outcome product, isolating the perception of our work from constructors, lawyers, doctors and even artists, and making it difficult for design labor to be commodified, or for the value of design labor to be asserted, consolidated and fiscalized1. This thesis aims to …
Critique! Critique! Critique! Black Labor In The Early American Book Trade, John J. Garcia
Critique! Critique! Critique! Black Labor In The Early American Book Trade, John J. Garcia
Criticism
This article pursues two lines of inquiry: first, recovering the presence of Black labor in the history of the book in colonial North America, the British Caribbean, and the early United States, with a second and complementary discussion of why critique must be foregrounded in the field formation of critical bibliography. Free and enslaved Black men and women helped make early American books possible. Their presences are to be found at the edges and vicinities of print cultural production, in roles such as papermaking, wagon driving, and forms of domestic labor that extended to the libraries and reading practices of …
Confronting And Caring For Spaces Of Service, Tia Miller
Confronting And Caring For Spaces Of Service, Tia Miller
Masters Theses
Hotel service spaces have existed as a typology of willful erasure and strategic manipulation for centuries. As criticism around unfair labor practices continues to grow in the post-pandemic world, how can we better confront the hidden necessity of service space while also caring for workers who maintain the buildings we design? Leveraging the common comparison of hotel front of house and back of house spaces to a theater’s main stage and backstage, what can be learned when the spaces are reconstructed as open and observable sets? What choreographies exist in these spaces and how do they change when the back …

Black And Blue Police Arbitration Reforms, Michael Z. Green

The racial justice protests that engulfed the country after seeing a video of the appalling killing of a Black male, George Floyd, by a Minnesota police officer in 2020 has led to a tremendous number of questions about dealing with racial issues in policing. Similar concerns arose a little more than fifty years ago when police unions gained power to respond to the civil rights protests occurring during those times by establishing strong protections for their officers in light of brutality claims. This rhythmic progression of protests and union responses is destined to continue without any lasting reforms focused on …

Educating Nursing Staff On Evidence-Based Maternal Positioning To Promote Fetal Descent During The First And Second Stages Of Labor, Daniela Gonzalez Acosta
Educating Nursing Staff On Evidence-Based Maternal Positioning To Promote Fetal Descent During The First And Second Stages Of Labor, Daniela Gonzalez Acosta
Master's Projects and Capstones
This project aims to educate labor and delivery nurses on evidence-based maternal labor positions that promote fetal descent in the first and second stages of labor. In a labor and delivery unit in the San Francisco Bay Area Silicon Valley region, there is a gap in nurse knowledge relating to labor positions. Evidence supports upright and flexible sacrum positions, along with frequent repositioning promotes shorter labor duration, decreased vaginal tearing, and decreased rate of cesarean section deliveries.
A quality improvement project was conducted through education implementation using evidence-based practices utilizing a PDSA cycle for a semester. Educational content was created …
Educating Labor And Delivery Nurses On Evidence-Based Birthing Positions To Promote Fetal Descent During First And Second Stage Labor, Sophia Nguyen
Educating Labor And Delivery Nurses On Evidence-Based Birthing Positions To Promote Fetal Descent During First And Second Stage Labor, Sophia Nguyen
Master's Projects and Capstones
The goal of this project was to increase confidence of labor and delivery nurses in utilizing evidence-supported birth positions during the first and second stages of labor in order to aid in fetal descent and labor progression. Current statistics demonstrate climbing trends in cesarean deliveries, which have been associated with increased maternal morbidity and mortality. One nurse intervention that can reduce failure to progress, a main contributor to cesarean sections, is the use of various evidence-supported maternal birth positions such as ambulation, assisted squat, sitting, backwards sitting, lunging, throne, side-lying with peanut ball, hands-and-knees, and throne position. This evidence-based practice …
To Dig A Hole And Fill It Back Up, Jackson Whetstone
To Dig A Hole And Fill It Back Up, Jackson Whetstone
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
Abstract:
The socioeconomical philosophy of the United States is still very much related to the Marxist Labor Theory of Value which states that “the economic value of a good or service is determined by the amount of socially necessary labor required to produce it” (Das Kapital, Marx 1.) This philosophy has penetrated the way that we think about art and object, and in turn positions art as a means of transaction, thus limiting art to a form of glorified currency. This Essay will chronicle my art practice, that have led up to two thesis pieces, Trench and Dig …

Shapeshifter, Kate Kosek
Shapeshifter, Kate Kosek
Art and Design Theses
Where is the line between art and craft? “You can be anything you want to be,” they say, “You can have it all!” Shapeshifter is a playful manipulation of form and language pertaining to my perspective as a woman who creates textile sculptures that question the gendered hierarchies within art and craft. Humor and intuition allow me to reclaim power through cute, colorful, and decorative artworks that satirize the dominant narratives surrounding women’s work and leisure. Shapeshifter plays with the stereotypes of gender, labor, and aesthetics within art history to imagine a world where objects like pyramids and scrunchies are …
