After Being Ignored, Autistic Adults Find Their Place On The Spectrum, Leonardo A. Lopez Carreno
After Being Ignored, Autistic Adults Find Their Place On The Spectrum, Leonardo A. Lopez Carreno
Capstones
Autistic adults have been historically ignored by researchers and clinical psychologists when discussing autism spectrum disorder. But the broadening of the diagnosis requirements for the disorder, as well as the perspectives from autistic adults that have been shared on social media, have made it so that autistic adults are being discussed more now than ever before, both in the autism community and among professionals in the field. This project puts together interviews with autistic people who have found communities online and in person, as well as the perspectives of researchers who have published studies about autism.

The Use Of Single-Subject Research Design For Assessment, Evaluation, And Research In Higher Education, Jordan C. Spencer
Theses and Dissertations
While enrolling in a college for a degree is still considered to be more of the expectation than the rule in households across the United States it is facing public criticism regarding its overall cost versus long-term benefits. This has prompted researchers to reevaluate practices in higher education to determine ways in which post-secondary institutions can improve their overall outcomes. In part, research indicates that this should include revisions to assessment, evaluation, and research (AER) practices. Currently, higher education faces many challenges associated with rigorous AER practices, which include an institutional focus on accountability measures, organizational challenges, and difficulties in …

Understanding Contemporary Postsecondary Parental Academic Involvement: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Research Inquiry, Dennis Allen Smith
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenology was to describe the experiences of college students who encounter negative parental academic involvement. The central question was, what are first- and second-year college students’ experiences with negative parental academic involvement? The theory guiding this study was the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler (1995) parental involvement theory designed to analyze parents’ participation in a child’s education. The background includes the historical, social, and theoretical foundations warranting this study and the researcher’s motivations and philosophical assumptions. The participants were 14 first- and second-year students attending a community college, a public university, and a private university. Data collection …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 24. Wallace At 200: Potential Subjects For Student Theses, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
The bicentennial of Alfred Russel Wallace’s birth in 2023 will likely produce a wide array of reviews of his life and work; here, we pause for a short look at some Wallace-related questions that might be adapted for student theses and dissertations. Some of the subjects treated fall in with established lines of research, while others are suggested by other Wallace interests or activities that have not been much explored.
Total Physical Response Storytelling With Undergraduate Foreign Language Learners: Exploring Vocabulary Growth, Eva M. Jones
Total Physical Response Storytelling With Undergraduate Foreign Language Learners: Exploring Vocabulary Growth, Eva M. Jones
Masters Theses
This thesis analyzes the effectiveness of two pedagogical techniques used in foreign language teaching on vocabulary growth in a university setting: Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS) and a more traditional approach that does not involve storytelling. Over two sessions taking place a week apart, participants were separated into either the Control group or the Experimental group. Each group learned the same list of vocabulary words in the treatment session. While the Control group learned the target vocabulary through a traditional method, the Experimental group learned the vocabulary through a story. In the introduction, TPRS’s origins are reviewed as well as …

Public Opinion On Illegal Immigration In The United States: Understanding The Xenophobic Sentiments Towards Illegal Immigrants, Alexandra Martinez
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Over the past 10 years, the topic of illegal immigration has divided Americans with the past three presidencies. This paper investigates the relationship between party ID,media exposure, education and religion with the views a person has on illegal immigration. Using the Chapman Survey of American Fears, I found a moderately strong relationship between an individual's party-identification and how much fear
they show towards the topic of illegal immigration throughout the United States. I found that media exposure and a person’s political identification correlates with their views on illegal immigration. Among the interesting findings, I can conclude that individuals with more …

On Grammaticality Judgement Tasks In Second Language Acquisition Reasearch, Brahim Simour
Dirassat
The purpose of the present article is to consider some important metho- dological problems having to do with the techniques of elicitation of inter- language (henceforth IL) data. Researchers in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) generally make use of two main sorts of data: intuitional data and tex- tual data. The former broadly refer to learner's metalinguistic judgments and represent the dominating trend in the eighties, whereas the latter consist pri- marily of learner productions and were dominating in the seventies. Here, we will be particularly interested in the elicitation of intuitional data because of two fundamental reasons : the first …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
For the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) to achieve its full impact, it is necessary for health practitioners to be trained and reliably funded to deliver research and translation alongside their clinical work. We offer insight into current systems, concerns and suggestions as this applies to clinical research in nursing and midwifery. Nurses and midwives globally have a long record of delivering high quality clinical research that improves care and outcomes. An analysis of four landmark nursing-led studies in the United States illustrates the value-adding potential of such research: for every grant dollar, the return on investment ranged from $202 …

How To Know You Are Ready To Submit Your Work To Academic Journals: A Guide For Graduate Students And Faculty, Mary Garofalo
General Research
As a graduate student or tenure-track faculty, research (the amount that you produce and publish) is core to your position, current and future. Whether in a doctoral program or trying to earn tenure, submitting your research to journals is a daunting task, only second to designing, implementing, analyzing, and writing up your research. On your journey towards dissertation defense or working with mentors and/or peers to complete a research project, you are often required to have many eyes on your design, methods, analysis, and results, but also, the format of your written product. During dissertation writing, the chair of your …

Promoting Open Access Journals And Open Data To Your Scholarly Community For Maximum Impact, Barbara M. Pope
Faculty Submissions
Open access journals and open data provide researchers with information that would otherwise be behind a paywall. Both are growing exponentially and are widely used and cited by scholars. However, not all open access journals are respected, peer reviewed publications and should be evaluated prior to submitting research. Open data repositories allow researchers to deposit their data to promote it and make it available for others to access and use. Getting the word out about scholarly research is fundamental to other researchers to access it, and augments the possibility of citations and altmetrics scores. Come to this presentation to hear …

ROSA Research Briefs
The past year has been one marked by transition – as a country we have moved from treating COVID-19 as a pandemic to living with it as an endemic disease. Research conducted by the Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA) has taken a similar trajectory, expanding the scope of investigations from COVID-19 topics to other areas that are important for the general well-being of older adults in Singapore. This report showcases ROSA’s research involving older Singaporeans and the partnerships that have been forged in the past year. These developments will be presented in two sections. Using Artificial Intelligence In The Law Review Submissions Process, Brenda M. Simon
Faculty Scholarship
The use of artificial intelligence to help editors examine law review submissions may provide a way to improve an overburdened system. This Article is the first to explore the promise and pitfalls of using artificial intelligence in the law review submissions process. Technology-assisted review of submissions offers many possible benefits. It can simplify preemption checks, prevent plagiarism, detect failure to comply with formatting requirements, and identify missing citations. These efficiencies may allow editors to address serious flaws in the current selection process, including the use of heuristics that may result in discriminatory outcomes and dependence on lower-ranked journals to conduct …
