Blocking Out The Sun: Restricting Rooftop Solar In Atlanta, Georgia, Carys Behnke
Geosciences Theses
This study examines the uneven geographies of residential rooftop solar energy adoption across the City of Atlanta. Rooftop solar has the potential to reduce the racial wealth gap, advance economic independence for low-income households, and decrease utility bills. However, research in cities nationwide has consistently shown a marked discrepancy in rooftop solar adoption between white and minority neighborhoods. In Atlanta, analysis of solar permit applications and demographic data shows that 64% of solar installation permits are in majority-white census tracts, though the majority of permits have been located in majority-Black neighborhoods over the last two years. While rapidly increasing adoption …

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment
Achieving our global goals of universal access to clean energy and averting a climate crisis will require a mass scale-up of investments in renewable energy infrastructure, redirecting capital from carbon intensive energy and transport systems. The International Renewable Energy Agency estimates that the transformation of the energy system alone will need cumulative investments to reach USD 110 trillion by 2050 to keep the rise in global temperatures to well below 2°C and towards 1.5°C during this century. Of that amount, over 80% will need to be invested in renewables, energy efficiency, end-use electrification, and power grids and flexibility.

Fossil fuels are the primary source of energy for a long period in spite of excessive environmental hazards, such as greenhouse gas emissions. Production of energy and fuel from lignocellulosic biomass has been the goal of the study in pursuit of renewable alternatives to fossil materials. Corncob is common agricultural biomass waste found in many countries. It can be utilized to produce bioenergy, but the conversion efficiency is limited. Pretreatment may be applied to improve the efficiency of corncob conversion; for example, by the fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass. Choline chloride (ChCl) and glycerol are considered as synthetic deep eutectic solvents …

Wind power is an expanding source of renewable energy. However, there are ecological challenges related to wind energy generation, including collisions of wildlife with turbines. Lack of rigor, and variation in study design, together limit efforts to understand the broad-scale effects of wind power infrastructure on wildlife populations. It is not clear, however, whether these types of limitations apply to groups of birds such as raptors that are particularly vulnerable to negative effects of wind energy. We reviewed 672 peer-reviewed publications, unpublished reports, and citations from 321 wind facilities in 12 countries to evaluate methods used to monitor and mitigate …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The rise in demand for underwater wireless communication networks (UWCN) has been driven by the emergence of new applications including unmanned underwater vehicles, deep-sea exploration, maritime and underwater archaeology research, and diver communications. For various applications, underwater network lifetime must be long, since unlike terrestrial sensor networks, it is a major job to change/recharge node batteries in underwater environments. In this paper, we introduce a solution where critical nodes in a UWCN are periodically recharged by small renewable energy sources. Further, a caching mechanism is introduced to relieve critical nodes of heavy workload when their residual energies run low. By …

Energy poverty, defined as a lack of access to reliable electricity and reliance on traditional biomass resources for cooking, affects over a billion people daily. The World Health Organization estimates that household air pollution from inefficient stoves causes more premature deaths than malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Increasing demand for energy has led to dramatic increases in emissions. The need for reliable electricity and limiting emissions drives research on Resilient Hybrid Energy Systems (RHESs), which provide cleaner energy through combining wind, solar, and biomass energy with traditional fossil energy, increasing production efficiency and reliability and reducing generating costs and emissions. Microgrids …

Z-Source-Based High Step-Up Dc-Dc Converters For Photovoltaic Applications, Ramin Rahimi, Saeed Habibi, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Pourya Shamsi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This article proposes three high step-up Z-source (ZS)-based dc-dc converters by integrating the conventional ZS network with switched-capacitor (SC) cells. The proposed converters offer a simple structure with a smooth input current, a high-voltage gain, and low voltage stress on the semiconductor devices. In addition, the proposed converters, unlike some existing ZS-based topologies in the literature, do not impose any limitation on the duty cycle of the power switch. These characteristics make the proposed converters excellent candidates to interface a low-voltage solar photovoltaic (PV) panel with a high-voltage dc bus in PV applications. Among the proposed three converters, the operating …

Modern power systems characterized by complex topologies require accurate situational awareness to maintain an adequate level of reliability. Since they are large and spread over wide geographical areas, it is inevitable that failures will occur. Various generation and transmission disturbances, such as generator and transmission line tripping and load disconnection, give rise to a mismatch between generation and demand, which manifest as frequency events. These events can take the form of negligible frequency deviations or more severe emergencies that can precipitate cascading outages, depending on the severity of the disturbance and efficacy of remedial action schema. The impacts of such …
Offshore Speculation: Generative Ethics For Submerged Lands, Leigh Miller
Offshore Speculation: Generative Ethics For Submerged Lands, Leigh Miller
Masters Theses
Where is the line between land and sea? As the United States begins to extend renewable energy infrastructures offshore, it will fundamentally blur the boundary between submerged and visible lands. In communities unfamiliar with landscapes of extraction and generation, the realities of this emerging industry will challenge notions of ownership, aesthetic values, and environmental ethics.
Offshore Speculation opens a dialogue between the discipline of landscape architecture and the spatial politics that support the nation’s transition away from fossil fuels. Reimagining the sea as a new urban territory on submerged land allows honest interrogation of the land-sea binary. Because landscape architects …

Channeling Influence On Noise And Aerodynamic Performance Of Naca 0012 Airfoil As A Possible Solution Of Wind Turbines Noise, Hussein Khudhayer Mohammad
Dissertations
This work numerically and experimentally investigates the effect of using channels inside airfoils on the noise level as a possible resolution for aerodynamic noise generated by wind turbines. The work also investigates aerodynamic performance and turbulence around the employed airfoils. The results reveal that some of the samples show some improvement in reducing the aerodynamic noise. The reduction of the aerodynamic noise is explained as the trailing edge blowing injection that reduces the wake momentum deficit of the blade and reduces the pressure fluctuation which is responsible for noise production. Particularly, the angles of channel inclination with respect to the …
